Sighing, Celestia simply shook her head, a hint of remorse in her tone. "It is far more complicated than that... I could never look at him the same; returning would be far to cruel for all involved."

He wasn't aware? How lucky. "Long ago, ages ago, the blood pae were resolved to attack and eliminate the faun... They came at once upon their wings, attacking, unwilling to allow a single survivor..."

The princess's eye opened, looking to Faroth's face. "I have seen it, this battle. The weariness and the resolve of soldiers as they face their end; the look of children frightened for the safety of their fathers, yet unable to understand the situation. Earthmother was there, as were the original circle... It was so very, eerily silent... The only thing that could be heard were hushed voices and murmurs. Prayers to the spirits..." A single tear ran down her cheek as blood ran down from his eyes, nose, and ears, dripping onto her face. "How many pae did I see fall that day? Angels falling from the sky, raining arrows and hot tar on the faun below. Fighting on foot as well, to either side of me as swords, glistening red, ripped limbs and freed innards from their bodies. We were losing, outnumbered, and each way I looked all I could see were others falling."

"There was nothing I could do."

"The air was heavy with smoke, scented with the rancidness of burning flesh and the metallic notes of the blood pooling on the ground. All you could hear was cutting, the sound of bodies falling, and such horrid cries of pain... The blood pae were merciless, coming at me... It was so very frightening, and all I could do was simply watch, unable to do a thing to stop the horror."

Blinking, she shook her head, still looking at him through the vision, even though it caused her pulse to race and her stomach to turn. "Even looking to you now, I see you as one of the fallen, with blood dripping from your eyes, ears, and nose onto me. Its is so very warm, that blood..." at that, she sighed, closing her eyes again and focusing on breathing slowly and calming her heart rate. "For a pae never having been subject to violence in her kingdom, it was quite a startling realization.

That was an understatement if there had ever been one. Even so, as she spoke, she could feel a sort of pressure being lifted from her chest, a relief.

Faroth met her gaze evenly, noting the change in the way she looked at him as the vision took over, hallucinations replacing what was truly before her. He wanted to stop her, stop the graphic recount of this vision the spirits had brought to her; but he couldn't. Whether he was enveloped by the horror, or because he believed that allowing her to finish her tale might help in some way, even he couldn't say. But either way, he held his tongue until she finished, though his own stomach was turning just from the images created by her descriptions.

He did note the word choice she made in one sentence with passing interest. 'We were losing...'

Her recollection slowed, seeming to calm when she finally closed her eyes and added her understated response to it all. Yes, startling. Lifting one eyebrow, Faroth couldn't help but respond in kind: "So...what I'm getting from this is that you've not had the best first impression of Telrunya."

While her eyes were still closed, Faroth reached up to wipe the 'blood' from her face. There was no real blood, of course, only her warm tears, gently brushed away. "So...this is it then? This is where it all started?" he mused softly, putting everything together. Traumatic personal events, compounded with nightmarish visions of a war generations before either of their times. "I knew there was a war, but my knowledge was general, not detailed or first-hand," he added quietly. "It's not a secret, but nor does it seem to be common knowledge. What I know, I heard directly from Earthmother. And again, not in so much detail. It was more...a history lesson and a warning in one, I think" he said thoughtfully. "It's been a couple years or so really...we were just blending with the Isle again after absence for centuries, so...I took it to mean that we needed to see where the other Pae'il stood on things."

He shifted slightly, letting her rest against him, and reached up to brush back some of her multi-hued hair. The silken strands flowed softly over his fingers and he hurried to brush them back out of the way before he irritated her with the motion. What was he saying? Oh yeah...

"I'll admit, the Isle isn't without its dangers," he continued with a sigh. "However, I've made friends on the Isle. Angels, demons, fae, even some who are a mix in between. I can't imagine these souls being the same as the ones heard about in history. Heck, the only danger one faces from meeting Takeko is possibly overeating, especially if she's been baking again," he chuckled softly, thinking fondly of the angel woman.

"I'm not sure how reassuring anything I say is going to be though," he sighed. "You've seen some horrible things, Celestia. I don't know how I'd deal with doing the same, to be completely honest. I don't know the magic words to say or what to do to make things better. I will apologize again that you got stuck here with me. I suppose that hasn't been making this whole situation any easier, with everything else going on, and just...accidentally looking at me triggers hallucinations." He felt guilty, even though he logically knew that it wasn't something he could help, nor was it his fault. Didn't stop him from feeling bad. "I guess I can't do much about that, but...if there is something I can do to help, please...promise you'll let me know. Okay?"

Laughing lightly, the princess shook her head and shrugged. "It would appear as such, though... in afterthought... Surely I reacted too harshly and only made it worse." After all, these persistent images were not present immediately after the vision; it was not until after she ended her marriage and returned home, locking herself in her room save for the times she spoke with the Chieftain and those who needed to be made aware of the situation... That was when it developed into something past a memory.

A small smile came to her lips as she felt his fingers on her face, the feeling having a very soothing effect on her, similar to how a child might be consoled after a bad dream with rubs to the head.

That was all these visons were, after all: bad dreams.

"I understand that the blood pae of this isle are not the same as their ancestors, yet... That does not take the fear I now feel away. The uneasiness and the distrust I feel when I hear of them. It is the reason I could never return to Aquos; I want to remember him as he was, not as I may see him now, and I wish for him to remember me as I was. It would be too cruel to bear otherwise.."

Opening her eyes again, she calmly shook her head. "Actually, just speaking it out loud, telling it to someone else and not being labeled mad as I feared I might... I believe that alone holds value," her hand reached up to touch his cheek, smearing blood against it, yet it was no longer warm or wet. It felt just as his cheek might feel. "Ah... So it really is in my head... That is a relief," the princess said softly, as if to herself, sighing afterwards with an equally quiet, dry chuckle. "Surely the spirits enjoy themselves at my expense, putting me into situations that I cannot do anything to change, nor to improve. I am often no longer aware of my own motives, nor confident in my ability to be of use and... this is a frightening thing"

It had never even occurred to Faroth to think she might be crazy, though he could understand her fear of being seen as such in retrospect. Maybe it was because he had seen the honest fear in her eyes during these 'episodes'; he couldn't help but believe her. Not that he believed that these injuries and horrors that she was seeing were real...but that she really saw them and believed that they were.

It was Faroth's turn to freeze when he felt her fingertips on his cheek. Such a simple action, yet he felt his heart rate pick up, the skin growing warm beneath her fingers. Woah, Faroth. Calm down, he lectured himself, realizing why she did so. Whatever she was seeing was all in her mind. If it was reassuring for her to know that and be able to prove it, then he was glad to assist. Smiling slightly and relaxing, he reached up and placed his hand over hers. "Yeah, no problems here, nothing more than usual," he joked. "Well, maybe a little dirty, but nothing a bath won't fix when we get out of here," he chuckled softly.

He squeezed her shoulder lightly, shifting to try and make himself a more comfortable 'pillow'. Not that she seemed to be complaining about that. "I won't pretend to be an expert on the spirits or their motives," he shrugged the shoulder she wasn't leaning against. "But, maybe I can offer a thought, an obnoxiously optimistic way of looking at things, as I can be wont to do," he joked at his own expense, chuckling. "Maybe...they're doing so for a reason. Because they know you can handle it. Because, challenges can be frightening to face, but once you do, you rise above them, all the stronger for doing so. Maybe...they have plans for you, something only you can do, but only after facing these challenges first." He paused, feeling a bit odd, as if lecturing a princess was something he did regularly. "Err...just a thought," he said with a sheepish grin and another half-shrug.

Her hand flinched as she felt his against the back of it, her cheeks flushing as her own pulse began to increase. Glancing away, embarrassed from it, trying to calm herself down, the princess was all too aware of his warmth holding her from either side, his warmth all around her. Calm down... deep breaths... you are making a fool of yourself... she could almost hear her mellon chiding to her in her thoughts. Perhaps she was.

"I had not thought of such a thing..." Shrugging, she remained quiet to consider his point. What if, after all, it was something meant for her to know? Something the spirits thought she could handle? If it was supposed to help her protect those dear to her later? She had never thought of it that way, but it seemed to echo many a warning of Clarivoyance's: that she would not learn of her power, nor how to make use of it, until she was at peace with herself. In her marriage, there were always hidden doubts, so the spirits forced her to deal with the situation. Her mind had rejected to objectively consider the vision and its implications, so they forced her to relive it until she did.

Perhaps these spirits weren't quite so cruel after all. Just... misunderstood...

As her mind wandered to this, there was a warm tingling in her chest, as it egging her on to return her eyes to him. It was reminiscent of the feeling given to her after a dream, encouraging her to fly from the tree and happen upon Earthmother.

This feeling told her that she should look back, that everything would be alright when she did.

Obediently, her eyes did, widening as they looked over silver, skin, free of cuts, burns, or holes. Skin as it was meant to be, as it actually was. Smiling softly, the tears came faster than before, forcefully falling down her face as her breath turned ragged. She shook her head, her other hand reaching up to feel his free cheek as her smile widened, despite the tears and her body's shaking. Before he could react, she shook her head, "I... I can see you..." her voice came in softly between hics, "I... see you... As you..." this was perhaps the most genuine smile he would have ever seen from her; there would be an immense warmness and gratitude in it.

Faroth was alarmed at first when tears began rolling down her cheeks again, however...her expression gave him pause. Far different than before, despite the tears, she wore the warmest smile, shaking as if nearly overcome by emotion. He had to strain to hear her between hiccuping sobs, but when he did, he began to smile as well. The emotional surge seemed contagious, he'd been so concerned with wanting to help her so badly, he nearly felt like crying himself.

Instead, he laughed freely in relief, squeezing her shoulders in a one-armed hug. "Well, in that case, I apologize that there's not much to look at. Still, I'd say that means we're making improvement!" He had no idea what had sparked the change, but he felt elated that it seemed he'd managed to help, at least in some small way, with aiding Celestia on the road to recovery. Alright, perhaps it was a small step, still...all journeys had to start somewhere. He couldn't help but share in her joy, even if it was just a tiny bit.

They had been grinning at each other like fools for a moment before he was seized by a strange urge. She was so close...it wouldn't take much on his part, just a slight movement to lean in...

His cheeks flushed warmly as he hurriedly banished the thought. Where had that even come from? She just seemed so happy, and he was happy for her, and...that did not make that thought appropriate at all! His expression only faltered for a second, giving way to awkwardness instead. The skin of his cheeks beneath her hands seemed to be burning, and he figured he'd be turning red at this rate. "Err...alright, asking forgiveness first, but..." He swiftly drew her into a full hug.

No, not what he'd been previously thinking, but a safer alternative that also allowed him to break away from her gaze, if just for a moment. "This may be just the first step, but...it shows you can beat this," he murmured encouragingly.

The princess shook her head, laughing wholeheartedly at his comments. "I am certain I appear just a mess. You have the luxury of a darker coloring; any dirt on my skin is quite blatant in contrast." It would be foolish to assume that this meant the visions were completely done with, that things would return back to normal. Surely, it would never be quite the same as before, but, this was an important step.

It gave her hope; it gave her a light in what had been her darkness.

She hadn't even been aware at how long her hands remained on Faroth's cheeks, nor how much time passed in this euphoria she felt. Quite honestly, even her worries of what would become of them in this place seemed to be replaced by her pure joy.

It wasn't until she felt her hands grow warm that she realized that the gesture may be taken for something else. The princess's eyes averted out of embarrassment, her own cheeks taking on Faroth's warm, colored hue, as she brought her hands back to her chest and laughed lightly, albeit awkwardly. "So-...!" As she attempted to apologize, his own words and movement interrupting hers. Palms were momentarily sandwiched between them before falling to her side only to join in accepting his gesture by wrapping firmly around him.

Celestia's head pressed against his skin, silken hair falling past her shoulder in various strands as she did so. "I do believe you are right..." her voice faded as her eyes closed, the scent and the warmth of his body, the soft drumming of his heart, filling her senses once more. No... This was bad... But... It felt so natural... So... perfect... Better to brush it off; this would be inappropriate to think about under normal circumstances, unthinkable under these. "I shall have you compensate me for these actions after we escape... Perhaps by joining me for an afternoon tea? I have not had company to share it with in far too long. Certainly that is not too much to ask~?" There was almost a giddy, teasing note in her tone at the prospect of having a guest again.

Faroth chuckled, the tension breaking with the laughter as he pulled back. "Of course, princess, it would be my honor to join you for tea," he bowed his head, struggling to even pretend to be serious at this point. Too much relief and joy in the air to remain too serious. Snickering a bit, he took her hand in his and lifted it; something he'd seen done in more polite society. "I do believe I can fit an afternoon tea into my busy schedule once we return. It's a date, my dear."

A beat passed before he froze, realizing what he'd just said. Return of the reddened face, blood rushing to his cheeks as he stammered a reply, "Err...not like that, I mean. Like...an appointment, or a meeting, or..." Oh spirits. Swept up in the moment, his mouth had betrayed him by running away from his brain. It happened more often than he was comfortable with. Unceremoniously, he raised a hand to cover his face. What to say? Should he backpedal? Would she take it the wrong way? Coughing slightly, looking aside, he muttered, "Um...sorry. Not...what I meant..."

Celestia laughed in turn with him as they continued on this path, teasing, "It should be an honor! I do not invite just any pae to join me, after all." As he took one of her hands, she brought the other to cover her mouth, playing along. "Oh, sir Faroth, how rash of you! But if you insist, well, it cannot be helped then," the was a pause as she bowed her head down in turn, "A date, then, it shall be."

Her head lifted up, eyes blinking as be began to stammer. What was he going on about...? "Well, yes, naturally it would be a meeting of sorts; however else are we to share tea if we are not at the same table?" It seemed pretty straightforward to her: he would come over, they would make small talk over tea and pastries (oh, she might have to find out which were his favorites) and, as they finished, they would part ways. Simple as that. Why was he making such a deal over...

It was then the notion of it being a date clicked, her own cheeks reddening in response and her eyes shyly glancing away. Oh, this is what he had accidentally implied. It actually hurt a bit that he would be so vehemently against the idea of having a date with her, but, that was to be expected. Wait. Why did that matter to her at all...? No, no no no. Stop that train of though, right here, right now. It was unnecessary and inappropriate and... ugh!

"Yet again, if you prefer it as such, I can arrange it to resemble a meeting. It will not be quite as personal, mind you, but still nice..." Rather than continue anything else, she glanced back to the hallway, wondering how long it had been since they began to rest. Something felt like they should get a move on if they had time to make such jokes.

"Perhaps we should continue searching for an exit...?" she suggested lightly.

The realization that if he hadn't said anything, everything could have gone on just fine, actually seemed to make things worse. They had been talking so freely, seeming so relaxed and at ease with one another, then he had to go and blow it. Geez, screw up everything, why don't you, Faroth? It would figure, only his mind would have taken that the wrong way. They could have just kept talking if he'd played it off without saying anything, but noooo...

"I'm...really, really sorry," he stammered, rubbing his neck awkwardly. "I...didn't mean it like that. That was completely inappropriate." He scrambled to explain, thinking she'd thought him crude for even suggesting such a thing. By the Earth, could he be any more foolish? She was a princess, if not in this land, she still existed on a much higher tier than a foolish commoner like him.

Wait...why the hell was he even thinking about this at all?!?

He let her take over the speaking, rubbing his eyes and muttering to himself, "You'll be lucky if she still even wants to have tea with you, you clumsy oaf." He continued staring at his hands as she spoke, listening, but also carrying on his own thoughts in his head. Geez, what was he doing? He'd never acted this way before. Of course, he'd never been in such a situation before either. Was it the danger? Their unknown future? Or just some strange combination of adventure and being alone with a beautiful young woman, one who happened to need a little help in dealing with some issues, that had him acting so strangely?

Or was it some deep-seated desire to feel like a hero?

Suddenly sobered by the thought that he might be acting on some subconscious, but selfish desire, he sighed and slumped. He'd apparently said the right thing enough earlier that now all he could say was the wrong. It all balanced out. He was a screw-up and a goof, as far as most Pae were concerned. Too much success would ruin that, destroying the natural order. "I think...that might be for the best," he agreed quietly, pulling away to stand. Once on his hooves again, he offered her a hand in standing up.

He may have been embarrassed, but he was still a gentleman.

Waving a hand in front of her, Celestia brushed off his apologies with a small, almost disappointed, smile, as if she had been hoping for something to happen only to have it fail. Perhaps she had been.

It seemed silly, sometimes, the way she was treated. They wished for her to integrate herself among the normals pae, to act to them as more a friend and a companion than a leader, and then they were the ones to treat her as if she was different. As if she deserved special treatment. Their mouths spoke of one thing, but their actions spoke of another. It was really quite confusing at times, as she really never thought herself better or above anyone else, just blessed with the power to help protect them all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Her head tilted as he took a more solemn expression, her curiosity piquing. Had she sad something wrong?

Nodding, she moved to stand herself up, glancing up as she placed hr hands on her knees to see Faroth's hand. The smile returned to her face as she reached for it, "Many thanks~" she chimed lightly, taking his hand and using it to help her stand. It seemed so rough compared to her own's skin... and she could almost feel... Nope. Stop. Nope.

This was getting ridiculous; the princess could almost feel the (sexual) tension in the air at this point, yet neither of them was willing to bring it up and risk being made a fool of. At least, what was why she chose not to. Presumably, he simply did not feel something similar. Looking down, her horn glowed lightly as she levitated the bag, moving it into his arms and stopping the magic only when she was sure he had a firm grip on it. She did a similar thing with the lantern, though, this she brought to herself. Her eyes returned to him as her head motioned down the hall. "Won't you lead the way, Misseur~?"

"Of course," Faroth answered with a smile, though the expression was touched lightly by sadness. No, no time to focus on his disappointment with himself. This was no time for such nonsense. They had more important concerns, as the princess had reminded him. He kept trying to be encouraging, talking about 'when' they got out and 'when' they got back to the Tree, but if they just sat around talking, or stammering apologizes for being inconsiderate, bumbling fools, as in his case, then they'd never get anywhere.

He allowed himself to be distracted for a moment by her magical display, shaking his head as he took the pack from the air. "I'm not sure I'll ever get used to seeing that," he mused, just a touch of honest amusement in his expression. So many new skills and sights among the Faun who lived in the Tree these days; it certainly wasn't as boring as he remembered it being when he was a child. Then again, perhaps it hadn't been all the boring then...he was just more easily distracted than he was now.

Speaking of which...

Shaking his head, he checked the clasp before slipping the pack onto his back. "Right! Resuming our great adventure after a brief rest!" he quipped in as cheerful a voice as he could muster. Yeah, 'rest'...well, at least they'd managed to rest their hooves for a bit and the trail mix should give them a little more energy until they could find a more permanent place to stop and make camp. If they didn't find the others first.

Pausing while staring down the hallway to the left, he shrugged. "Well, I went all the way around earlier. Aside from that blocked off corridor, there's nowhere else to go aside from these central rooms. I suppose we just...pick a door and start searching?" he shrugged helplessly. He wasn't sure how this might lead to a way out, but stranger things had already happened today; he wasn't taking anything for granted at this point.

"Yes, onwards we continue!"

Laughing lightly and looking ahead, the princess copied his motion. "It surely is a place to start. With any luck, it shall have some indication of a way out or... perhaps something to drink..." her tone faded as she swallowed, her throat rather dry at this point. She really was quite parched, but felt it unnecessary to complain any further than simply mentioning the point. It would do nothing more than to dampen the mood they were desperately trying to keep upbeat.

Walking to a random door, she stood in front of it, taking in the old, decaying wood and the smell of rot. How... pleasant... Her eyes returned to Faroth with another half shrug as she lifted the lantern to better light the doorknob, the light catching in the glass globe to the side and working to amplify it. That was pretty cool.

It wasn't that she didn't want to be the first to enter the room, just...

No. She quite plainly did not want to enter first. No point in pretending anything else, but, that did not mean the princess had to vocally admit it. Instead, her irises flicked from it to Faroth's and back, trying to silently encourage him to take the first step.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 08, 2013 8:53 pm

Managing to chuckle softly, Faroth shook his head, also shaking off the lingering doubt. It was fine; everything was fine between them. Alright, he made a fool of himself; what was new? Celestia didn't seem to be holding it against him, especially if she was still smiling and joking. Some of the tension eased from his shoulders.

And immediately returned once he focused on the task at hand. Celestia raised a good point; neither of them had been carrying any water with them before, and now they only had whatever fluid they could get from...what? The bananas? Not much to depend on. And the other dried food wouldn't do them much good either if they died of thirst first.

He tried to shove such morbid thoughts aside, yet others took their place. The door below, locked, with the broken chairs behind it. The archway he'd found with the wall of soil blocking it had looked like others had tried to dig their way out. His brain kept putting the scenario together that someone had been trying to get away from something. But what? Even if it had been long ago, there was no telling what else they might find.

If she hadn't hesitated, he might have leaped for the door before she could get there. But no...perhaps she was thinking the same thing? No, perhaps not the same thing, but something similar. What if something horrible waited for them behind these doors? Even if it wasn't something actively trying to kill them like the spiders below, what if it was simply an awful discovery of something that had happened here long ago? She didn't need any more nightmare fuel to add to the fire.

Trying to offer her an encouraging smile before proceeding, he took hold of the handle with a deep breath, turned until he heard a click, and pushed the door open.

It was dark inside, of course, and Faroth moved aside slightly to allow some of the light from the lantern in while trying to keep Celestia shielded behind him. The soft glow touched upon the edge of a table. Nothing too threatening yet. He moved further, the door opening wider with a protesting groan. He caught the edge of what looked like it had once been a plush bed, covered in fine fabrics and pillows, though it had seen better days. Cautiously, he proceeded, noting that while similar finery to that they had seen below remained, so did more personal items. Something that looked like...an ornate hair clip? Dulled by time, but it had once likely been a fine item. Other bangles, somewhat tossed carelessly about on a dressing table, as if one had removed them there while settling in to relax.

Or perhaps his imagination was running away from him. Either way, he hadn't seen anything terrifying in here yet. He turned and glanced over his shoulder to his companion. "Can't say for sure...but my guess would be some sort of living, or at least sleeping quarters?"

Celestia took a step back as he took the lead, holding the lantern up enough to help him see. Her own eyes followed, watching his back. Had she been holding her breath? A small sigh escaped her lips as the door creaked open, groaning from having to move after spirits knew how long of being closed. Cautiously, she followed behind Faroth.

But, even as she did, she couldn't particularly see anything. Each time her the lantern's light seemed to touch something in the room, he would move in the way and block her view. How unfortunate, and a little irritating... If she didn't know better, the princess might have thought he was purposely doing so.

After all, if there was something horrifying, who was to say seeing something like it wouldn't be all it took to bring the visions back.

"Oh, is it?" she mused, lifting a hand to illuminate the room instead of the lantern. It really did seem quite normal, if not old. "Perhaps we should have continued and rested in here instead," the princess joked, moving to Faroth's side and glancing up at him before continuing to look at the desks. Or, more specifically, the desk's drawers.

Setting the lamp on the table, she freed her hands to begin sorting through the various things lying about the desk. "If we could find something... a hint on an exit... perhaps..." she mumbled, mostly to herself, as long, white fingers sifted through tarnishing, rusting jewelry and fading papers.
