Raven couldn’t help it. She laughed at the girls’ reaction, though returned the hug, still chuckling. “Yeah. Maybe Adorable doesn’t even begin to cover it. But…you’re welcome? Thank you for the coffee.”
Raven took the paper and shook her head, her own grin rather large on her face. She tore the paper in half and scribbled her own number on the bottom part, circling it all with a heart and signing her name on it. “Here. So you have mine too. If you ever get lonely or anything, shoot me a call or text. I get lonely a lot too, so uh. It’ll be great, yeah? Time for you and me to become BFF’s, right? Raven and Gretchen?” She wiggled her eyebrows and shook her head, laughing again.
What was it about people these days? She just felt so much better about life lately. First Ruthie, now Gretchen. Was it because she had moved in with Jett? Or because she gave up her pen? Or because she just…didn’t care? She didn’t know the answer, but she knew she loved the result.

Blushing Gretchen chuckled, slipping her laptop into her bag. "Thank you, Raven." She looked at her with great intent. "But I don't want you to be lonely." She said it so gently, as if afraid it would hurt Raven somehow. She slid on her bag and typed Raven's number into her phone. With greater softness: "You should never be lonely."
Then she smiled.
"Yes please." She pulled Raven into another hug. "You're my best friend!" Not by default or anything, she really liked Raven, and Raven was the first to reach out kindly, with earnestness and vigor. Raven pushed her to become braver--to face the social situations she feared. "Maybe soon? Soon is good." She yawned. "So sleepyyy." She could have curled into a little ball on the table and passed out.
"If you ever need a place to crash." She stretched. "If home ever drives you nuts, I'll welcome you into my home." It was the least she could do for her new best friend right? "Now I must snooze."
She drifted toward the door, beaming.
"See you later, Raven."
Not goodbye. Certainly not.
She would hug her again. Soon. She hoped.
