Pinching the application between two fingers he picked up the application and let it drift down into the trash bin. "Yes, you will. Do send in the next applicant."

Ami quietly filed in after Lucky, movements mechanical, but with purpose. The nervousness that affiliated with every interview was with her, but it had nothing to do with H or hunterdom in general. Why would she be afraid of H pinpointing her faults? He knew them already, she knew them already. In fact this whole interview process seemed a little silly to her considering the circumstances. Why interview them when he most likely already had intel on them? Formalities, maybe.

It was pitiable then, that she treated the interview with so much care. "Sir." She greeted him with a pinch of reverence as her feet carried her closer to the desk he was usually found in. At least she didn't have to go through the awkwardness of introductions. Hands folded in front of her, in the lotus position as she watched him carefully.

The room hadn't changed since the last time she'd been in here- though she appreciated the alleviation that she wasn't begging for her life this time. The doctor, however, had changed from the last time she'd seen him in that strange, alternate world hotel. Hawaiian shirts and fretful devotion to an imaginary wife hadn't suited the doctor at all. It was good to see him back to his usual calculated self. Though interviewing with the zen doctor probably would have been easier.

The doctor smiled, "Ami, do sit. And tell me," he drawled, slipping her application out of the pile, "...how is your work with the library going?"

Ami took the invitation to sit, folding her legs carefully and precisely. "Efficiently," she said with the flick of her hand. She thought to Stormy and Lex, both of whom she had working overtime to make any sort of leeway.

Eyes went to the application. Really the words on the paper were meaningless- she had full faith that the doctor had psychic abilities to discern everything about a person without batting an eyelash.

"Admittedly we've been slowed to a crawl thanks to the recent ah- events." Was there a way to politely say "everybody's dying and creatures attacking us left and right"? At least she'd managed to save the codex. "Nothing we can't recover from. We always do, don't we?"

Leaning back in his chair he regarded her for several quiet moments and then sighed, "I would think that, considering recent events, the library would much more active than usual given the need for more traditional research. I suppose I was a bit overconfident in its staff, and possibly underestimated their reliance on digital archives as well. It'll be remedied."

Setting the paper aside, he continued, "You can go ahead and send the next person in."

Ami raised an eyebrow, contemplating whether or not H's overconfidence was a compliment or an insult, but didn't say anything. He was granting her more staff and assistance- why would she complain about that?

"Yes thank you sir- and thank you for your time." A short interview. She appreciated that. Last time she'd been in here, H hadn't failed to remind her not to waste his time, so she spared no expenditure on her way out. Ami called the next person in, and was on her way.

Melvin Wood did not like H. The only time he had ever went to his office was before he knew H pretty much didn't give a s**t. The only real use he saw H for was to approve project funding. If it wasn't to attempt to get a promotion to being a Aide, he wouldn't have even bothered, but he honestly hated how things were run around here, and he couldn't well say he wanted to improve them if he didn't proactively seek out opportunities to be in that position.

"Hello, Mr. H." He really wished he knew this guys actual name. Giving him a later just seemed like a guy's douchey way to be cool. Who did he think he was? Some sort of Hollywood spy?

Stepping in, he made his way to the chair and sat down, making sure to keep his back straight and not to leanway back (you never knew how many people sat in a chair like this who didn't bathe regularly). It would be redundant to say he was here for the position or wanted it. That was the only reason any of them were here - well, aside from one other things he wanted to know.

"Mr. Wood," the doctor drawled in response. "And why do you think I would hire you on as my secretarial assistant?"

H's tone was less than pleasing, and was added to the things that grated against his nerves.

"Because there are a whole lot of problems here and too many people are content with how things are or don't want to go against the current to actually get off their lazy assess to do it. If it doesn't affect them directly, they don't care. If it's too big of a job, they don't want to waste the energy. If it might cost them something, - well they don't want to see it coming out of their pocket. Life included. I'm not here to play as a coffee fetcher. I already did that enough when I was starting out in the labs. I'm not here to be a yes-man either. I don't think there are many things here that are done I can even agree with.." And he doubted H would say most of those things.

"I know how to lead my own projects. I'm not lazy, but there are a million other problems around here that aren't being handled. Life should be working with Moon a lot more. Not to mention that there are a bunch of hunters here who think it's A-OK to go fighting each other off the fields, wasting Infirmary time by sending their casualties there, and everyone excuses their insanity as hunters being hunters. The role of counselor hasn't been filled in months and no one sees that as a problem. Then again, when our own superiors going off their rocker and doing the same thing, why would they?" He was less than pleased with how little was done and how often things went haywire on the island. Usually it all came down to luck, and as a man of science, he knew ratios and odds enough to know that was not the way to go.

He crossed his arms. "I'm here because I want to do something, and I don't want people using the excuse that I never actively tried to change things by not applying."

To H's credit, he refrained from rolling his eyes for the duration of Melvin's little rant. Leaning back the doctor smiled, "But why would I," he stressed the word, "hire you as my Secretarial Assistant. Which is not, may I clarify, the same as Division Assistant. For this division, such a job mainly involves paperwork, organizing, and yes, playing coffee fetcher."

The smile grew pitying, "Melvin, if you're seeking to change how this division and the other divisions are run, it won't be achieved by just getting a higher paying desk job. You don't know the first part of gaining power and holding it. You don't understand how to move and use people, and until you do, you'll always be the indignant little annoyance at the door with its hand out."

The doctor wrote a few small notes on the application, "Let the next person know they may come in."

Melvin rose up, turned, and went to the door - to shut it.

He then turned back around. "Your idea of running things is ******** up. Each and every one of you. I have seen plenty of people in YOUR position throwing entire groups of people without warning or briefing to their deaths, because someone had a hissy fit or wanted to make examples of them. Then everyone else has to rush in to save them in time. I honestly would like to know what you think holding power even means, because you really seem to want to be playing teacher right now with me. I'm not here for you to insult. Just because I don't have your job, doesn't mean I put up with s**t."

He stood there, and waited. "I didn't expect to get this job. I came as a formality. Typically, getting the desk jobs leads to other positions. Opens doors. Color me naive for applying the logic of the real world to this administration."

"Why are you even in Life? Suggesting I use people doesn't exactly reflect someone who is looking out for the well-being of his fellow hunter, or are people outside of this division free game?" So far, H seemed more of the problem than a part of the solution.

Laughter, rich and pleased, filled the air. "It's nice to see you've retained the naivete you had the first time you entered this office. I can't say anything for Caelius, he and I work very differently. He prefers to break things...and people, until only the strongest remain. I abhor waste and choose to hold onto even the weakest hunters, finding a function for them that benefits the division and myself. That you haven't seen fit to observe and breakdown the typical methods of the various leaders and how they differ simply proves how unprepared you are to navigate the political waters of power on the island."

The doctor sighed as he continued, "And they are political waters. Much like anywhere you find people with power and varying purposes, you need to understand how to maneuver and use people if you wish to see things take on the shape you prefer." Pulling out a different application, he continued, "I'm the head of this division because I positioned myself and events to gain total control over it. Because I wanted its tools and resources to pursue my own goals in studying and advancing our usage of FEAR."

He glanced up with a wistful smile, "Would you like to transfer out? You're rather useful when you aren't in a snit over your clumsy ideals of how things should be run."

"It's not exactly my fault. We rarely get to see our superiors to really build a profile. Unless you count creating portals in a cafeteria, sitting hush-hush in a make-shift court room, or giving unsound advice behind a desk as enough material to judge a person in all their many complexities enough?" Personally, he just felt insulted for being called naive. He wasn't like the bright-eyed girls and boys who could barely fill out their uniform, and just wanted to get along and make cupcakes.

At the offer, he did not smile back, more or less gritting his teeth. "Useful, huh?" Any other day, he would have been glad to hear that. Instead, it came with the question Useful to the division, or useful to your goals? It irritated him that being a hard worker somehow made him be seen as both a naive child with open hands and yet also a tool to be moved about and used - and only if H even saw him as useful enough to bother with.

"That won't be needed. As much as a delight you are to deal with, I'm not giving up my lab space for someone else." There was no point in asking anything else of H. Not about what his goals actually were, or about the recent mission and the artifact in turn. If H thought he was only at his office to hold out his hands and receive, it would be stupid to continue showing him that - not that he had to prove anything to him. Why try to gain the respect or good favor of a person who ultimately saw you as a resource or piece to their own goals?

Grabbing the door, he threw it open and left. He hoped whoever got the job of coffee fetcher took advantage of that position and spit in the good doctor's drinks at every chance.

Jack had sat quietly, happy to wait his turn. He couldn't hear anything from the other interviews, sadly, though the last fellow to leave was in such a mood that he had to wonder what laid ahead for him; he hadn't so much heard words as he had brisk tones. Ah well~ He'd roll with the punches as he always did--sometimes literally.

Casually as could be, the giant of a hunter ducked into the room and settled in the open chair, sitting back and getting comfortable for what apparently would be (according to the others) a relatively short exchange. "Jack Hawthorn, sir. Nice to hear it isn't all quiet bookish types here."

The fact that he knew next to nothing about the doctor was either a blessing of ignorance or a horrible mistake waiting to happen.

"Yes, " the doctor murmured pleasantly, "though do be careful of those who do happen to fit the stereotype. They've run a bit feral recently." Shuffling the papers he came to Jack's, and began writing small notes in the margin.

"Now, tell me Mr. Hawthorn, what do you see yourself doing as my secretarial assistant?"
