This was what happened when you lashed out in anger or fear, she thought. Time slowed down until she could almost acutely feel the seconds pass her by, Nevada's voice muffled and far away. Acting on instinct didn't work if the natural inclination was to curl up, not if it was forced to fight instead.
< < Wrong. > > The dracolich's voice was cold and disappointed. < < This is what happens when you let fear take over. This is what happens when weaklings are given power. > >
She didn't have the time to be hurt, or to retort, or to call him out on how a charge was meant to be a partnership, not all on her. The beam of light broke through the last of the flames before she could even act, really. It pierced through her shield like a lance and burned horribly--she recognized her own scream a few seconds after the fact, and then she recognized the ground rushing towards her right before impact. Her weapon clattered distantly before it was desummoned, but Thane didn't bother howling to join her pain as well.
He simply stared her down until the world went black.

The buzzing of silence worried her. She took it as a time to prepare herself for what she had done. Her hand burned, her whole body felt like it had been licked by flames, like a nasty sunburn. It would disappear thanks to leroy.
When the haze finally disappeared, and Nevada could breathe, she looked to Stormy who was...
"Oh s**t, s**t. Stormy." The girl ran over to her best friend, catching her just before she hit the ground. Her fear shield, What had she been ******** thinking?
/That you were the stronger of the two./
No, no she didn't care about that. She didn't want to feel like she had to prove herself.
/Weren't you worried about your eye affecting your adequacy? Look you beat a hunter with both of her eyes. Doesn't that make you feel stronger?/
No it didn't. It made her regret even starting this stupid fight in the first place. As best as she could handle, she tucked her best friend into a princess style, regardless that her body burned and hurt as she did so.
"You ever let me ******** do that again Leroy, and I will find a new weapon to bond with. This was the worse...."
It didn't matter, this happened because she had been weaker. She was scared of Stormy's attack, after the girl had been scared of hers. They had reacted on fear.
And fear had gotten her friend in the infirmary.
Fear got her nothing.

Stormy remained knocked out for a while, and it was a dreamless sleep thankfully. Being that pure energy had speared through her body, the treatment didn't take as long as other serious injuries--the wound had already begun to cauterize itself was the issue, and with that torn flesh in between, it had to be reopened to allow the weapon to help heal it along.
She woke up to a searing pain somewhere between her neck and shoulder and bit her lip hard; the sedatives made her sluggish and the medicine gave her an odd taste in her mouth, but it didn't take her long to remember how she had gotten there. Shifting with a soft groan, she noticed something was off--namely, her shirt, bra, and coat, which were gathered on a chair. Bandages had been strapped from the affected area around her bust, and a little tightly too she noticed, and all she had was a patient's garb to cover it. Nevertheless Stormy immediately pulled the covers up further around her torso, suddenly very self-conscious about how she looked which, in consideration to her new wound, was probably a bit shallow in thinking.
"Nevada . . .?" She began to blearily blink her eyes, her arm pulsing with dull pain in protest to moving at all. Thane, roused with her, was aloof and removed from her.

After bringing Stormy to the infirmary, she had been pacing as they helped with the care of the girl. They did a few things to help the wounds heal faster with her weapon bond, but other than that, they said she needed time and a little more care.
She had stepped out of the hospital room, running to get the DVD player and maybe a book in case the mist girl had to stay the night again, returning with impeccable timing to catch the stirs of the girl waking up. The bag she loaded was dumped to the side as she went over to the girl, brushing back her hair.
"Hey there Stormy." She said gently, "There you are. Sorry, I meant to be here faster for when you woke but..." She looked away. "How...how do you feel?" Her eyes lowered to the energy scar she had left behind from her weapon, dread pitting in her stomach.

Medicine had a way of dilating time. She wasn't sure when exactly Nevada answered back, but it felt short enough. "Bad," she answered in a sleepy but honest tone. "I feel bad. Resources are already tight here, and now they have to use some on me . . ." Wincing, Stormy sat up a little more, lightly touching the bandages to get a feel for how far along she was healed--her skin was still very sensitive to pressure.
". . . Wait, I fainted on the field didn't I." She looked terribly put out by that fact, disappointed in her own weakness as Thane was; he had a right to be giving her the cold shoulder. "I am so, so sorry if I made you worried," she went on to say, giving Nevada an apologetic look. "I, um, I let some things get in the way, and it got bad, and I shouldn'tve used that charge anyway because the tournie doesn't allow it, and . . . S'all my fault." Stormy turned her head away from her best friend's touch, sweat sticking her bangs to her neck and forehead.

"Don't feel bad." Nevada shook her head, "I did a lot more damage than you think."
She nodded, "I carried you here, like a princess. You should be happy." She tried to smile, but it fell at Stormy's comment. "I know the tournament said no charges but we were sparring like we should, on the battlefield, we won't have a choices like that." She trembled a little as she took Stormy's hand.
"It's not your fault, I should've stopped when I got hit by your charge." She hissed remembering, "Leroy....Leroy was too strong and he shot through your shield. I hurt you really bad Stormy." She lamented.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I scarred you." She reached over to where the bandages covered the wounds. Tearing up a little, "I never meant to hurt you so bad pet."

"I did have a choice, though." And that was whether or not to let fear get in the way of a simple fight; and now, it seemed, that fear had only grown worse. She swore her ears were still ringing.
Stormy flinched even before her hands touched the bandage, and she had to take a breath to steel herself. No crying now. Instead, she took Nevada's hand and tried to offer the teary girl a smile. "But hey, I'd say you won! You'll do fine in the field, bestie~ Probably blast the competition away too come tournament time," she added, patting said hand encouragingly. "I didn't know Leroy could turn into a laser gun! That's so awesoooooome."
She said nothing of the scar, because she didn't know quite yet how she felt about it.

"I don't think you did. I should've...been more selective with my battling. And probably seen if I could borrow a single shot gun instead of a Tommy gun." She shook her head, "All these what if I did this, but it doesn't solve either of our problem."
She hated seeing the girl with the look in her eye.
She had done that damage.
To her best friend.
The first spar since her eye damage had been Ian, and the same charge had crippled her. This time, it hurt Stormy more.
She failed at this. She was failing at being a hunter.
"I hope so." She looked away, pulling herself in. This wasn't her time to self mope about how she was a failure again. She was here for Stormy. "It's his newest charge...if I don't fire it right...after he's warmed up. It explodes back onto me. That's what happened in the spar with Ian. I wasn't going to use it in the spar with you, but Leroy did it without me. I reflexively pulled the trigger after yours." And paid dearly with both recoils damaging them.
"Stormy...I hurt you really bad..." She looked to the wall, "I understand if maybe you want to take a break with me living in our room together. Because....Even your best friend left a scar on you." She closed her eye, heaving a breath. "I hope you'll forgive me with time."

Stormy took a breath. "I forgive you right now," she told Nevada, squeezing her hand to try and coax her into turning her head forwards again. "Listen. I know you didn't mean to; accidents happen, especially with the kind of charges Leroy and Thane have. That reflex is a good reflex! Means you'll act fast in battle."
Thane's scorn, however removed he was from her, filled her stomach with bile. She swallowed and tried not to feel nauseated.
"Lemme tell you something: I'm afraid of guns, sort of. Mostly the noises they make. I've been afraid longer than I've been at Deus. But you and Gale have them," she continued ear earnestly, "and you're two of the closest people to me. Not to mention we've all been in battle together before. I shouldn't have freaked out like I did, but I guess I wasn't used to all those bullets at once...Anyway, does that mean you have to hang up your coat and never use Leroy again just in case you hurt someone? No. This thing?" Stormy gestured to her bandages. "This is nothing.
"Besides, how could I kick out my best friend just because she won a spar?" She winked. "Sounds a little petty to me."

She reached out and hugged Stormy instead, sighing. "I love you so much Stormy, and I hate seeing you like this. And knowing that I was the one that put you here." She pulled back, "I hope so. I mean I hope it doesn't blow someone else's FEAR shield like it did ours."
"I thought you might be. And I was scared of scaring YOU." Nevada narrowed her eyes, "I understand overcoming fears, but maybe you should've gotten use to Gale's gun first -ahem- before asking for a battle with me." Okay now mom voice was on. "A tommy gun is one step behind being a full fledge machine gun, I know because Leroy tells me all the time." She looked down to the bandages and deflating.
"I did more than win but, I guess it means I'll be a good protector for you right? Even if I blow up things?" She crossed her leg. "How is Thane feeling about our battle?"

Stormy whimpered audibly at the hug but didn't pull away despite the sting, instead patting her back with her uninjured arm. "I thought I was used to it," she replied. "We'd been on a couple of missions where we had to fight, so . . ." She trailed away sheepishly, patting Nevada's shoulder next.
Trying not to think of machine guns.
"You'll be an awesome protector! See, you got the Sun and Moon parts down now: blowing up things that get in the way before they come and find us!" Stormy offered an encouraging smile despite her question. "Thane? Oh, he's a little sour about losing but he'll come around I'm sure. So! What did you learn from this?"
She didn't wait for Nevada to answer because she knew her best friend would rag on herself some more.
"We learned that even with one eye, you're totally rockin'~ So if you ever doubt yourself again, just remember you totally survived two different charges, mkay~?"

"Sorry Sorry. I just had to get the hug out." She pulled back as soon as she knew she wouldn't jostle her friend more and nodded. "At least you were willing to try and fight your fear though. That's a big A+ on your side and further incorporates that you are brave and I guess you can be Miz Swan, so you and Turner ended up together." She joked.
"Oh god, I much prefer being the life or death aspect. I'll sneak around any day." She shook her head. "I'm sorry Thane, next time I'll do my best to lose."
/For jacking sakes you will not. Let the other weapon mope, he;s weak./
"No what I learned that it is really hard to kill me. Even if it's myself. I must be sturbborn." She reached over and pull on Stormy's cheek. "I didn't tell you...but that is the second time the charge backfired on me, and the first time it actually hit." She sucked in a breath, "I was sparring with Ian when Leroy blew up all over me. He ruined my hand for a couple of days..." She looked away, "it's a lot harder to have control over."

She laughed softly at the mention of one Ms. Swann again, letting Nevada win for the moment. "Just gotta get that British accent down~ But don't throw any fight on my account, please; especially if we meet in the tournie. You're supposed to always do your best!"
Oh God, she hoped she'd be okay . . . If she failed there too, she hated to think what Thane would put her through.
"Being hard to kill is positive!" Stormy agreed with a smile which quickly turned sympathetic. "Well, you saw how my charge went . . . It used to be really bad for me; burns on my hands and arms and everything--that's why I like wearing long sleeves, so you can't see them. Just remember, though." The next three words she said with a pat on the hand each. "Practice makes perfect~ Work with Leroy some and you guys'll be unstoppable!.
"So!" Stormy tilted her head. "Ian is who . . . ? You've mentioned him a few times already."

"Of course not, we won't have charges, it'll be less stressful and more rewarding to beat the crap out of you." She teased, "Or vice versa."
"Sure, It really is." She laughed, "I guess being resilient is good. So long as I don't get a superman complex. Can't be invincible forever." She blinked, looking down at the pats on her hands and giggling a little.
Look at little miss school teacher Stormy.
"Ian is a friend." She smiled at Stormy, "A very handsome friend." She continued to smile. She loved her best friend, but unless Ian came out to everyone, she would keep his secret safe with inside her. "About as lazy as I am I think, mysterious. Gorgeous green eyes and dark skin. Arabic I think but comes from Canada. He's a mist like us. A friend." She nodded, "Nothing more though."

"You're not allowed to get a complex. I had to talk Gale out of his, and I still don't think I actually won." So Nevada received an I'm watching you look to get the point across.
At least she didn't have to go spy on Ian like she had Dylon; this time, at least, Stormy would trust her judgment. But if he made like one move, she swore it'd be spy time . . .
"Oh, a mist, right! I remember him from the cruise ship I think?" She tilted her head in thought. "With Dory-an . . . yeah. They came around the same time. Well, I'll have to meet him soon! Gotta keep up the mist team spirit!" she cheered with a fist pump. Of the wrong arm. Owwwww. "For now, though, you don't have to stay; it's boring in here, so booooooring. I'll text--I'll come find you in our room later."
Sigh no technology sucked.
