If Isha wasn't comfortable talking about it, there wasn't much point in pressing the issue. Still... "Well, if you ever need someone to talk about whatever it is, I'm willing to listen." Emry wasn't going to say any more without knowing what the situation was. Too many people gave advice like Follow your heart or Don't forget that your family loves you without knowing whether or not it would make the situation worse. Even promising to keep a secret without knowing what the secret would be was foolish. "So...hydrangeas are like a sort of living litmus test, then? Like lichens? That's interesting," Emry resolved to study the phenomenon more when he was home. Again with the secrets. Emry knew he didn't know much about Isha, but all of these specifically secret struggles sounded....perhaps a little dire. "Hairy water lilies, huh," The older boy let the story of Isha's childhood sink in. "A year will pass before you know it. A year from now, you'll look back and think, 'Aaah! Where did the time go!' And then you will be able to pay your respects to your parents. In the meantime, though, perhaps you can set up a little spot here in the garden to come think about them. Perhaps your own, secret memorial to leave flowers until you can visit their graves in India. It doesn't have to be much. Maybe just one of these trees that you can say, 'This is where I will come and remember my birth parents, who gave me life and sacrificed their own to preserve it.'" He inspected a leaf absently. "Maybe not exactly that. And maybe it doesn't need to be a secret, entirely. Your adoptive parents might want to pay their respects too. But if you need a sort of memorial where you can sit and.... grieve....it would help to have something where you are right now. It won't be a perfect replacement to an actual grave, but it's something." Emry didn't like talking about this sort of thing. Trying to talk to someone about any sort of loss, new or old, always felt a bit cheap It didn't matter how sincere the message was nor how much or little his own experiences resembled those of the person he was talking to. There always seemed to be something lost in the telling.

"That is a wonderful thing to know, Emry. That you would be kind enough to listen to me, to my worries. Someday soon, I'll tell you, okay? And when that happens, I still hope that you'll be here to listen to me, even if I'm not the same boy anymore." Geesh, the more and more he spoke, the more grim he sounded. He hated even thinking about being the cause of bringing someone's mood down, so his tried to smile even more, an earnest smile. For the sake of his friends, and the people he loved, he'd keep smiling until the end.
"I do like that idea! But.. I think I'd rather make it somewhere not on this property. You never know how long you'll be in one single place so.. Maybe I'll buy my own little movable plant thing. Maybe like a little flower box or something, so even if I don't live here anymore, my memorial to them would still be there." He turned the camera around on himself, snapping a real quick picture of his face, hiding a cheesy, overly big grin. Isha could convince himself to be happy. This is what he wanted, all of this.
"So.. Changing the subject now. What's your favorite plant?"

Emry was having difficulty parsing what Isha was saying. Obviously the kid was troubled about something....but it was beginning to sound like he was planning to run away from home or kill someone. It didn't make sense. He couldn't let this kid be alone too often, if either of those were impending possibilities. "Would you like me to help you pick out a flower box or whatever you choose it to be?" The offer felt dumb, but it was the best he could come up with at the moment. "Hmmm....my favorite plant. There are several, I think, that are competing for that title, but one that I really like is the Japanese persimmon. One of those trees were the sole survivor at ground-zero of the Nagasaki atomic bomb blast, making it a symbol of renewal. I heard it's also pretty good for rebuilding habitats."

"Yeah, I think I would like that. I was thinking about maybe something from your shop. I really do like all the things that's there, so.. Maybe the next time you work, and you see anything interesting, you could give me a call, and I'll stop by. " The wall he had been walking on finally came to an end, forcing the boy to drop down, back to the same level as Emry was. His feet met with the soft, lush grass below, and it would still be just a little walk until they reached the woods. There was still no reason to put his shoes on.
"That kinda reminds me of.. Ginko trees. I had a poetry class a while back, and there was this one poem about a ginko, how it strives to live even in a city full of concrete. I think a few of them survived the attack on Hiroshima too. They taste pretty good, I've heard, but were poisonous if you ate too many." Finally, before them came the tall, looming trees that lead deep into the mountain, if they were to venture that far. Camera raised to his eyes, the boy snapped several pictures of the entrance, before turning around, taking a few pictures of his home as well. Finally, the turned the lens to Emry, not snapping a picture, but simply gazing at him through the lens.
"Shall we keep going?"

"Ginko trees, huh?" Emry would have to research that one later. Another tree came to mind, though it was notable for a different sort of survival. "Have you ever heard of an osage orange? It's not actually an orange." He pulled out a couple markers and made some marks in his sketchbook, trying to color-match a morning glory. "It's an interesting case because it has a rather large fruit...about the size of a softball. Almost any tree or plant with fruits that size rely on other animals to eat the fruit and pass the seeds through their digestive system in order to spread the seeds around. The only thing is.... nothing eats osage orange fruits. It's poisonous to most things. It doesn't even have any natural parasites. The only thing that will even bother with the fruit is squirrels and they just eat the seeds. Even then, it's a sort-of last resort. Some people even believe having one of the fruits in your home will keep spiders and centipedes away. Biologists believe there was a sort of large sloth that co-evolved with the tree, but it died out centuries ago. The tree managed to survive all this time, regardless. If humans hadn't been involved, it wouldn't have moved beyond its native range around Oklahoma. It was cultivated a few other places in the United States, but it's still a very rare sight because its evolutionary partner is extinct." "It's a plant that is just getting by. It isn't hurting anything but, at the same time, nothing wants anything to do with it..." He stowed his markers back in his bag at the prompt to continue moving. "Let's."

The ground beyond the gardens were not so soft, so Isha took just a moment to slip his shoes on, thinking a bit about the orange thing.
"To me.. It sounds very very sad.. Imagine being something like that, having only one purpose naturally, then suddenly finding yourself all alone. No one wants you for anything, and your forced to just sit there hoping that one day, someone will want you, love you once again." He stood up, giving Emry a long look, before smiling, heading into the woods first.
"And yet, surely someone still loves the trees, even if not for the same purpose as it was made. Everything changes after a while, and even if you're not wanted like you were before, there's got to be something there waiting for you. And who knows? Maybe in a while there will be some new development, where the trees will be needed just as much as they were before." Maybe Emry could not pick up where they were going, but Isha, on his last way through here left little marks in places the last time he came through. Branch snapped here, a little notch in a tree there, a pushed over pile of leaves ever so often. There was something he wanted to show the other, but it was a bit of a walk, and the last time he had been here, he was powered up, dashing through the trees like it was child's play.
"If you wanna take a break to sketch something, let me know, okay?" He was initially going to say 'if you're tired' but he doubted that would have gone over well, not if his friend was going to take it as if Isha suggested he was weak.

"It is sad. Incredibly sad. But at the same time, it's lucky. Many species that have an evolutionary partner are doomed once their partner becomes extinct. It's like every species is a domino lined up against another. Knock one over and others may fall over as well. But in the case of the osage orange, it stood strong, despite it's partner dying out. And you're right, someone does love the trees. Humans." Emry leaned over to pick up an acorn cap before continuing to follow Isha through the woods. "Humans love it for its wood and they love it because nothing else does. It's not a popular lumber, mind you. Not today. If it were, you'd see bright orange-yellow furniture just as often as you see teak, oak or cherry. Still, it's thanks to humans that it was able to leave Oklahoma at all." He blew some dirt out of the acorn cap and placed it in his bag. "I'll let you know if I want to take a break. Don't wait for me if you want one, though."

"Maybe then, sometimes humans aren't all that destructive, huh? Or atleast that's how I'm interpreting it as. I'm glad it's found a purpose atleast." Fall was just beginning to reach the city, and the colors in the woods were arranged in a canopy of randomness, creating a warm and mythical atmosphere. Perhaps the only sounds besides the crunching of early fallen leaves beneath their feet was the constant clicking from Isha's camera.
"I don't think I'll be tired for a while, so onwards we go! But tell me, with all of your artwork and plans for the future.. What else do you wish to do? What will happen when you graduate from university?"
Verithe I also read just now they use the orange for bug repellent too! XD

Emry nodded in agreement. "It still was a dangerous thing for humans to do, as I doubt they were concerned about invasive species at the time. Especially since nothing is going to prey on an osage orange tree. But I guess we were lucky too. It was satisfied growing where humans planted it and little else. It could have been a honeysuckle or a starling. But you're right; sometimes humans aren't all that destructive." He looked into the treetops, trying to follow the call of a scarlet cardinal. "When I graduate from university? I was thinking of being an illustrator, but I'm not sure yet. I like printmaking most, so I want to stick with that. Illustration or surface design are both pretty good for that. I've still got a couple years, though."

"Mhm.." The boy found himself a wee bit more distracted than he should have been, trying to make sure he stayed on the right path to his destination. Atleast the way back would be easier, as he had been dragging his foot slightly, parting the leaves so that the pathway back would be clear. They were nearing his destination; the smell of the forest seemed to get stronger, more damp as it wafted through the air. The quiet was broken by the sound of rushing water as well.
"Illustration? For what?" Isha couldn't quite think of what he could do with a bunch of blocks of flowers and plants, but.. if he enjoyed doing such a thing, Isha wasn't going to question it too much.
"Can you hear that?" He asked, feigning ignorance. "It sounds like water.. Do you think there's something out there?"

Emry's gaze wandered from the treetops to somewhere nebulously towards the origin of the water sounds. "For my own books, I hope. At least eventually. But I'll probably start with some publishing company or something. Maybe the only job I'll be able to find is printing T-shirts."

"From your hands to someone elses.. It's actually really cool to think about, if you were to do T-shirts. Someone on the other side of the world could be wearing something you so lovingly designed." With the push of a few branches out of the way, Isha stepped onto the shore of a small pond, with a running creek coming from between a large formation of rocks nearby.
"Well! Isn't this just grand! How about we stop here for a while? I packed some snacks and such, and it'll give you time to sketch out the scenery, if you'd like!"

"I would like that." Even with as often as Emry found himself in the wilderness, he always enjoyed being immersed in the beauty of nature. He set his bag down on a rock and, after a stretch, sat down next to it. "How about you? Do you have any plans for after high school, yet? Other than traveling?" Cooro Cooro Sorry! I meant to have Emry reply to Isha about the water and forgot!

Overlooking part of the water was a nice, large flat ledge, perfect to sit on, and thus so, Isha sat his pack down, rummaging through it. He pulled out a few sandwiches, a couple of bottles of water, and some cookies he baked himself. Well, baked with some help from the cooks in the house. He wan't the Master Chef, not in the least.
"I made turkey, ham and cucumber sandwiches. High quality stuff, it is! Only the best for my friends!" He laughed at his stupid little comments, but it was true! None of that processed meet or what not. And cucumbers were amazing, thank you very much! After handing Emry the bag tohelp himself and holding his own little meal in his hands, he walked over to the edge of the rock, ploping down so that his legs dangled over the side comfortably.
"I honestly don't know if I'll be around after high school. Then again, who ever really knows such things? I'd like to work in communications, I guess? To make sure that everyone can speak with everyone else. I have this really cool idea! It would be like.. Like a hearing aid, and when someone speaks to you in a foreign language, it's automatically translated. I guess it would pick up on the audio waves that comes from the person, and relates them to something that's recorded as that language, and then translates it to the language that you have set it at.. But I think that would be very near impossible to do." A frog croaked down some feet below him, and he leaned forward, over the edge, trying to see if he could find it.
"A teacher of mine, not too long ago, said that it was good to have a goal that may be impossible to obtain. That way, you learn to never give up, and give everything your all. Like catching a fish as big as the ocean itself. I might never reach that, but hey, It sparks determination, I think."
Verithe It's okity dokity! I just imagine him getting distracted by something interesting! biggrin

Emry took a sandwich out of the bag and munched it thoughtfully. "I've never had cucumbers on a sandwich before. They're pretty good." Emry could see them being particularly good on a hot day. He took another bite. "You don't need to be around to have plans after high school, right?" The comment made him worry that Isha might be suicidal, "Communications sounds like a good field and your idea certainly sounds ambitious." Another bite of the tasty sandwich. "For a long time, flight was thought to be impossible for humans. That didn't stop some of the greatest thinkers in history to at least dabble in tackling it. Da Vinci had plans for a flying machine, after all. It took a long time, but now airplanes and helicopters are practically indispensable to human civilization. Just don't let one 'impossible' thing blind you from the other things you can be doing as well."
