Gale obediently ambled back inside of the office, standing beside Otto with a slightly tense expression, as though he half expected Caelius to come at them with his scythe or Mark to be tossed out a window or something.

"Congratulations," began the Death lead sarcastically, which was also a great way to start any conversation with him, "You have been promoted to do slightly less menial tasks. I will have both Mark and Sam write a list of your secondary duties along with my expectations. A budget and vacation raise will be considered if you follow each of them as expected along with this semi-promotion."

He placed two of the same sheet of paper on the table. "I have carefully outlined a schedule of activities for you to complete daily along with whatever specializations you may have. If you cannot fulfill them we will find a suitable replacement for you and your specialization, permanently. You are dismissed."

If Otto and Gale actually read the paper, it would say as follows:

Daily schedule for Division aids: Death

5:30 am: Prepare 1 cup of Sumatra Dark Roast and one toasted bagel.
6:00 am: Make sure training fields are clear of debris
6:30 am: Complete assigned mission reports
7:00 am: Clear out garbage in the Death division lounges
7:30 am: Remind respective personnel of overdue mission reports
8:00 am: Vacuum the hallways between rooms 201B and 201F
8:30 am: Wipe down the glass corridors for the interrogation rooms.
9:00 am: Mop down-

- This went on and on until roughly ten pm. Wait a second - wasn't this more like, maid duty?

Wow. Responsibility. Being paid to be important, do extra work, respectable. s**t that Otto never really wanted, but did only to survive. After all, the moment he became useless, he'd be dead.

Otto looked down at the paper, his brows furrowing deeper with each hour documented.

. . .

So... he was a Deus maid AND he had to continue his specialization too?

Otto was a dead man. He didn't even clean his own room! (Molly did). At least some of the stuff entailed Death related work like mission reports but...

Otto slowly left the room, waiting until he was out of ear shot of Caelius before turning to Gale.

Gale just stared blankly because nope nope nope wait nope.

Then he reached out and grabbed the back of Otto's shirt and dragged him back, hissing in his ear, "Oh, no you don't, don't leave me to deal with this."

Otto garbled a curse as he was dragged back by his shirt, giving Gale an irritated look of defeat. "Fine fine, whatever." He huffed, freeing himself to face him. "So, what? We divvy it up?"
