"You do that. Because I'm holding you to your word about showing me a really good time." She couldn't help but smile at his words, blushing even more when he paid her a compliment on how she appeared to him right now. But it seemed that their newfound joy was meant to be short-lived when he suddenly dropped to the ground and looked as if he was in sheer agony while he held his head between his hands. It was as if what she had most feared with regards to his head injury was about to be realized right before her.

There was no hesitancy at all on her part this time round when she whipped out her phone to dial the number to call for the paramedics, her hands as cold as ice by the time she was done before she went over to try to cradle him close to her. "The ambulance is on the way. Said that they'll be here in five minutes..." She droned monotonously, trembling slightly as she patted his back and avoided touching his face to cause him anymore pain and damage. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen. Please don't let anything happen to you..." She closed her eyes and sniffled, totally at a loss as to what she should do for now.

Darren smiled up at her, reaching up, he gently brushed the hair out of her face as he winced. "Not your fault - I dove at the ball like a dumb-a**..." he said with a dry laugh. "I'm sure it's nothing serious but... It does hurt."

The pain and died down a little bit to a dull throb now, but he was sure if he tried to do anything super strenuous it'd kick him in the teeth again, so he just lay in Hafwen's arms, grinning like an idiot.

"You know - I was hopping at some point we'd end up with my head in you lap - but I was kinda shooting for better circumstances." He smirks up at her, trying to keep up the high energy attitude so she wouldn't cry.

"But please... please don't cry for me. I did what I did because I wanted to - I lay no blame at your feet."

She felt his hand brush her hair aside, his touch gentle as was the tone with which he tried to lighten the entire situation, doing everything he could to comfort her even as he laid in her arms and obviously in pain. Darren Waughner was obviously out of his mind and Hafwen was slowly but surely starting to see for herself why.

Her eyes were still glistening with unshed tears when she looked at him. Reaching up with her hand, she dabbed at the corner of her eyes and put on a small smile for him. After all, what was this little gesture on her part compared to the efforts of the dark-haired youth who still placed her above himself even in the midst of his own physical pain and suffering. "I know. But this challenge... it was my own doing. You can't just write off my responsibility and take everything upon yourself like that." She protested weakly.

Darren still smiled at her, though to be fair it was more of a smirk now. "Your challenge I accepted. I could have walked away and given up as soon as I got smacked in the face but I didn't want to lose out on my chance..."

He watched her for a moment. "Cause you're a one of a kind girl Hafwen."

His liking of her may have started off with something silly like her hair and feigned interest - but her moxie had been the driving force since then. Maybe he was weird, but he was finding himself liking Hafwen more.

Though that might be because she was showing concern so he was right in that she liked him - even if it was only a little.

"You could have asked me to go easy on you after that. Yelled at me for coming up with something this unfair. Asked to have another go on another day..." It was strange how his response, though simple, was able to touch her in a way that brought a smile to her face. "I would have considered..." She still found it illogical as to why Darren would want to be with her after everything she had tried to discourage him in his efforts. But the boy was relentless and even for someone like her, she couldn't keep saying no after everything he had done to get her to give him a chance.

She didn't really think much into the care and concern she was showing towards him at the moment or whether she had fallen for him. Everything she did at the moment from her point of view was simply because he was hurt and it was all because of her. "... how are you feeling?"

Darren laughed and winced, no - laughing bad, bad idea right now. "I was under the assumption this was a single chance - you don't seem to be the type that offers second chances, and I can respect that."

"But glad to know I'm worth a second chance in your eyes - that actually really means a lot."

At her question of how he felt he motioned vaguely at his head. "Feels like I took an axe to my skull and it's cleaved open like a melon." He closed his eyes then. "Light hurts a little bit, but I'm not seeing double anymore. Ears are ringing on and off. You're a hell of a kicker. So that's what striker means."

He was starting to ramble now as he wanted to take a nap. "Gnnn... sleepy."

He was right about her and Hafwen found that she couldn't dispute that as the look on her face softened somewhat at the observation he had made based on her actions. She admitted to rigging the challenge so that she had a better chance of winning and getting what she wanted. But she wasn't the type to insist on continuing or kick someone while he was down and injured.

That challenge was originally intended to be a single chance for him to make or break it. There wasn't supposed to be a second chance and neither was she supposed to cradle him close right now as if they were intimately related. She cut that particular train of thought short lest it went any further than that and into unknown territory to her, frowning a little when he gave an account of the symptoms he was experiencing as a result of the concussion he had sustained.

"A striker is the one who works at the forefront of the field to put the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net. I... wasn't counting on you to try to catch the ball with your head." She could hear the sirens in the distance, her hand moving to shake his shoulder to try to help keep him awake. "No sleeping... not until you've recovered and taken me out on that first date you've worked so hard for. Alright..?" She kept her gaze focused on him, ready to prod him harder if he started to doze off yet again. It was the least she could do till the paramedics arrived to take over his care.

Darren winced when she jostled him, it made his head hurt more but he wasn't about to try and fight her. "I'm trying I'm just sleepy..." He said, his head starting to feel a bit hazy and heavy. It was hard to keep his eyes open and he just wanted to take a nap. A quick one wouldn't hurt right?

He kept blinking, trying to keep the light out of his eyes as he looked up at her. "Heh, it's hard to tell where your hair starts and the sky begins..." He smirked. "Blue... your eyes are very blue... They're pretty I like that..."

"... Like sapphires..." he yawned again, shaking his head slowly. "Soft, glowing... sapphires..."

She wasn't sure if she should laugh or cry when it seemed that he was drifting off despite her efforts at keeping him lucid with her. She couldn't remember how the nurses at the hospital did it back when she was there with her concussion and she wasn't going to try anything drastic lest she really made his condition worse than it already was. "Try harder... please."

She pleaded with him, her hand moving down to give his forearm a few squeezes to try to keep him with her still, not even realizing that she was crying for real now until she felt the tear tracks wet against her cheeks. "Good. You'd better stay awake to look at me or I'll leave you here while you're sleeping. You don't want that now do you?" It was an illogical and silly threat on her part. Of course she hadn't the heart to leave him alone right here. Not when she had no idea at all if his injury was going to put his life in any form of imminent danger.

She could only hope that the paramedics would arrive to get him to the hospital soon.

The paramedics thankfully arrived in short order. They of course separated the two, thanking Hafwen for looking after him so well until they got there. They checked his vitals, did a quick check of his eyes and determined he had a concussion. He fought with them when they tried to strap him down onto the gurney, but once they had him down he gave in, laying there staring up at the roof of the ambulance as they threw him in.

They informed Hafwen that they really couldn't let her ride with them - seeing as she wasn't next of kin or a relative, but they'd be more than happy to let her know where they were taking him, so she could see him once he was done. That was of course, until Darren started to panic, and then politely asked her to get on and do something about it - since they couldn't sedate him.

She couldn't be anymore relieved when the paramedics finally got their act together and found their way to their current location in the park, only getting up to gather her belongings and Darren's after they had taken down her account of what had transpired prior to his injury and completed their preliminary assessment to inform her that he only had a concussion and wasn't in any life threatening danger.

Reassured by the fact that he was going to be alright and soon in the care of the doctors and the nurses at the hospital who would know what best to do for him, she decided to go with their decision initially, thinking that it wouldn't be in his best interest to delay his transit to the hospital if she stood there and insisted that she be allowed to ride with them to the hospital.

No sooner had she started off to flag a taxi to get her to their intended destination, it seemed that they had to reverse their decision because of a sudden 'complication' and she frowned when she got onto the back of the ambulance and realized what said 'complication' was. She wasn't sure how best to go about helping him either so she did the only thing she could with him strapped down to the gurney like that - taking hold of his hand and giving it a squeeze as she told him in a muted voice who she was and where they were heading next. It seemed to miraculously calm him down somewhat and she never let go of his hand the entire time till they got to where they needed to eventually...
