Faroth hesitated, Celestia's voice stopping him before the sudden burst of light at the edge of his vision. In a way, he sort of wished she'd just let him go, now that he'd said his peace, but apparently that wasn't enough. With a sigh, he backed out of the tunnel's entrance to see what she wanted to say to him.

But the light wasn't coming from her this time. And it seemed someone else wanted to speak to him instead. His eyes widened, staring in mild disbelief at the hovering, speaking ball of light that hung between them. Her Mellon? He wasn't used to speaking to other's Mellons often. Heck, his own Mellon was rather quiet and didn't talk much, not even to him. Faroth had more conversations with Raina than his own Mellon, it seemed. Was that normal?

Still somewhat in shock, he blinked a few times, then responded automatically, "Err...a pleasure, Clairvoyance." Okay, he couldn't exactly offer to shake her hand...or...anything. He settled for what he hoped was a polite response, bowing his head in greeting for a moment.

The Mellon's words were swift and curt, but Faroth was having some trouble following. He cast a momentary, curious glance towards Celestia, then back to the ball of light. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure I follow. What do you mean...'seeing death?'" He frowned, unsure whether he should be simply confused or concerned. What did that mean? The princess had already proven powerful in this land, even if less so than she was in her own. But, what other powers could she possess besides the ability to summon light where there was none? Could she...possibly have some sort of abilities like the Faun's own Seer? He had heard mention that she'd taken part in the power's ceremony to swear fealty to the Tree. Could she have been granted some dark powers of the spirit realm? Something that allowed her to see things that others could not? Things...possibly yet to come?

He tried to smile, as if joking, but the expression didn't quite reach his eyes. "Just wondering if uh...I should be concerned perhaps?" Somehow, it didn't sound like a good indication of one's future when another only saw 'death' when looking at you. Not reassuring.

A cackle filled the room as the light moved to the other side of his head. "Concern? Not immediately, I suppose, though it will remain a hindrance like this," a pause before she began listing irritating things Celestia would continue to do in this state. "Enhanced startle response, hypersensitive senses, distracting thoughts, avoidance of stimuli, visual hallucinations... Need I continue...~?"

The princess, at this point, was clearly being put in a worse and worse mood. "That is quite enough," she snapped, not particularly grateful for her cover to be blown. After a moment, her eyes averted away, ashamed at how poorly she was behaving.

The mellon seemed to be pleased from her growing quiet, almost as if Celestia had become but a court fool for her to enjoy. "Care to inform the lad with the specifics of the immediate problem at hand? Or shall I have the honor?" Her tone was surely cheerful.

She was far less so, and as she spoke in mumbled tones, she brought her knees to her chest. "When I look at faun... or blood pae... They look as if they've been gravely injured in battle..."

"Now, now, princess... You must speak up if we are to hear you? Mumbling is quite rude, as you should be aware."

A bit louder, she repeated. "When I look at faun... or blood pae... They look as if they've been gravely injured in battle..." a small pause before she explained a bit more in detail. "It matters not if it is but a wing, an arm, a face... All that remains is horror..." Just speaking on it, admitting it, was enough of a mental toll that her whole body seemed to shake, as well as her voice, and she had to bite her lips to not cry out of embarrassment. "That is why my eyes avoid you..."

Why was her mellon always so cruel?

"I suppose that is enough for the moment..." she sighed, returning between them, but unable to return the princess's eyes to her light. "I shan't force you to continue speaking, Celestia, but be aware that your issue runs far deeper than simply your mind's tricks." To Faroth, "I hope, Miseur, some of this nonsense she caused has been cleared up. With any luck, I will not be needed for such a situation again. A lady such as I should not need to care for someone so incompetent. You have my blessing to set her straight if she again falls out of line." That would make her life easier anyways.

"Alas, I have better things to attend to, so I shall take my leave. Until next we speak, if again we speak, Faroth," the light hummed as it faded into the darkness.

In but a moment, as quickly as it had came, it was gone, and the room returned to how it had been, save for the sounds of Celestia's quickened breathing.

Faroth was a bit confused by the Mellon's reply before realizing that his question had been misinterpreted. He would have corrected the assumption, except that he realized his own concerns were answered by her answer anyway, as the first misunderstanding had been his own.

In a way, he felt guilty at how relieved he felt to understand that this was neither a particular reaction to him specifically because of something he might have done...nor that he was the victim of some sort of future-seeing vision involving his horrible demise. And yet, maybe it would have been better for Celestia if it was, from the sound of it. If this was something she'd been dealing with on her own for a while now, not just something cued by Faroth's presence...

Having exposed her bonded Pae'il's secret, the Mellon was quick to depart. Faroth frowned, not sure if he approved of the method the companion had used in dealing with the situation, even if it had gotten the job done. Not the nicest way, he thought. Still, he supposed she had done so for his own understanding, and so kept his own response curt, if polite. "Until then," he nodded to the vanishing light.

The pair was left once more in silence, only the small lantern casting its glow between them. She couldn't look at him, but he shouldn't have had issue looking at her. However, seeing her huddled over, hugging her knees to her chest, looking as if she were about to fall apart in response to the conversation tugged at his heartstrings. And he was pretty sure that the shaking he saw wasn't from any wavering light trick of the lantern.

Sighing softly, he rose, the entrance to the tunnel forgotten. "I won't pretend to understand any of this...and if you don't want to talk about it, I understand." He was still relieved it wasn't just him, but that much settled, he wasn't sure how the hell he was supposed to help either. But, he had to do something. He kept talking as he moved so she could hear him even when he left the circle of light, and when he wasn't talking, he made sure his hoofsteps continued to tap, perhaps a bit louder than normal, against the stone floor. He had no intentions of startling her if he could help it.

At least Clairvoyance's interference may have helped clear up a few misunderstandings.

He started rustling about in the backpack they'd left by the stone table, continuing to explain, "I just...if there's something I can do to make this easier, let me know, okay? I have...no idea how to help, honestly. Way beyond my experience. But, I mean, it's looking like we're stuck together for a while, so anything to make this easier..." He found what he was looking for and his hooves tapped along the stone floor back in Celestia's direction.

Standing in her peripheral vision, just inside the light, he shook out the blanket from his pack, straightening it out. Feeling that she'd seen the action and would put together what he was doing so that she wouldn't be startled, he moved back behind her again, gently draping the blanket over her wings and around her shoulders. Having made as little contact as possible, he backed away when finished, moving around to her side again. There, where she'd know where he was, without having to look directly at him, he sat down and stared forwards at the little lantern's light. Funny how understanding a bit more about why, if not nearly all, helped give him some clue what he should and should not be doing.

"I take it this is something new?" he prompted. Afterall, if this were something she'd always done, then...well, what person could stay sane when bombarded by horrible images all the time? Besides, she seemed so different now than when she'd first come to Telrunya. A completely different person, now that he thought about it. Why hadn't he realized it sooner?

So what had happened between then and now?

Like this, Celestia just set, her body unable to relax, her vision unable to focus, her mind racing. Even if it was for her own good, as Clairvoyance always insisted her interventions were, that was no excuse for acting so harshly each time. Even the aristocracy, as she seemed to act as she was, needed to show compassion to the peasantry below them, less risk rebellion and their own demise. Was resisting a mellon even possible?

Faroth's words played as background noise in her mind, unable to present themselves clear enough to really capture her focus. Drained of any energy to argue or think about what they meant, she simply nodded, her breath slowly escaping her lips as her eyes grew heavy.

What... What was this feeling?

Her irises moved to look at his shadow, her ears twitching slightly as she took notice of his steps. It was as if this conversation had taken the energy from her will. How... How long had it been since she had been allowed a true rest? Each night she seemed to be plagued by these thoughts, seeping into her sleep, without an outlet with which to rid herself of them.

Turning her head in Faroth's direction, she nodded lightly. "Yes... For some... months... now...," Her words were becoming softer and softer as she spoke. Everything was blurry, and it was harder to remain awake.

Celestia hadn't been aware just how physically taxing hiding this had become as well.

Wasn't aware until she had someone else who was knew. Had Clairvoyance known this would happen?

Loosing the will to fight the sensation any longer, her eyes closed and her body fell to rest upon his. For the first time in her present memory, sleep came quickly, her breath coming in very soft, slow exhales, her silken hair falling to the side of her and her arms falling limply beside her.

Her answer was soft, and he flicked an ear towards her to hear better. Wait...had she just said...months? By the Earth...how...?

Before Faroth could absorb this shock, he received another one. He hadn't even a chance to reply when the princess fell limply against his shoulder. His eyes widened and reflexively, he moved to catch her. Had she fainted? Was she sick? No, it only took a moment to look in the lantern's soft glow and see the first peaceful expression he'd seen on her face since they'd awoken. Releasing a held breath in relief, Faroth relaxed as well, one arm around the sleeping princess.

Well...now what?

He swallowed hard, only now taking a moment to consider the situation. They were separated from the others, basically lost with no idea where they were, or how to get out of this place for sure, and apparently the princess had been hallucinating for months. Wonderful. Oh, and now she was sleeping on his shoulder.

Pausing, he looked down at her with a mix of pity and sympathy. The poor thing. Faroth couldn't imagine what she'd been going through, seeing horrible things that weren't really there...and yet, never telling anyone but her own Mellon. As dire as their situation might be, he hadn't the heart to wake her now that she looked so peaceful.

Though, on a second analysis, perhaps their situation wasn't so bad, at least for the moment. Not that he was saying this was fine, just...they had a place to stay for the moment, no active signs of danger. It couldn't hurt to stay here a bit longer before moving on, especially when they had no idea how long they might have been here already. Other than some cobwebs and a few bugs, well...it didn't seem a dangerous place to rest.

Though, if they were going to stay for a while. Softly, testing to see if she were as asleep as she seemed, Faroth muttered her name while leaning to look at her face. "Celestia?" When there was no response, he judged there'd be no harm in moving just a bit without waking her. Hopefully. Still, he kept his movements slow and controlled, leaving her head on his shoulder while working his arm around her lower back. He shifted onto his knees, then hooked his other arm beneath her knees. He rose very slowly, the princess cradled in his arms, then headed towards what seemed to be a semi-clear spot on the wall near the lantern.

If he was going to let her sleep, he was going to watch over her, and they could at least be a bit more comfortable while he did so.

With the same slow, careful movements, he sank to the floor with the wall at his back, Celestia in his lap. He tried not to jar her too much, shifting just enough to get semi-comfortable, the soft-furred female still resting against his chest. He re-adjusted the blanket around her shoulders, now draped over them both, in an automatic fashion, his mind whirling, trying to figure out what to do next. No, for now, he'd let her sleep. That's what he'd do next. And what came after that? Well, he'd figure that out later. As he always did.

While it wasn't very long, no more than a 15 or 20 minute nap, it felt as if she slept for an eternity as her head moved, signalling her awakening. Her eyes, half opened as she yawned, blinked slowly.

Where... was she...? Her mind was in that haze so often felt upon awakening, unable to comprehend the darkness, but aware of the warmth she felt. It was very comforting, very soft, and she smiled as she pressed her cheek and arms against it.

Then the realization came. Her eyes widened and her cheeks flushed as she leaned back. How on earth had she managed to fall asleep in such a situation?! How had she managed to fall asleep on him?! Wings flaring out, knocking the blanket behind her she pushed herself back, eyes flicking down and away from him. Awkwardly and quickly she stood up, stammering, "S-sorry! I had n-no intention of...," as she tried to take some steps back.

Her hoof, however, caught on the fallen blanket, causing her to loose her balance and fall back over onto her back. The cold floor was more of a shock than a serious cause for injury, yet she still reflexively pulled her body in a fetal position, softly whining, "Ouch...."

It took a few moments before she moved to sit up, her cheeks dyed a deep red in her embarrassment. "Sorry..." She muttered, bringing her arms to rest in her lap.

Faroth had let his head drop back against the wall, not asleep, but in an unknown situation such as this, simply conserving energy. As tired as she'd seemed, he thought that Celestia might sleep for some time, and had let himself relax in kind.

When she began to stir, he blinked, glancing down. Had he accidentally woken her? He hadn't meant to. For some reason, it hadn't occurred to him just what this situation looked like...until Celestia scrambled backwards looking embarrassed. Why had...oh.

His own cheeks flushed, leaving Faroth at a loss what to say at first. When Celestia fell, however, he scrambled to his hooves on reflex. "Whoa! Careful!" A little late, he supposed, for a warning. He hurried to her side, careful to stay out of her direct line of sight. Resting a hand on her shoulder as she sat up, he asked, "Hey, you alright?" He frowned, not sure if this was the best time for humor, but...needing to lighten the mood a bit, quipped, "You know, it was okay. No need to hurt yourself. I don't mind; just didn't think I'd be that comfortable of a pillow."

Pouting, the princess turned her head away from him and spoke in an irritated tone, "If my intent had been self-injury, surely you would not be making humor of my pain." There was a moments pause before she shook her head, unable to continue with these actions as a soft smile broke upon her lips. "Comfortable enough, though I imagine I would feel the same. I suppose." What did it feel like to have someone else sleep on you?

Celestia was unable to continue these thoughts as a rumbling echoed in the room. If it wasn't for the feeling in her stomach, she might have been concerned, as it were, however, she merely held her head a bit lower.

Why was everything at this moment screwing with her?

Speaking in a mumble, her cheeks flushed again and her body rocking in it's spot, she asked, "Could I... possibly... have something to eat from the pack...?" It didn't appear there would be any other food around.

"Heh, sorry," Faroth apologized, rubbing his neck sheepishly. At least she didn't seem too angry, despite the statement. He chuckled as her expression cracked as well. "Really? Well, uh...I'll...keep that in mind?" he wasn't sure how to take that comment actually, and instead, he flushed again slightly.

The change of subject was a welcome distraction, and he cleared his throat, looking back towards their things. "Yeah, of course. Let me see what we've got." He patted her shoulder lightly, then headed over to their things. Honestly, having no idea how long they'd been here, judging by his own growing hunger level, it had been a few hours at least, he'd say. The pack didn't yield much in the way of food. There was a bit of jerky and some trail mix, as well as the dried meals prepared by the fairies, but they'd need some water first for those. The basket held a few things that might be more readily edible, however.. Granted, he'd picked most things with the idea of taking seeds and cuttings in order to grow more, so there wasn't a lot there. They had a few bananas, however...though, those wouldn't last long between them. They'd have to find some other kind of food if they ended up here for very long.

"Maybe, if we find some water somewhere, we can have something a little more substantial, but for now," he shrugged, crossing the room with a couple of the yellow fruits in hand. He offered one to the princess, sitting alongside with his own. "Hope you like bananas?" he chuckled.

This situation was a lot nicer now that he was taking her... could she refer to it as a disability at this point, or was that taking it too far? Her problem was probably more correct. Either way, call it what you will, Faroth knowing about how to avoid acting as a trigger had calmed them both. If not for that, it is unlikely they would be here now, speaking as they did.

All she remembered was that she had grabbed some edibles, but most of it seemed to require cooking to properly use. The only thing she remembered having ready to eat was...

"Bananas?" she looked down to it, laughing lightly as she took it from him, "Yes, that would be nice." The princess took to carefully peeling it to reveal the flesh, hardly pausing before taking a bite. Man, was that satisfying! If only in the moment, as it was gone far too soon. "If memory serves me, there is little food, correct?" She wasn't interested in hearing anything dreary or implying that they might starve, only in confirming the situation.

Tossing the skin beside her, she again stretched her arms above her head before moving to stand up. "I suppose we should return to searching this place, if we are to find a source of water or nourishment."

She waited to hear him move before returning to the hole. "I will go first for..." she paused, looking away sheepishly, "...obvious reasons of circumstance." Again, she paused for him before crouching down, her wings folded tightly to her back, and crawled inside of the hole.

((Sorry this took so long, I meant to do it sooner before you both got too far along.))

The slab of rock in the center of the room is smooth. Smooth enough it should be noted to be odd, because stone does not naturally come that smooth. Even polishing stone does not make it that smooth and flat.

The faeries depicted on the support stone were delicately carved in a scene in which they are celebrating; dancing and drinking around a large stone. There is also an incantation written in the original language of the Pae'il.

---

At the end of the tunnel Faroth and Princess Celestia had attempted to crawl down is room with a resident. The lights and the chattering were enough to stir the creature. In the shadows, remaining in the dark, hundreds of tiny little feet march towards the disturbance at the command of their mother.

Just outside the dimmest rim of light surrounding the pair of Faun, the room was filling with spiders. They would not see them unless the light moved, or Celestia used her power to light more of the room.

Out of the tunnel, the little spider's mother slowly crept. She wasn't an exceptionally giant spider like in the movies, but she was large. She would come to a Pae's hip if comparing size. The tunnel was the perfect size for her.

It may not have been much, but any food on an empty stomach always seemed to taste so much more luxurious than it really was. The fruit was quickly gone, and Faroth turned to answer the question. "Not a lot, no," he acknowledged with a light shrug. "Though, if we find some water, we'll be a bit better off. There's some of those pre-made meals from the fairies we can make then. That plus the trail mix and jerky, I figure we've got maybe a week or so's worth of food each." They wouldn't be eating any grand feasts or anything, but, they wouldn't starve. Still, another food source, if they could find it, would be welcome. Besides, Faroth wasn't sure how willing he'd be to try the jerky, personally...he'd always been a vegetarian all his life.

Well, even if they ended up eating the fruits they'd picked, he could still save the seeds for Takeko. And surely they couldn't stay down here, wherever
'here' was, for more than a week. There were three different paths out of here, and one of them had to lead back to the outside. From there, it was just a simple matter of getting their bearings, then either looking for signs of the others, or making their own way back towards the Tree with the hope that the others would have done the same.

He stifled the part of his brain that kept bringing up the fact that if they didn't find some source of fresh water first, they wouldn't have to worry about only having a week's worth of food.

He returned the collection of seeds to the basket, then paused before leaving. He also put away the blanket, folded neatly into the bag once more, then after a moment's hesitation, set both the pack and basket up on the smooth, stone slab. For whatever purpose the stone had served once, it was going to keep their stuff safe and easily reachable for now. He marveled in passing at the smoothness of the surface of the rock, then shook it off to get moving again. Hopefully, this tunnel would lead them out somewhere. If so, he could return quickly to grab their things before they progressed further.

"Ready?" he asked, reaching to pick up the lantern. Before he could offer to take the lead as before, Celestia beat him to it. Of course, understanding her issue now cut short any arguments he could think to offer. He didn't really like it, thoughts passing of trouble in the tunnels themselves, or what if it was blocked up ahead, or...no matter. "Alright, just...be careful," he offered needlessly.

He took the lantern if she wasn't going to use it, thinking maybe she planned to lead with her own light. As he turned towards the tunnel to follow her though, a movement out of the corner of his eye gave him pause. He froze, slowly lifting the lantern to try and get a better look. "Celestia?" His whisper was soft, but sharp; an attempt to get her attention before she went any further, but hopefully not alarm anything else that may or may not be around. "Did you...see something?"

Only a short post from me, cause I figure Celestia might need to respond to the prompt first...since they have little eight-leggers coming their way down the tunnel... XD...err...and one big one... >.>

Light wasn't one of her primary concerns at the moment, as it likely should have been. All that the princess needed was to get out of this temple, to escape as quickly and efficiently as possible. Her wings brushing the sides of the tunnel, her limbs the bottom. Methodically she moved herself forward: reaching out, and pulling.

At least, until something else brushed against her.

Blinking, pausing, she put her hand out to light the tunnel. Her eyes widened as she saw hundreds of black spots running from its edges and away from her into a gap to the front, what appeared to be another cave. It wasn't that she was afraid of spiders, rather that the sheer number of them had been surprising. Calling to Faroth, she answered, "It appears to be some number of spiders," before continuing forward.

As she reached the opening and moved out, her mouth went agape, taking in the covered walls and the very large one before her. "Is... this real...?" the princess asked, wanting to know if her mind was tricking her.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 16, 2013 2:32 pm

Faroth had hesitated before following Celestia into the tunnel, but if she were going forward, he wasn't going to let her go alone. He gave her a moment to proceed before following with the lantern. Belatedly, he realized the new awkwardness of the situation, quickly averting his eyes away from the silken rainbow-hued tail and straight to the floor in front of him.

Oy, Faroth, how do you get yourself in these situations?

Then, the first spider skittered by.

Faroth looked up again, lifting the lantern to light the tunnel, but the way the shadows kept playing about, he couldn't tell if all the movement wasn't just a trick of the light. Celestia didn't sound alarmed when she answered him, at least, not overly, so perhaps that's all it was; a spider or two. It wouldn't be surprising in an old place like this, not by far. And the tunnel certainly wouldn't be the place to panic over a little arachnid. Faroth calmed his antsy nerves, dropping the lantern and his eyes to the floor again as Celestia lit the path ahead of her. If the princess wasn't upset, he certainly didn't need to worry over a little spider. Okay, not a problem.

The first spider that Faroth had seen proved only the first of many.

More and more of the little black spiders passed by him, in ever increasing numbers. What sort of number were they dealing with, if it was 'some number of spiders?' When Celestia exited the tunnel and stood, Faroth wasn't far behind, wondering why she hadn't elaborated further.

Apparently, 'some' number was a large one. Faroth's lantern revealed the walls themselves practically crawling with the dark arachnids, as well as the ceiling and most of the floor. He was suddenly quite wary of where he put his hooves, trying his best not to squish any of the creatures if he could help it. Despite the urge to do otherwise. Unsure of just why, Faroth had an inkling that perhaps going mad and trying to stomp the creatures might not be the best idea. They were hopelessly outnumbered, size difference or no. Thousands to one, easily.

His gaze traveled upwards and he found a good possible sign that his instincts may have been right. Eyes widening at the sight of the massive arachnid, he muttered softly in disbelief, "That...is a really, really big spider." Gulping silently, wrestling with the sudden urge to bolt back into the confined tunnel, Faroth realized Celestia was speaking again. Reaching for her arm to help fix his presence and location in her mind, he answered, "I'm seeing it too, if that's what you're asking. I'm not sure I want to say whether or not this is real though..."

The princess's eyes seemed to be captivated, yet never still as they darted from the motion of one part to the motion of another. There were just so many of them, how could they all fit into such a relatively small space, she wondered. Why was there one, however, that was far larger than the others? Was it their leader of sorts, or perhaps a guardian?

A sigh escaped her lips as she felt Faroth's hand on her skin and reflexively flinched, if only a little; the princess had not been aware that she had been holding her breath until then. She took a step closer to him, eyes continuing to be locked forward, relieved to not be seeing things.

If for a moment.

Now she had to be concerned by the fact that there actually were thousands of little spiders and one huge one in this room they had just crawled through a hole to get to. "Perhaps... it is friendly...?" Her tone wasn't convincing as she spoke, but it worked to keep her nerves calm.
