"I can't. This isn't real," she cried. Maybe it was seeing Dire that sent her over the edge, but the need to resist only became stronger. She saw what was happening to Blythe. She remembered what he looked like before: strong, handsome, lively. She couldn't believe that being Chosen would be a good thing for her. She just couldn't come to accept it. The thoughts were spinning in her head, louder than ever, haunting her. "I just can't," she screamed again, throwing open the door and slamming it behind her. The bottom of her dress got caught. She tugged at it desperately, ripping it.
Charlotte jumped onto her horse clumsily and galloped home. She shut herself away in the library, huddled in the corner. Mother would be in her quarters for a few more hours. She could breathe here for now. She could be by herself. But it hardly gave her peace.

Blythe had not been prepared for her reaction, and neither had Dire. The deer spooked, bolting from the rug to hide behind her chosen, eyes watching the door with great anticipation. He lay a hand gently against her back. For a moment both stood quietly, as if waiting to see if the young woman would come back inside.
When she didn't, Dire finally resumed her normal activities, letting out a soft bleat that said 'I'm hungry now.'.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm coming." he muttered, waving his hand at the deer. As he disappeared into the kitchen to find something for her to munch on aside from his furniture, he only hoped Charlotte might come to her senses soon... for her sake.
