Well he had been seriously considering calling a pause and apologizing for the blow, which had gone a little past what he would have considered 'play fighting', but... yeah...

...yeah to hell with that.

His hot temper flared violently, bringing a burning light to his eyes as he jerked up his hands reflexively to cover his face from the snap of the whip.

"Since we're on the same side, I am going to ask you to make damn sure that's the direction you want this to go, Pal." He growled, reaching for his own weapon slowly.

He'd had an upper hand, he recognized that and it surprised him quite a bit, not sure of how he'd managed to get there, and he equally recognized this was a way for Serp to try and get it back... but that didn't make it and less a source of fury.

If Realgar was fire, then Serpentine was ice. The Captain with the brightly colored uniform took a step back, not out of fear but merely to compose himself. The butt of the whip remained at the ready in his hand, but its damaging edge curled around his cream colored boots as he absorbed his sparring partner's emotional shift.

"If you are afraid, we can stop." It was said with a toss of his hair and a critical glance. He was willing to advance the fight further, at least in this controlled setting. "The enemy will not be as kind."

"You wish I was afraid of you!!" Realgar's already angry tone turned into a jagged snarl, hinting at an element of unpredictability in an otherwise controlled senario. "I don't make a habit of backing down!"

As if to prove it, he lunged forward again, trying to close the distance between himself and his opponent, to keep him from being able to use that whip to it's best advantage, and in with the lunge and powerful swing of his fist, there was the subtle sound, possibly hidden by his angry snarl, of something metalic hitting the earth with dull clinks and thumps as Realgar scattered caltrops with a flick of his wrist.

The gesture wasn't entirely without broadcast, though the actual toss might be missed in the larger gesture of the punch, Realgar had gone back to an quick, low step, feet coming off the ground as little as possible. His boots were thick, the soles difficult to puncture even with his sharp pointed weapon, but the idea was never the less to make sure that he pushed them aside rather than trod on them.

The more controlled of the two raised a single rainbow brow at the fury swelling in his fellow officer's voice. His eyes followed the movement of his sparring partner's hand, and although he could not hear the metallic falling sound of the weapon over the angry snarl... something had clearly occurred. He remembered Realgar's description of the caltrops and momentarily stood still.

Serpentine knew that with sharp, pointed metal death traps scattered all around in front of both Realgar and himself, there was only one safe place to avoid them. That place? Behind the increasingly angry Captain. He did not try to hold a large distance, probably within range of a good elbow back, but he put himself in such a position for two very particular reason. First, the Captain tried a tactic that had held up well in the past; he moved to wrap his whip around the other man's throat.

Second, the point of training was to learn how to overcome one's weaknesses - and often, one could not see his or her own weaknesses. Serpentine, an outside observer, could see what he percieved as a weakness in Realgar very clearly. If he did not share what he saw, then what good would it do either of them? "Control your anger, rather than allow it to control you."

"Control... THIS!" Realgar grappled to get a hold of the whip, to help make it harder to use it against him, but to be honest it was the most minor part of his 'strategy'.

Strategy was sort of a strong word for what amounted to solving the problem with a sledgehammer as he threw himself backward, aiming to bash the back his head into Serpe's face as hard as possible.

He was hearing Zinkenite rather than Serpe, condescending and snide, incapable of seeing the value in strategy other than his own. Being talked down to by a kid he'd graded in shop class. Released from lockers. driven home in the goddamn rain.

Serpentine's eyes narrowed as he struggled to pull the whip closer to the other captain's throat. They were equal in strength, which made the matter more difficult... but more perturbing was Realgar's seemingly inability to rebottle his anger. They were on the same side, ultimately. Yes, the vain whip-wielder was safe in his own superiority, as far as he was concerned, but that did not mean that the escalation had to include a personal grudge. If the fight continued to escalate at this pace, however, that personal grudge was going to be cemented, however.

Realgar's slam backwards was seen, but not completely avoidable. Serpentine lifted his head to avoid being hit squarely in the face... but that left his throat exposed. The back of the other captain's head crashed into his windpipe and made the victim gag. Distracted, his grip on the whip became more lax. The weapon ultimately tumbled to the ground. At the last minute, Serpentine attempted to use his open hands to take hold ofo Realgar's elbows and pull them down together.

That strike had been entirely too close to his fabulous face for Serpentine's comfort. In response, the green-and-gold clad Captain's hiss became tinged with anger, "Then stop acting like one."

Realgar made a sound that might have been a laugh strangled with an angry growl, trying to drive the back of his boot down Serpe's shin an attempt to get himself loose.

As much as he was 'unable' to rebottle his anger, he was also disinclined to try. Anger was fuel, as far as he was concerned, and he enjoyed using it.

Better to be angry than to focus on the things that hurt.

Serpentine endured the kick in order to take the man down with him. On the ground, both of them were equal. Weapon, strength, emotion... they were too equally matched in other ways. Maybe this would make them equal.

"Yield," he hissed. He was swiftly growing tired - literally tired, thanks to employing his teleportation ability. Yet, his pride would not allow him to be the one to stop this fight. He could, and would, broke no weakness. Realgar was not the only one who had control issues.

His first thought was to continue the escalating path of violence. His opponent had burned a not inconsiderable amount of energy. It wasn't inconceivable that he could win.

...Part of him kinda wanted to. Then again...

...What the hell was the point? They weren't here for some kind of 'beat the ever-loving tar out of each other' prize. He was pretty sure that they hadn't come up with a medal for that yet, even in the broken system they were working in.

"Fine. Whatever floats your boat." He growled, trying to damp down and extinguish the fire in him that wanted to keep going until someone was bleeding and broken.

"Teleporting's still not a great battle strategy. You oughta save it for last ditch, not because you don't want to ********' step on something."

Serpentine immediately released Realgar whenever he yielded. No, the other Captain had not used those exact words, but that was how his vain sparring partner chose to take them.

The green and gold clad Captain pushed himself to his feet and immediately began brushing off his uniform. He tilted his head to show he was catching his companion's words, although when he did, he openly snorted.

"Perhaps." Serpentine replied stiffly, summoning his whip to his hand. He coiled it together and then placed it in its customary position inside his sash - a final sign that the fight was over. "But worth trying. I avoided injury and could continue fighting."

Then, since they were obviously to the part of the training where they made observations, he asked, "Why are you angry?"

"You still burned a s**t ton of energy and I didn't." He pointed out, stubbornly, though he wasn't sure it was actually worth continuing to argue anyway, frowning and glancing away rather than answer the question he'd been asked, at least not immediately.

"You mean right this ********' second or 'in general'? Cause one's gonna take a lot longer."

There was truth in his sparring partner's words, and he accepted them with a nod. It was a disadvantage to the straregy. If he had been fighting a true opponent, then it could have cost him dearly. "True. I will need reserves, in the future."

Serpentine did not really care about his Realgar's personal problems. They all had issues, either in their powered lives or in their daily lives, to deal with. Still, he had been the one to ask the question, so he shrugged, "Either. It fuels you, but also blinds you. A dual-edged sword."

"I dunno, fighting with blinders on seems to work great for everyone else." He snorted, with more than a touch of vitrol. "I would think that strategy would work out great."

It was what he'd started to see that fueled his rage lately. It wasn't that he'd just started to be angry, he was just angry about different things than he used to be.

"How long have you been doing this?" He asked. It could be taken as a serious non sequitur, but actually it was related to things that were starting to really get under his skin.

All this time and this was really the first time he'd actually worked to train his fighting skills with another agent instead of standing at the side lines while awkward, overpowered angry teenagers bonded with each other and ignored him.

Every word that the other Captain spoke was carefully recorded into Serpentine's memory. Clearly, he had problems with how others handled themselves. It was a frustration that the florist cetainly understood. The Negaverse had begun changing for the better, in certain respects. That did not mean it was perfect. Was it not their job to make it so?

The question was strange, but Serpentine gave Realgar the benefit of the doubt that it was of importance. So, he merely raised a rainbow brow and answered, "Over a year. Why?"

"Just curious, trying to figure some s**t out." Realgar grumbled, unhelpfully, though he apparently had more questions. "Been in about two myself... but who gives a damn. " He shrugged, and added. "You get much training when you signed on? You fight more like an action movie than a brawl."

He always wondered about that, how many self defense classes in DC were packed to the gills with powered folk, but he was equally curious to know how the other captain's experience stacked up against his own.

How long had it taken him, personally, to reach Captain? He thought it might have taken a little longer than it took some, not for lack of enthusiasm at the time.
