Robert was learning more with each interaction he had with Mimsy. It was almost like his computer game, where he'd make a mistake, and the frowny faces told him to go back and try again. This time, he learned to pay attention when Mimsy pulled away, noting how uncomfortable touch was. How in the hell had he..

He pushed that errant thought away and tried to follow her sentences, losing track of what she was trying to say easily and often. His expressions morphed and changed with each loss, and returned to focus as soon as he caught the thread of her meaning again.

Until she mentioned character sheets.

His entire body tensed in realization that he really had just sat here talking about all of that stuff with her. Just as she couldn't accept certain things, Robert couldn't accept the idea of people knowing he was aware of certain.. less than cool activities. Even though it was obvious Mimsy thought highly of the game..

He couldn't admit things to himself, sometimes. He couldn't accept that they were there, lurking just beneath the surface of the tough guy. He almost pulled away, but her hands had curled around his, keeping him from getting away. He pursed his lips and slumped in dismay; and her admission just wasn't enough to break through that stubborn denial.

"I ain't no dungeon.. nothin'. Psht. No. That's.." His cheeks bloomed erratically with patches of color. "Do I look like that kinda guy to you?"

There was not a time in Mimsy's recent memory that he appeared to be caught off his guard, and panic slowly set in as she assumed that he might have been thinking about something that she didn't want him to think about, or he'd remembered something she was trying to keep his mind away from, or--

Oh. This had a simple solution.

"You're not? My apologies. I did not intend to trivialize your position as my scribe. On the subject of your appearance, however..."

She leaned close enough to lightly kiss his cheek, lips twitching into a smile against his skin before she sat back. Her hands began to shake again, so she clutched his more tightly, a hopeful plea that she'd look like she knew what she was doing.

"I am of the opinion that you look like Robert, and that you can be any 'kinda' guy that you would like to be. A prince, a scribe, and a dungeon master are all absolutely within your capability."

What was she saying.

Thankfully, she thought to stop herself before she began listing a variety of other occupational types, which would have included things like 'astrophysicist, molecular biologist, astronaut', and...well.

Just when he thought he'd figured her out, Robert realized he was twice as lost with Mimsy as he'd been the day before. She leaned up towards him of her own free will, and pressed her lips against his skin without hesitation. She didn't even look disgusted when she pulled away, and a voice inside of his head started to warn him of something. Something he had way too much experience with.

That voice told him that if he could handle her, Mimsy would be a piece of cake. But Jezebel was never the voice of reason in any situation, so it was difficult to let her ease him.

He felt those shaking hands, and looked down at them, so frail and tight as they tried to hold his own. But his hands were too big, and he pulled them apart, forcing them to switch places by engulfing her hands inside of his. Suddenly, all that shaking and frailty disappeared under his embrace.

Those words were too sweet to bear, and he ducked his head, chuckling in defeat. He wasn't going to argue the point anymore; not after hearing something like that. This did not deter him from his initial worry, however, so when his chuckles faded, he lifted his head to look at her. His expression was captivated with curiosity.

Mimsy wasn't the only one experimenting.

"That wasn't easy for you, was it." He murmured carefully, flickering his gaze from her eyes, to her lips, and back again. "But you did it anyway." He didn't have to clarify. His expression said it all.

When she felt his hands move, Mimsy could only stare - she was certain that he was going to pull away, to get up and leave, and that this had been the line she was not supposed to cross. It was only a matter of time, but she hadn't expected it to be so soon.

But he put his hands over hers instead, and she watched with a puzzled frown as they covered her pale fingers. What did that mean? She wanted to pull her hands away and put them on top again, but it didn't feel terrible, so...if this was what he needed, it was feasible to deal with it.

His question posed a greater difficulty. That was information that should not be shared, safely guarded, but she could not neglect to notice that such things were becoming more and more obvious.

"No," she relented, clasping her hands beneath his. "It was not. I am attempting to learn to be capable of doing what I would like to do, regardless of its simplicity."

She smiled a crooked smile.

"I have quite a bit of gained experience to attribute to someone in another timeline. Another world, perhaps." Her eyes watched his carefully, interested in finding any signs of recognition, any flicker of familiarity. Before now, there were only short mentions that gave her any indication that he remembered, but none were enough. Not yet, at least.

Robert did not like being lied to. But he was starting to get used to it. When she tried to explain away her reactions, he nodded carefully, listened, and then dismissed the claim entirely. But the mention of another world was clear enough to prove some things true, and he lowered his head, a helpless smile sneaking up on his face.

"I'll give you that one." He muttered under his breath. "Though, I'm gonna say something that you probably wouldn't expect, and I hope it doesn't offend you."

He decided to call her out on her bluff, because sometimes, even he was terrible. But he knew he was right about how hard certain types of affection were for her, so he stood up, let her hands go, walked around the crate, and wrapped his arms around her from behind. His hug was a great, overwhelming thing, kept loose enough to let her breathe while still showing her something about what he considered comfortable existence. If he could, his arms would always be hugging someone. But right now, they chose to hug her.

He really did expect her to turn to stone in his arms.

"I like Mimsy a lot more than Simmy." The revelation surprised even him. "For like, a hundred different reasons that I won't sit here and get into right now. But most of all, it's because she's real. You're real. And I'd choose that every time." His lips thinned to hold in a laugh. "Even if it does mean you probably want me to shove the hell off right now."

"Offend me?" Mimsy cautiously asked, and any further questions were caught in her throat when he released her hands and walked away from her. s**t. She'd ruined it. She knew she had--

But he hadn't walked away at all. His arms were around her, and she did not turn to stone, because she was in close proximity to Robert, not an Insanity monster; but her shoulders did tighten, and she did stare blankly at nothing, in spite of her lack of molecular change. There was a small shift of movement when he began to speak again, something nervous, then relieved. How could she have been offended by that? Offended at his preference of calculated brilliance over wanton stupidity?

"I understand." She slowly exhaled and reminded herself to breathe. "More than my cousin, as well?"

He 'loved that b***h', after all, and like and love and everything in between was surely quantifiable in varied amounts on a scale from least to greatest. One of them would be above the other, and this was always going to be a competition.

Though she had still not quite relaxed into the hug, she made no indication that she planned on shoving him or leaving. That had the potential to change depending on his answer, of course.

Robert paused in absolute confusion when she asked him if he liked her more than her cousin. This was because no matter how close Robert had been with both Clerise, and Mimsy, he hadn't actually known they were related. So a number of options went through his mind - all of which weren't Clerise.

Who was related to Mimsy? She hung out the most with Lucky, and she was always with Checkov too. If he had to guess, he'd definitely say Checkov was related to her - the two of them were like peas in a pod sometimes, even acting the same when you thought about it. But why would Mimsy have to ask if he liked her more than Checkov? It didn't add up, so he tried again.

There were many girls on the island that he cared deeply for. Madison and Eva came to mind almost immediately, since Petra was off the table - he knew Petra's family as well as he knew his own. Was she related to one of them?

He took too long thinking about it, until a very sad, twisted little thought dug into his soul. He hoped she wasn't related to Clarice - he wouldn't be able to answer the question.

"Who's your cousin?" He finally asked, after he gave up trying to figure it out himself. "I didn't even know you were related to anybody out here."

An errant thought had him thinking about the one person who looked like Mimsy, and he cringed, trying not to laugh. If Mimsy was asking him if he loved her more than Cael, the answer was yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

How did he not know? Mimsy finally moved, twisting to look up at him with a look of childish wonder. There was actually someone who didn't know about the childhood feuds and the release and destruction of her spiders and the lifetime of rivalry. At least not in its entirety, if he didn't know who she referred to.

"Clerise," she said, astounded that there was somehow still someone who didn't know. It wasn't as if they had kept it secret, and both of them had been loud and adamant about denouncing their status as relatives - especially when Caelius became involved in the equation.

Her eyes had been busily scanning his face, as if it might help her understand what the ********>, but they stopped when she hit the need to clarify.

"With an 's'." Leave it to Clerise to complicate situations posthumously. She should have expected as much, considering how she had already complicated this one by simply existing here before Mimsy's arrival.

"There is only one other relative of mine that I know of on this island. I have learned that I share some sort of ancestry with Caelius, but I was referring to Clerise. She was not particularly pleased when she discovered that I created a link that connected our bloodlines, making Caelius her cousin, too." She smiled wryly. "He did not value his connection to her as his cousin either, if the circumstances of her death were any indication."

Robert leaned back when she twisted, to give her enough room. But when she said the only word he'd been dreading, he looked like his heart had just been stomped on by a chemical-covered boot. She didn't allow him to suffer for long, as the clarification made him sigh long and hard with relief.

But then she had to go and tell him the grossest news of all.

"You're." He saw it now, just as he'd seen it a moment ago, and cringed with horror. "You're related to. Caelius?"

His stomach flopped, rolled over, and then died.

"Okay. Uhm. O.. kay. All right." He needed time to process the information - and possibly bleach his mind free of it. In the meantime, he focused on the question at hand - which had nothing to do with Caelius. "Well if you meant Clerise, of course I like you more than I did her. She was pretty awesome, but I don't even think she liked me very much. And I certainly wouldn't be like this - I mean not that this is - well it sort of is but it's not - I mean the point is - ugh. Caelius? Really?"

Apparently he hadn't gotten over that.

A month ago, Mimsy might have wondered what was so bad about Caelius that news of her relation to him continued to elicit this response, over and over and over again.

Now she knew: he tried to steal everything important for himself.

The confirmation that she was higher on that scale than Clerise had been - or was currently, at least - earned a genuine smile. It grew a little strained when he called the most disgusting person she'd ever known 'awesome', but still remained.

"No," she quietly countered, her fingertips gently brushing his cheek. "She wasn't."

Then the smile was gone, replaced by neutrality once more.

"I never viewed the information myself. I have no desire to determine how closely related we are, and it was Clerise that claimed he and I were cousins, so the verity is questionable. We did not grow up together, and it is not as if we are siblings. I would have paid little attention to this fact, had it not troubled Clerise so much."

"Is that the point?" Her thumb traced his jaw, and came to rest just below his ear. "We have no choice on our preference of family. I choose my connections both carefully and sparingly, and opt only for those that I want most. That is why...well. This."

She still didn't know what 'this' meant, and hoped that being vague could carry her along until she manged to figure that much out.

The topic was actually pretty important, and he might have even tried to fight for the idea that Clerise was awesome, and Caelius was a horrible person to be related to, if he could. But he might have said anything, if he could. Unfortunately, his brain came to an explosive halt, and everything Mimsy said went right over his head.

Mimsy didn't have problems touching people. He'd been wrong before - or, no, maybe it just mattered who the person was. All he knew was that she was having no problem brushing fingers across his face, in a touch so tender it bordered on troublesome. And to top it all off, there she was, admitting that this - this -

That he was a unique connection for her.

So he nodded, just accepting anything she said as fact because that was as good as he could do at the moment. She probably could have said 'Hitler was misunderstood' and he just would have nodded, unable to coherently respond. In short, Robert broke.

And to his enduringly guilty conscience, he was enjoying it.

"Uhhhh." That was it. That was his grandest attempt at snapping himself out of it and trying to communicate in a way that could have possibly stopped the train from wrecking as hard as it was. He'd been so sure all of this was done to help Mimsy. So perfectly sure.

Now he was just a jerk.

The single noise that Robert made caused Mimsy to question everything all at once. Why had he said that? Was he just as confused about the definition of 'this' as she was? Had she jeopardized everything by trying to discover the boundaries?

What was she doing?

<What you should be! Silurving and tormbaling and then...kissing!> Svensyl asserted, once her thoughts began to lull.

Exceedingly helpful, as per usual.

She sighed and leaned her head on his shoulder, letting her hand drop. This was beginning to feel as if it would be too confusing to bear. She didn't know what she was supposed to be doing, no matter how long she pretended that she did. Maybe she should...no, no, unfavorable results did not signify the end of an experiment, and it did not signify the end of this.

"Would you prefer to change the topic of discussion?" she asked, staring at her boots. The bee faces stared lifelessly back up at her. "Or we could just simply continue to rest in the shade. Unless this is making you uncomfortable."

Her ongoing struggle with her innate lack of comfort made it a little hypocritical for her to say as much, but it still sounded a lot like a dare.

The answer was yes. This was making him hilariously uncomfortable. He was just starting to admit this to himself when the gut wrenching realization of what that answer meant would occur hit him, and he waved his hands in the air childishly. "Gimme a break, this ain't s**t. I got a better idea than both yours. How about you help me with somethin'. See, you caught me by surprise with that bombshell about Caelius, so how about we make sure that won't happen again. Is there anything else that you think is like, something important I should know about you? Your dad's not H, right?"

Hey, he was old enough.

Feeling her head on his shoulder brought him a strange, familiar comfort. He felt it like a yearning, aching within him. He always felt better when he was holding someone, and he rocked her gently, dropping his head down against hers as he thought hard about what he was saying.

"And if you want, I can tell you some s**t too. Because - and I bet you didn't know this - " God, how he loved being in the position of teaching her something. "But part of being able to love someone is gettin' to know them. All the little things nobody thinks are important until you care enough that they are. Like - why do you paint your hair with all these colors? Doesn't this like take forever?" He tugged on a braid, his third grade flirting skills shining out brilliantly.

Initially, that did not at all sound like a better idea. Upon further inspection of the idea, and the offer that he could tell her facts in return...was it that simple?

"Anything else..." The most serious of secrets had already been spoken, and there were no other relatives that Mimsy knew about. Of course, it was difficult to tell what was 'important' to everyone else, considering how little she cared about most things. Maybe she could just make a small list of general things.

Especially if it would gain her some important intelligence surrounding her personal mission.

"Dwight recruited me. I suspect that he would like to have sex with me. My favorite childhood book was 'Alice in Wonderland'. I have existed in approximately seven alternate universes thus far. Kostya is my first human friend. I do not have a favorite color. These are a birthmark." She pointed to the little spots beneath her right eye.

Oh, this was fun when information of no consequence could be exchanged for something she wanted to know. There were so few left, however, that she decided to just start making them up to be safe. "Clerise was confused about Caelius - the relative that I know about on this island is Lucky. He is my brother. I declined the offer to be an astronaut aboard the International Space Station. I know classified secrets about Mars. Your turn."

She smiled and waited expectantly to trade more, until he pulled on her braid. Oh no, what was--

"Don't do that!" she cried, swatting at his hand. "It is time consuming, but it allows time to think and concentrate on something to clear my mind. I honestly do not recall why I started, but I have been dying it for twelve years."
