Thankfully Shiloh didn't need to make the choice as Sam abruptly pulled him - more like yanked him out of the car, taking the medallion with her. Her smile was very, very thin. "Thanks for the gift, I'm sure Shiloh here will take care of things."

She was totally throwing him under the bus in her stead.

"That is good news to hear. We do hope you'll make our meeting next month." The figure nodded to the two one more time before the door closed and the rather luxurious car drove away. It was just the two of them in the rain. Sam said nothing.

They were thankfully however, not that far away from the portal. She stepped in first, and at the other side began to wring her ponytail and bangs, stopping only to pull out a wet handkerchief and fix her makeup, out of all things, with absolute distaste. On the other end, Mark, who had been half-dozing, suddenly yelped, kicked out of his chair by Sam (who sat in there instead now), and then moved over to fumble at his cell phone.

A few minutes later his highness appeared at the Lighthouse portal again.

"It's all been deactivated," Mark started, and then puffed up his chest a little, "Just so you know, I even created a memory matrix of these exact coordinates, so any time a signal like this pops up again, it will log the details of-"

Caelius gave him a look that said very much that he didn't appreciate nerd speak.

-"We'll be notified if this happens again," the Death assistant finished with a deep sigh. There was a long moment of silence that seemed to drag to long, which Mark awkwardly filled in by trying to place the attention off him. "So uh, how did it like, go?"

It worked, as all attention was indeed on Shiloh and Sam.

"Oh, nothing much," Sam started, casually and nonchalantly, "other than terrible weather conditions." She had pocketed the amulet. The Death lead then turned to look at Shiloh.

Shiloh said nothing either, any speech he might have had ready to make to the figure died on his lips as the car door closed, and the two were left standing in the rain. The portal was close, but Shiloh trailed after Sam, the cool rain a pleasant drizzle on his face as he tried to rein in his thoughts. He looked at his hands, and he realized they were empty, the medallion gone.

He looked up. Sam was gone too.

Clenching his fists, he snapped out of his confusion, knowing at once that if nothing else, there was one thing he could do. He followed her through the portal, arriving through the other side minutes after, sopping wet. Mark stood, looking half-awake and perturbed, meanwhile Sam occupied the chair he’d been in after they’d left.

Caelius’ arrival didn’t take long, the Death lead sweeping into the room just as Shiloh was trying to twist the water from his coat, and he stopped, looking up to watch the exchange between him and Mark. The exchange didn’t last long, however, before Mark became the second Death assistant of the day to throw Shiloh under the bus, pointedly turning Caelius’ attention to Sam and him.

Sam, it seemed, had no intention of divulging more info than she had to. Under the harsh stare of the Death lead, Shiloh was tempted to tattle, but thought better of it. He would have trusted the hooded figure, if he had not asked Shiloh to kill someone. The doubt was already there, and although Shiloh still clung to his morals, that didn’t mean he was going to run into Caelius’ arms and suddenly trust him. Instead of withering underneath his gaze, Shiloh stared back, straightening himself up and nodding.

“Yeah, it was raining cats and dogs,” he smiled, tacking onto Sam’s answer. He had no intention of lying for her, but until he sorted out this mess, being vague wasn’t entirely against his moral code.

“I’m soaked right to the underwear, I think,” he added with a chuckle. “If you don’t need my help anymore, sir, may I ask if Sam could escort me back to the dorms so I can go change? I wouldn’t want to get lost again.”

"If it wasn't <******** obvious," the Death lead stared at Shiloh with absolutely no room for humour, "I require the exact ********> details. If the two of you even utter one word that is inconsistent with each other you can consider yourselves both stripped of your title and role." Wait, Shiloh was a trainee, how did one exactly-

- "Well," Sam finally began, breaking the long silence. "We got to the portal, and-"

-"Sam."

The Death Hunter's head snapped up, betraying a moment of nervousness at the mention of her name before smoothing her features back into a neutral smile. "Yes, sir?"

"You have two mission reports to submit prior to this one. I will see you in my office with Mark in exactly one hour along with a proper report of everything you have compiled this week regarding this project."

"Wait what?" Mark began, "How come I have to-" he shut up as soon as attention was fixated back to him again -"... be in the office anyway because, like, I'm always there. Totally."

Sam smiled flawlessly. "Of course, I'll see you in an hour. I'll be sure to bring everything, sir." She nodded one more time and when she thought she was out of line of sight, hurriedly rushed away.

That left Mark, Caelius, and Shiloh.

"Continue," was pretty much the only thing the Death lead said, waiting.

The smile lessened a tiny bit, but refused to give way to Caelius’ anger. He nodded after the Death lead’s threat, and looked to Sam as she began to explain. Good, he thought, he could at the very least follow her lead, and she wouldn’t be able to worm from his sight any time soon.

…Until she did.

The smile was wiped off of his face now, as he watched Sam leave, and the medallion with her. Shiloh wasn’t at all a hateful person, but at this particular moment, he definitely didn't like Sam. He didn’t trust her. He wanted the medallion back, because he knew he could at least trust himself, and that no one would suffer for it. She had no reason to take it, he thought, grumbling in his head, and she to know that he would tell Caelius about it, that the Death lead would inevitably find out.

But he had given her a window. While Caelius would inevitably find out, it would be eventually, not immediately. The cogs started whirring in Shiloh’s brain again. Something didn’t add up, something wasn’t right. What it was evaded him, tucked just out of reach at the edges of his mind and he wished he had more answers, instead of just millions of questions.

He knew one thing though. He needed that medallion back, before anyone got hurt.

“I think, sir,” he addressed Caelius carefully. “It was a mistake to let her go. Whoever we met, instructed me to ‘smite’ someone and place a medallion on the body. She has that medallion and you’ve just given her an hour unsupervised with it.”

There was a very, very long pause. And then-

"I see. Then return it to me."

It was a good thing that Shiloh could still see Sam walking away thanks to the glow of a flashlight she had taken off the counter.

Caelius didn’t have to ask twice. Shiloh brushed past the lead and sprinted out the door, the only sound he made was the squeaking of his boots. It was only as he spotted Sam, identifiable by the bobbing glow of her flashlight, that he realized what he had agreed to.

He wasn’t sure he trusted Caelius with it either. In fact, he was almost sure he didn’t. But he guessed that he’d figure that problem out once he had the medallion in hand.

Catching up with Sam, he slowed to a jog, and reached for her shoulder.

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you? Stealing is wrong.”

Sam played coy. "Whatever are you talking about?" She was deliberately fiddling with the medallion as she spoke.

"Give me a break, I'm not that stupid," Shiloh narrowed his eyes at her, frowning. If she wanted to play games, it was fine by him. The longer she stalled, the longer the medallion stayed where he could see it, and didn't find it's way onto a fresh corpse.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about, and I'd really appreciate if you returned it. Truth and justice and all that, right?"

"Oh, this silly thing?" Sam annoyingly flashed the flashlight right into Shiloh's face. "I was going to report it anyway, being of higher rank than you and all, but if you want the honours, then catch."

She threw the medallion right at him.

Shiloh lifted his hand, shielding his eyes from the light.

“I’m sure you were,” Shiloh answered, not sounding convinced. “But even if you were,” which he still sounded like he didn’t think she was, “With all this going on, it’s dangerous out here, and it could fall into the wrong hands.”

He fumbled to catch the medallion, grasping it tightly in his hand.

“I don’t want anyone to die because of something I brought here.”

Technically Sam had been the one to bring it back to Deus, but the semantics were lost on Shiloh. Either way, he’d feel responsible.

"Well, it's all in your hands now." She shrugged, turned around and waved Shiloh off as she continued walking back to the main headquarters.

She left him standing there in the sand, and he looked down at his hands, and the medallion cradled in them. She was right.

She also hadn’t given him much time to think about how to deal with his next problem, whose glare he could practically feel across the beach. He turned the medallion over in his hand, having no excuse to bide his time, yet dawdling as long as he could all the same. He could pocket it, or say he lost it, but as he stared out towards the ocean, it was too far away from him to toss the medallion in, and he was sure that his doing so wouldn’t go unnoticed. Not to mention that such a plan wasn’t foolproof, and he still had to deal with the fact that no matter what he did with the medallion, whoever the hooded figure was expecting him to complete the task, not anyone else. Sighing, he reminded himself to figure out a way to thank Sam properly for her kindness in volunteering him later.

Not knowing what else to do at the moment, however, he headed back up the path to the lighthouse, medallion in hand. If only he could convince Caelius that it would be better for him to hold onto it, he thought, stepping back into the room.

The Death lead was still waiting, fixating Shiloh with his thousand yard stare of judgement.

Shiloh hazarded a grin, holding the medallion up, but making no further moves. If anything, his grip on it tightened.

“Got it.”

Caelius held out his hand and waited.
