Onward and upward she climbed, stead fast and determined. Fear still swamp inside of her, making her knees shake, but still she moved on, slowly but steadily. Suddenly, her back hoof slipped on the narrow edge of the ravine. Instinctively, she grabbed for the nearest branch, gripping it tightly with her teeth. Carefully, she pulled herself back up. Panting, she lowered her head to catch her breath and there, under the branch on the path, were hoof prints that lead onward. Fear spiked at the back of her mind, numbing her very body. She knew those prints... But no.. Impossible.. Shaking her head, she crept onward. Slowly she moves on, step by step, breathing in, breathing out. There was no way, no possible, feasible way. She was panicking, that's all. She needed to calm down, relax. Lost in her thoughts, she slipped slightly and, upon turning to catch herself, she saw more and more foot prints. Desperation was slowly transitioning to fear in her heart. Shaking her head to clear it, she moved forward on shaking legs. Finally, the mud splattered and bloodied doe pulled herself up over the lip of the ravine. Before her, a dry cypress grove appears. On the ground, in the drying mud, those hoof prints lead her forward, deep into the grove. Swallowing a lump in her throat, she follows. An angry snort and quickly approaching hooves tear Mirage's eyes from the tracks. A boar, huge and charging attacks. Rearing with a cry, Mirage bats at her, landing a grazing attack on her side as the boar rams her. Her own anger bubbling out in a frustrated snarl, Mirage bared her fangs and lashed out. Under the taste of fur and mud, blood bloomed on her tongue. She gripped tightly and tore, only releasing to scream as a tusks gored her side. Just as the boar managed another hit, the once white doe managed to spin and lash out with a strong kick. Both hind hooves connected solidly in the boar's belly, sending it flying back into a tree. Panting in anger and pain, Mirage stepped up to the dying boar and glared into her swimming dark eyes. Her own, orange and burning, outlined in fear. She rose on hind legs and sent her front hooves plummeting down into the boar's skull. For a moment, she stood there in its mess, the warm blood cooling fast on her legs. The she looked up, and saw where she was. Mirage had never been a superstitious doe. She believed not in gods, or ghosts, or demons. But with the fur and prints and other things she had seen... Who knew if the ghastly Ghost Thistle actually wandered these woods? But the hoof prints went on, and so she must follow. Her vision grows hazy as the moon lit fog blankets the marsh. Forward she steps, curious, for it seems a few figures dance ahead. But the closer she gets, the slower she goes. She watches, trembling, as their shadows stretch and their voices hiss and snarl. "Don't worry, momma. They're not real." Squeaked a tiny voice that caused her to shout and step back. Before her, a tiny foal, grey, with sick greens swirling about a downed blue. No, it couldn't be... But she'd recognize those cold white eyes anywhere. The Salt In Your Wounds, her devil of a child, the one who had taken Haze from her, sat before her, blinking up at her and yawning. It wasn't possible. It couldn't be. "Here, follow me. I'll show you." The foal stumbled forward on weak legs, tripping off into the fog. Confused and frantic, she followed, watching with suspicious eyes as the demon shadows around her dissapated, taking their chanting with them. They were much deeper now. Darkness was closing in. How close was she? She wondered. "Over here, momma, this way," Mirage turned back to the child, only to watch with horror struck eyes as a dark wispy shadow leaked from the ground, wrapped itself around the child's throat and with terrifying force, pulled it under ground as though it were water. Before the child disappeared, his final words echoed, icing over her heart and sending chills through her veins. "Daddy, no!" A sob caught in her throat as she rushed forward to aid her lost child, but for naught. Not even a step forward, the shadow monster rushed out of the ground, its terrifying mouth agape and screaming while its eyes glared horribly. Weeping with fear, Mirage turned and ran, tripping on an exposed root and falling hard. Shaking with tears and fear, she lay there for a moment, her eyes squeezed shut, repeating to her self. "No, it can't be, it just can't..."
