She wound her way and to the side, always searching for the next place to put her hooves down. Her progress was easier as she emptied her mind of all other thoughts except reaching the top, when she stopped justifying her continued movement. It was more difficult if she let herself think that she did not have to go forward. Any other time she might not have pushed forward this hard, not because she often quit, but because she could not have mustered the belief that it was necessary. She was urged on however by a strange, inexplicable feeling.

She was nearly at the top, already the edge was so close, so she pushed on, ignoring the pain in her ankle, using it because use it she must. For the last heave, she grabbed a branch and pulled, uncaring of the blood running down her neck and onto her chest. Right as she found her footing at the top of the bank, the branch gave way, leaving her with a piece in her mouth, vaguely familiar with its black fruit that captured her tongue and gave way with a squish that said they were overripe. They did not taste like any fruit she had ever eaten before.

They tasted like love given and spurned, of ashes, and death.

Up on the other side of the river, the furby kept its distance. It had not been a hindrance or a help, and somehow Last Night could not find it within herself to see through its eyes, to recognize its reality. It simply followed her, eyes wandering as if it could not see, except sometimes, it pinned her with such a gaze that it must understand what was happening.

She moved to continue her journey when the rustling and snorting made her stop. Then before she could react, tusks were glancing off her side. She snapped her teeth at the attacking boar, one of its tusk digging into the cheek the pike had missed. She barely scratched the boar before it pulled back for a second charge.

When the boar charged, this time she was ready. She charged as well, intent on using her antlers to end this. At the very last minute the boar pulled away and only by swinging around was Last Night able to grasp the boar with her teeth. That gave it plenty of access to her side though and when a tusk met her side, she had to let go or risk having it do fatal damage to her.

Both injured, they stared at each other warily. The boars dark liquid eyes intent on Last Night's pale ones. Last Night could too easily see and understand the low anger and rage though she did not feel it herself. She simply felt a grave sense of deliberateness, a calmness that kept her limbs still despite the pain that she was feeling.

Then, again. Charge.

This time it was Last Night who pulled away at the last minute. Though a tusk still scraped her side, she got her jaws on the boar's throat. She clamped down hard, pressing the boar in the ground. The only mercy she could offer was the swiftest death possible. When finally the boar shivered into lifelessness, Last Night let go, regarding the dead boar with finality.

All creatures must return to the Swamp one day.

Leaving the boar behind, Last Night continued her journey. Walking amongst the close knit trees, moonlight filtering through the canopy, she was reminded of the old trees that had asked to be listened to, of the buck who listened and spoke for them. She tried to listen now but heard nothing but silence. Even the cicada were quiet, nothing but her breath and her hoofsteps to keep her company. Soon, however, the cypresses began to thin out. More moonlight shone down on her as the ground softened beneath her hooves.

The wetness was like innards, the water blood, the mud the very things that held them all together. The ground sloped downward, opening up like her body had been open, flayed open to reveal the dark, hidden things that were kept inside. It was with that thought that she realized where she must be: Ghost Thistle's territory.

She did not believe that souls lingered, all must return to the Swamp, so she did not fear this place. She could not fight down that unnatural feeling that something was not quite right though. It bubbled up in her chest like blood had come to the surface of her skin to spill onto her pelt. Between one step and the next, between heartbeats, one blink:

a foal
before her
eyes half-lidded
tired or in pain or half dead

It could not be real, perhaps the blood loss was changing what she saw, but she followed it anyways. She followed its hobbling steps when all of a sudden it sank into the wet ground, jerked down as if grabbed. A small gurgling voice rose from the water as the foal disappeared, "Blood to blood."

As the foal disappeared, lights appeared. They were faint and obscured by fog and darkness. From where Last Night stood, they looked like eyes blinking and dancing away from her. They beckoned, so she followed. It was simple while many other things could were not if she so chose. She did not believe in difficulty though, only to do what she could, but never to force.

The lights seemed to be still, waiting for her, but when she got to where they must be, the blinked out of existence. She could not know if they were ever even there to start out with, for if something only existed in one person's memory did they exist at all?

When she looked again, there were figures just ahead of her. They were hidden by the fog and the mist, cloaked in darkness so that she could only just make out their forms. She was not entirely certain they were real though, and then again, reality was entirely subjective so it was easier for her to maintain the simultaneous reality and non-reality of the situation while she moved towards them. It was only when she got closer and closer that something struck her as malevolent about the figures, but by the time this thought occurred, they had disappeared.

It did not do to worry about the state of your own hallucinations until you began to believe they were reality.

The lights reappeared and this time Last Night moved faster, leg dragging and painful, but ignored. Still, they wavered and blinked before her, and while he did not believe them to be real, she also did not believe them to be unreal, she only needed to get closer to determine her reality. But again, they disappeared before she could reach them and she found herself with only the moon and the stars above blinking down at her, the moon smiling down as if it could not see her struggles.

Before she could continue to move, her body stilled with the possibility of motion, voices rose around her, distant but clearly the voices of kin. They were chanting, but she could not make out the words. Then they grew louder and louder, closer and closer, yet she did not believe in them. Drawing around her with their voices, she saw no one but she heard:

"the kill was mine, the kill was mine, the kill was mine, thief"

And she did not believe, or perhaps did not want to because if that were the reason for her death, if would be wholly unsatisfying.

The the foal, the one that had been sucked down in to the ground, reappeared before her, rising out of the swamp like one tumbles out of their sac. Released from its dark, wet death, it began to walk forward again, leading her, not speaking, though it had spoken right before its capture. And again, it was grabbed and pulled down. Right before its head disappeared, its weak voice thread its way to her saying, "What does it matter?"

And Last Night did wonder. What did it matter?

The voices came again, they were louder this time with no source in sight. Looking all around her, Last Night saw no one and for the first time she was afraid. If she could not trust her sense what could she trust? She was hearing voices with no source. And they chanted, over and over again:

"isn't that what we all want? isn't it? isn't it?"

The voices changed then, becoming higher, softer. They implored her with kind words, but they failed to hide their malice. Then another group of voices would respond. She stood still, still searching with her eyes, ears trained on the voices that seemed to rise out of the very Swamp.

Do you mind?

No. No. No.

The voices fell silent all of a sudden and when Last Night's eyes refocused to the area before her, she was confronted by a gaping mouth and huge glowing eyes, stretching open to swallow her whole. She stumbled back and away from the chasing maw, eyes narrow and unbelievable but unwilling to charge forward to confront this strange, formless terror. Her ankle caught and she fell to the side, knee scraping against the ground and when fresh blood hit the air, the glowing mouth and eyes disappeared.

Blood mingling with the low, cool smell of the mist in the air, the voices returned, low and deadly. They sounded as if they were circling even though Last Night was certain that they did not exist. Her lack of belief in their existence did not keep their voices from rising, chanting, asking, demanding of her:

do you understand?

And she could only think yes, wanted to say it, calm as the stillest lake, her thoughts like movements below the surface, two deep to be seen because even now, her limbs were still and she trusted her own mind. She had pushed away that brief flare of fear because she knew herself. She wanted to say it, to declare it.

But they had stolen her voice for their own.
