Shiloh nodded, watching the white paper on Robert's hand slowly turn red. He didn't even seem to notice the injury, or at least, he didn't care about it, and Shiloh could only imagine what sort of tragedy had befallen Robert that he would ignore such a sting. From the clues he had found, he supposed he was better off not imagining at all.

Robert stood finally, pulling his hand away and lifting a bag with his other, making light of the situation. Shiloh smiled and shook his head. That was supposed to be his job, and here Robert was stealing it with a truly awful joke. He stood, and gathered up the rest of the items and bags, his arms overloaded.

“Sure, sure, here I was concerned and you were just trying to get out of work.” He laughed a little, making a face at Robert. “Lucky you though, now we get to make a pit stop at the infirmary. I don’t think toilet paper is going to cut it.”

A low, and elongated groan escaped him as Shiloh mentioned the infirmary. "Nnnnoooo," He whined, pulling the paper off of his hand. "I'm in there enough, don't wanna go for this. Just give me a second." If there was one perk to working that long at the infirmary, it was his ability to handle situations on his own. So he disappeared into the bathroom, and opened up the cabinet, searching around until he found a pair of tweezers. He turned on the tap, and waited for the water to turn scalding hot before running the tip under it. He kept it there for a minute, and then got to work.

It was slow work, and a hiss of pain left him every time he pulled a shard out, but eventually he retrieved all of the pieces that were visible. He turned the water up to freezing, and ran his hand under it to wash away the blood. It wasn't very effective, but eventually the cuts just looked like seeping, tiny red scratches. The blood that escaped was slow, and easily ignored.

He looked around for something to use as a bandage, but he couldn't find a thing. So he left it out just the way it was.

"Come on." He grumbled, as he existed the bathroom. "Let's just get this stuff back down to my room, I've got bandages there."

“Well, you probably should have thought…” Shiloh was going to remind Robert that he probably should have considered those things before picking up broken glass, but he quickly remembered what the broken glass had contained and closed his mouth, following Robert to the washroom. He was the medical expert, anyway.

“You’ve got a good eye for that,” Shiloh said as he watched Robert pull shard after shard from his hand. Shiloh couldn’t imagine it was pleasant, but Robert kept a steady hand through it all. Then it was over, and Robert’s hand looked less angry and red than it had a several moments before, though there were no bandages to be found.

Jokingly, Shiloh offered him another roll of toilet paper, before hefting everything once again into his arms.

“You’re the boss,” he said lightly, trailing after Robert.

Robert kept his hand still, but with his other hand, he picked up the roll of toilet paper that Shiloh offered him and bounced it off the guys head. A raucous laugh escaped him, and he left the room, holding the door out for Shiloh to exit it. He closed the door behind them, and locked it quietly. Then he placed his uncut hand on the door itself, taking a quiet moment.

He whispered something. It was hard to hear, but the end of it sounded like the word must have been goodbye. His hand slid down the door, and he turned back to Shiloh, patting his back.

"Two floors of stairs. You ready to carry all that down at once?"

Shiloh glared at Robert’s retreating back, bending over to retrieve the roll of paper and trotting after him.

“Very funny,” Shiloh said as he made his way out the door, past Robert. But despite his tone, he was having a hard time holding back the smile from his face. Robert’s moment of silence as he locked the door, however, had no problem clearing it away. Shiloh frowned, and did his best to occupy himself with something else, shifting the bags in his arms and looking down the opposite end of the hall until Robert’s hand settled on his back, and his voice, steadier than the soft farewell he’d given the door, let him know he was done.

“Of course I can,” Shiloh grinned, hefting the bags and toilet paper in his arms. “You aren’t the only farm boy you know.”

"HA!" Robert patted Shiloh's back again, this time hard, and headed for the stairs. "All right, I won't underestimate you anymore, tough guy." He chuckled a few more times, very quietly, as he led Shiloh down the two flights into the dungeon, and all the way down a long, pitch dark hall. His moldy wooden door creaked when he opened it, and reached inside to flick on a tiny little runic lamplight. It was the first thing he'd gotten after the tournament.

"Just dump everything on the floor, nothing particular, I'll deal with it eventually." He looked mournfully at the dingy, grey single bed - the only furniture in the room. Compared to where they'd just come from.. this was a nightmare.

Shiloh laughed too, feeling more at ease with the laughter than the tears. It was a better look too, on Robert, the man's face seemingly made for smiling. Shiloh's smile, however, deteriorated as they made their way to the basement, the dimly lit stairwells leading down to it foreboding, the floorboards creaking beneath their feet.

He really could not imagine why anyone would willingly choose to inhabit such a space. The hallway of the dorms themselves was stony and dungeon-like, the cold atmosphere of it giving him goosebumps. He was pretty sure they had even passed shackles at one point. Following Robert to his room, Shiloh stepped gingerly past the squeaking door, and stared at dismay at the room within. It was barely liveable.

"Uh, well, it's... It could be worse I guess," he said lightly, setting the things down carefully on the floor despite Robert's instruction, shooting the man a good-natured grin.

Robert knew that what Shiloh was really saying, in his sad attempt to be positive, was 'at least you're not dead'. And it was true, this was a step up from a grave. A very small step. A dingy, creaky step.

But a step.

He smiled at Shiloh, thankful for his attempt. "Yeah. And now it's home. So." He sat down on his bed, and it creaked with complaint. "I better get used to it."

He had to. But Shiloh did not. "Thanks for helping me, buddy. It's not every day someone as good as you comes along. I won't forget it."

Actually, what Shiloh had been thinking of by worse was that Robert could have been living in the questionable bathrooms they'd passed on the way here. That would be infinitely worse. He had no idea that Roberts depression ran so deep, only that the man was sad - death hadn't crossed his mind as even a remote option.

Shiloh stood awkwardly, having set down the bags and wondering what to do next. He instinctively thought to ask if Robert needed help unpacking, but the man had already settled on the bed and thanked him, and Shiloh assumed that to mean that he wanted his space.

"I'm sure you'll find some way to brighten up the place," Shiloh said, forcing a smile. The basement gave him the creeps, he wasn't sure anything short of moving the sun downstairs would brighten it up. But he would be hopeful, for Robert.

"And it's no problem, really. If you need any help with anything else, you have my number."

He waved, and then let himself out the door.
