Maeza couldn't speak. Words had abandoned her to awful silence. Try she might, she could not answer Tom, much as she wanted to. She wanted to tell him that she did care about him, how could she not? She wanted to tell him everything she felt, but she just couldn't. As she watched Tom's reactions to her silence, she wished more and more that she had something to say. It wasn't until Tom was gone and upstairs that she choked out a soft, "Tom." But it was too late. Maeza let out a shaky breath. She had to get ready. She took a few deep breaths to calm down and walked back into her dorm to get changed, her face a mask of neutrality. When she made it, she immediately changed into her dress for the banquet. After she was changed and had her makeup and hair done, she walked out, wondering how the banquet would go with everything that had happened
