Marissa wasn't sure how much she agreed or disagreed with the “victory until death” statement, and it wasn't something she really felt like dwelling on. Death was a bit of a sensitive subject for her. She wasn't even entirely sure she understood what Isha meant by it, but she decided not to think too much on it lest she start making assumptions and twist it into something beyond what he'd really intended.

She was at least moderately relieved that he didn't seem to think this meeting had been a waste. She'd had little confidence in her abilities to teach him anything to begin with, so it was reassuring to think that she'd gotten something across—whether or not that “something” was anything she'd actually intended to impart on him.

“Well, as long as you got something out of it I suppose that's the most important thing,” Marissa said.

This was supposed to be about him, after all. Or, rather, he was the one here with the intention of learning something and fulfilling a goal. Marissa wondered if she was supposed to have learned something about herself in the process, and though she thought that she might have she also wasn't of a mind to sit and examine it quite yet. The poor kid had heard enough of her rambling about things she probably shouldn't have been rambling about to him in the first place. She could give it a rest for the time being.

“Would you like another cup of tea?” she asked, nodding toward his mug.

"Another cup would be great, thank you. Though, I don't know if there is anything else that would require us talking about victory and what not, so perhaps our conversation should take a bit more casual of a turn." Gazing back over at the little one munching away, he slightly wondered to himself how appropriate it would be to ask if he could play with the girl, with some toys or something.

"I remember when my little brother was about her age. I don't get to see him very often anymore, as he has his schedule to keep up with, and I have mine. I remember when my family used to live in a smaller house as well, and I used to babysit him. I kinda miss those days, when the simplest things fascinated the boy, but now, he's completely independent, not wanting to do anything with me, or anyone else for that matter. If you ever need a babysitter, I'd love to volunteer for the job."

Thankful to have something to do again, Marissa went about preparing another cup of tea for Isha, although considering the water in the kettle was still quite hot it took very little time to reach a boil again. She retrieved his mug to pour the water and slid it back to him over the counter so that he would be able to determine for himself when it had steeped long enough for his liking.

In the meantime, Marissa went back to her own cup of tea, which she had been slowly nursing.

“Oh,” she said, when he offered to babysit, switching her attention from Isha to Lilah. “I mean, sure, if you want. I've got some of your parents' contact information since they set all this up, but if there was a way I could contact you directly I could see about arranging it whenever I might need a sitter.”

Sitters were something she was not in short supply of, considering Cal was often home and her niece lived just downstairs, but then there were also times when Cal was away and she knew she shouldn't depend upon Rhiannon for everything. At some point Rhiannon had to go out and do her own thing. She was at that age; she shouldn't be stuck in the house with her aunt and her much younger cousin all the time.

But Marissa appreciated the offer from Isha. She watched Isha watch Lilah, curious that someone of Isha's age could have such an affinity for babies, considering she'd had absolutely no experience when she'd been that age—nor had parenthood been of any interest to her then. But then, she supposed, everyone was different.

“If you want to hold her or play with her, you're welcome to,” Marissa offered, moving over to the high-chair to start cleaning up the minor mess Lilah had made. “She's quiet but not shy.”

"Oh, Yes, sure. I have it right here." He reached into his wallet, pulling out a card that had most of his own contact information in it. "I'm sure it seems a bit silly to carry cards around, but I always figured it was alot faster than simply recalling all of the different numbers I have."

"Thank you, I'd love to play with her, but I don't think playing with her while drinking hot tea would be the best idea. One could never be too safe, I think." Even if he was trying to be the most careful boy in the world, it would be best to simply avoid any instance by not initiating anything. And he planned to leave as soon as he finished this cup of tea. It wouldn't be right of him to impede on any more of her time.

“More convenient than silly, I'd say,” Marissa said, taking Isha's offered card as she desposited the soiled washed rag with which she'd hastily cleaned Lilah onto the counter by the sink.

Alright, it was a little odd that a boy his age was carrying around something akin to a business card, but she thought he had the right idea. Most kids these days were so attached to their technology (and indeed she was a bit attached to her own as well) that she often wondered if any of them actually had their contact information memorized when it was so easy for one person to get in touch with another without memorization being required.

From one of the kitchen drawers, the one she kept for random junk that didn't otherwise have a proper place in the kitchen, Marissa took one of her own business cards and handed it to Isha.

“Here,” she said, “so you'll know my number if I ever call you. Or if you need anything else for your list of arts, or if you think of any more questions you want to ask me, give me a call. I might not be able to answer if I'm in a meeting or something, but leave a voice mail and I'll call back when I can. Or you can e-mail me. That's on there, too.”

"Thank you." The offered card was quickly stashed into his wallet, and placed back where it was before. "I'll to call you on more off hours, but never too late, of course. I wouldn't want to disturb you during any inconvenient times, so perhaps email would be best."

Tea downed in only a few moments, and soon Isha was up on his feet, smiling at the woman who had seemed to have yet to sit down.

"But now.. I think I'll take my leave. Thank you so much for your time today. I truly do appreciate it, and I do hope we can meet again! Maybe next time, we can have another lesson on something else, or I can just spend some time talking again. It was all so very pleasant, thank you."

Marissa could not pretend that she wasn't a bit relieved that this encounter appeared to be over. Not because she didn't want the company (though it might often seem that way), but because she knew she'd struggled with the lesson. She did not feel confident that she'd managed to do any real teaching. Either way, Isha didn't seem to mind. Perhaps he'd gotten something from it after all, and she was simply being too hard on herself.

Whatever the case, Marissa held out her hand to shake, and tried to smile through her uncertainties.

“You're welcome,” she said. “It was nice meeting you, too. I hope you don't tell your parents I was too awful,” she tried to joke, but she thought it might have fallen flat

She moved to pick Lilah back up, and motioned Isha back toward the front of the house, leading him toward the door, as it was polite to. Lilah stared curiously, as she'd done for most of Isha's time in the house, but when it seemed as if the moment of departure had come, she babbled a series of sweet sounding nonsense syllables and waved one of her small hands in farewell.

A few steps and soon Isha was at the front door, turning to face the young woman and her daughter once again.

"Don't worry, it shall only be praises from me, I assure you! Good bye you two, and please, do take care!"

Marissa smiled lightly and nodded, opening the door for Isha. “Take care,” she returned.

Lilah smiled brightly and babbled again, a long series of “ba ba ba ba ba” that could have meant “bye bye,” and could have just as easily meant something else entirely. Marissa gently grabbed her hand to help her execute a more recognizable wave, and stood patiently watching from the doorway as Isha took his leave.
