Evan fought to keep Stormy's tension from bleeding into him as she voiced his own thoughts. He couldn't--
wouldn't--tell her how right her fears were, or that maybe she
should be scared, and that he was scared, too. He could keep being the the pillar of strength and security that he wanted and needed her to want and need him as; it was almost a relief to take up that well-worn mantle.
"That's why we've got each other's backs," he replied, forcing a grim smile for Stormy as she looked up at him. "To make sure we don't slip up."
He didn't want to think about how easily it could have been Stormy bleeding and screaming for his detached interest.
