He studied her reaction, not quite sure what it meant, though his eyes widened slightly when she said his partner's name. Had he... told her? No, he was pretty sure he hadn't, so how did she...

As she continued, he frowned, trying to put the bits and pieces together. He remembered... the mission, and... something about a FEAR scanner. And then... he remembered talking to Mark, something about his weapon, but it seemed there was a gap in his memory between then, and...

Jake barely heard her when she mentioned the lock, already knowing that wasn't there before, but Chester... broke? How? Just what happened? He turned to Sherry, looking even more confused than before.

"I... kind of remember that mission. There were others, and... a FEAR scanner... but I can't remember what happened. How... how did my weapon break?"

She nodded solemnly as he spoke. He looked so lost, she wanted to walk over to him and hug him, tell him everything, and just never let go. But it was Jake and... He didn't know her. She couldn't handle him pushing her away right then.

So she continued with her sad smile. "Right. You were leading, and we were supposed to observe the scanner. Gale, Marcus, Stormy, you, and myself. But something went wrong, some guy exploded and you went running off." Sherry shifted her feet uncomfortably again. They'd never really talked about that day. Not whole a lot being angry with each other about it.

She shrugged. "We followed you. Stormy and I caught up just in time to see a couple of horsemen drag you off. We went after you, but the horsemen were a bit too tough. They messed your foot up, and your shoulder. You had a spear right through it. While you were basically pinned to the wall, some big horseman took Chester from you and just snapped him." Sherry wiped a tear away and blinked. That had been a bad day, and with everything right now, she could curse her weak heart.

"That was it. The horseman broke him. Then we were rescued. You ...you don't remember what Mark said? I was hoping Chester would be alright by now. He's a sweetheart." And Jake could probably use him right about now, confused as he was looking.

Crap. She was going to cry. How can he not remember?

As Sherry explained what happened, he sat down, soaking in every detail. Yes, there were five people. He vaguely remembered asking each one... except her. Why only her? Surely if he asked her, he would have remembered. But he only remembered SOMEONE. But rather than dwell on it, he continued to listen, grimacing as he began to remember more and more.

Right, there was that nosy civilian, and then, a shadow...
His expression grew more troubled as he remembered the lair, the horseman...
He unconsciously raised a hand to rub at his shoulder, feeling the raised skin. This too...

And then...

--------------------

Chester's voice still screaming in his head, abruptly cutting off the moment the horseman twisted the tonfas in two, dropping the broken remains on the ground.

"CHESTER!!"

He clutched his head, gasping as the memory came rushing back. Pinned against the wall, he was helpless, helpless as he watched the horsemen sneer at the others. It had been his fault, his fault that they ended up in such a situation, and they... though the horsemen promised them a painless death, he knew they were lying. They were never to be trusted anyways. They were going to torture them all, until they begged for death, laughing and delighting in their screams, their agony, soaking in every bit of fear they let out, mocking them, declaring themselves as the superior race as hunters, no, humans, were just cattle.

The horseman's laughter echoed, bordering on manic, and Jake only hissed at him, weapons raised threateningly. But someone was warning him, telling him to stop, but it was too late. He wanted nothing than to destroy them, to hurt them back. He would never let the horsemen have their way. Chester's cries fell on deaf ears as the only thing that went through his mind was pure revenge.

But then everything happened so fast. He finally heard, heard him screaming, begging him to abandon such thoughts, but it was too late. The horseman sneered at him, and then, the others were forgotten. Just him and the horseman. They were taunting him, calling him weak, and Jake only snarled at him, attempting to lash out at him with his free hand. but then the weapons were gone, pried out of his hand.

At first he seethed, angry that the horseman would lay his filthy hands on it, and tried to free himself, but something distracted him. Chester. His voice grew more frantic, fearful, pleading. And then... absolute silence. He only watched in stunned disbelief as the broken weapon dropped to the ground, the impact against the ground seeming to echo through the lair, the horseman's laughter echoing even louder, harsher. He had failed. He had failed them all.

"CHESTER!!"

-----------------------

He was still gasping, hands shaking as they were clutching his head, beads of swear dripping down his face. He remembered now. Though the horseman broke it, it was HIS fault, his fault for allowing the horseman to get his hands on it, and now...

He squeezed his eyes shut, breathing slowly returning to normal.
"I... remember." Letting go of his hair, his hands rested in his lap as he slowly opened his eyes. "I... remember now. It's... it's my fault. Chester would be fine now, but, it's... it's my fault he's not. It's all my FAULT!" His fists slammed against the bed, and then he buried his face in his hands.

Chester, I'm so sorry.

Sherry almost regretted telling him. She'd watched him sit, and it had taken her a moment to realize just how upset it made him. It scared her, the way he acted. She'd seen it before, more or less, but it always made her hurt for him. She moved nearer out of instinct and habit, and had one hand raised to tentatively reach out and touch him as he seemed to be calming. She froze when he spoke and she flinched when he yelled.

If tears were falling she hardly noticed. Jake hurt and she felt like it was her fault. Combined with the pain she was already feeling and Sherry just hurt. Her heart ached. It ached for her and it ached for Jake. But right now he was the one falling apart, which meant she couldn't afford to.

Quietly, slowly, Sherry sat down on the bed next to him. Not too close, but close enough to feel his warmth. Or maybe she imagined that. "It is, to a point, your fault. But you already beat yourself up over it." She reached out and placed on hand on his shoulder. "You can't change it, but you can fix it. You can fix Chester." She was certain of that much. He'd been certain of it, before, hadn't he?

Hearing Sherry move, and feeling a hand on his shoulder, he shifted slightly, raising his head until he was looking at her. Part of him wanted to just cry, about everything. But he couldn't. All that was left was this hollow empty feeling inside of him, and that look she was giving him... as if she was in pain too. Oh right, of course. They had been close before, right? Of course it'd hurt to be forgotten.

With a shaky sigh, he placed a hand over hers, thankful for her support.
"Thanks. I guess I'll... figure something out. Chester's tough. He won't kick the bucket that easily." And neither would he. As long as he was fine, Chester was fine, right? So he'd take care of himself, for his sake.

Realizing this moment might have seemed a bit more intimate than he'd like, he removed his hand, embarrassed.
"Ah, um, sorry. I..." He scratched the back of his head and frowned. "Um, you probably didn't come here to see me freak out. I know I don't remember much, but, uh, is there anything I can do for you?"

She didn't like the look on his face. She wanted to make things better and take away all the confusion and the hurt. It wasn't something she could do, she knew that. But if she could help him a little, it would be okay.

His hand was warm. His hands were always warm. Her smile was a little less sad. "Right. You'll work it out and he'll be back in no time."

The moment lasted just long enough for her to enjoy it, and then Jake shifted again, moving his hand. She could read him well enough to catch the embarrassment. Her gaze went to the floor as the hollow in her chest seemed a little bigger, a little colder and lonelier. She hoped the dim light in the room hid the look on her face. It couldn't be anything but sad.

"No, it's okay," she said again, shaking her head slightly. "I came to make sure you were alright and--" She stopped, the words catching in her throat again. She took two deep breaths, hoping to stop the tears, but she felt them, warm and wet on her lap anyway.

"But if you don't remember," she was bordering on full on crying, "then no. I don't suppose there is anything you can do. Short of kissing me and telling me it was all a joke." She shrugged and sobbed and reached for his hand, even though that was a selfish thing to do. "You don't remember me at all, do you?"

Seeing her cry made him stiffen, and he wondered if he said something wrong.
... O-oh. Right.
He let her take his hand, not knowing what to do.
... Kiss her?
His face flushed, and he turned his head away.

"I-I guess... we were kinda close before, weren't we..." He gave an awkward laugh, and rubbed the back of his head again. He tried his best to remember. She said she was part of that mission, right? So he should remember her. But try as he might, he recalled the other 4 relatively easily. But her... it was a blank. Why thought? He didn't understand.

"I'm... I'm sorry, I... really don't."

Sherry nodded and without thinking she leaned over, taking a shoulder to cry on even though it hadn't really been offered. It hurt inside and she didn't know what to do about it. She'd tried to keep it in, but thinking about it and saying what she had just sent her over the edge. She held onto his hand with one of hers, while her other clutched at the back of his shirt and her forehead rested on his shoulder. Dammit. She didn't want to cry.

He didn't remember her. He'd forgotten her. There hadn't been anything but confusion in his eyes when he looked at her. And now... Now she was clinging to him and crying on him and she'd just said too much. Far too much. This was too much.

She let go of him and pushed herself to her feet, turning away and wiping at her face. "Oh heavens. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." She sniffed, remembering a time she'd woken up with no memories and next to someone she hadn't recognized. She recognized him now and it took even more effort not to resume sobbing. "This must be strange and I'm sorry I didn't mean to let go. You don't even know me." She shook her head and smiled at him, one of those sad smiles. It wasn't fair to him, if he didn't remember. It wasn't his fault.

She sniffed, glad she'd realized what she was doing. "Look. I'm, um, in 139 if you need anything. I'll help if I can." She turned away again, moving toward the door. She wasn't going to tell him goodbye. Not now. She kind of was too busy hoping she'd make it to the hall before breaking down again.

Her reaction surprised him, but he didn't move or push her away. It seemed she had these emotions bottled up for a while, and... he had a feeling it was his fault. No, not a feeling. It WAS his fault. He had seen her reaction change from furious to understanding to... something else.

He didn't know why or how he ended up forgetting her, but... whatever the reason was, it seemed to hurt her deeply, and so he only sat and waited until she finished getting every bit of emotion out. Hopefully by letting it out, she'd feel a bit better.

When she finally stopped and stood, he could see that she was far from ok, and frowned as she apologized profusely and attempted to leave. Though he didn't know her that well, he knew that this was really important to her, and it made him feel worse about not being able to remember.

"Wait." He reached out to take hold of her wrist, his grip firm but not forceful. Should she decide to pull away, he wouldn't stop her, but he really didn't feel comfortable leaving things as they were.

"I'm... sorry I can't remember you, but just because I don't remember, doesn't mean it didn't happen." He gave her a sad smile. "I know it hurts, but... perhaps if you... go over some memories... I might remember something?"
He only hoped what he suggested wouldn't end up hurting her more.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 04, 2013 6:43 pm

Sherry looked at the hand on her wrist. Warm and strong and... Sherry blinked and looked at his face. Had Jake ever stopped her from leaving before? He'd asked her to stay at least once, but physically stopping her? She couldn't remember right then.

"If you want," she said, sniffing. She didn't know how much she could talk about without crying again. "I would like to try." She was nodding. Anything to help, any memory would do. She almost wasn't sure what the worst part was. That he'd forgotten about their shared feelings or the fact that he'd forgotten her altogether.

"We met almost a year ago." She had to pause for a breath again, and stepped closer not bothering to move her wrist from his grip. "In the haunted house, the place where the worlds meet. There was fog and insanity and um, weird hunters and Caelius fought some strange monster. We met in a small room with a wolf monster and two other things. Do you remember that?"

When she looked at his hand, he let go, embarassed he stopped her so abruptly. Hopefully... she didn't think he was forcing her to stay. She could leave if she really wanted to, but he did want to try to at least help her, if possible. After all, she helped him remember something important, if unpleasant, so perhaps if he could remember something else...

A year ago? They had known each other that long? If he remembered correctly, he had... woken up almost a year ago, so... if what she was saying was true, she was... one of the first people he met, which only made him feel worse for not remembering.

"Um, I vaguely recall that mission, yes. I think it was my very first mission, and it was at the Haunted House, and... we were examining... insanity beasts..." Well, less examining and more... fighting, but close enough.
"And, I remember... the death lead, fighting..."
He frowned, trying to recall all the bits and pieces. An insanity wolf, and then something else, and... he fought some smaller dog-looking wolf thing, a Halloween creature, he presumed, and... dammit, why couldn't he remember her?
"I... remember all of that, but... I can't remember you..." He clenched his fist, staring at Sherry with an intense gaze. "Is there more? Maybe something else can trigger it. I remember these things exactly how you described them, so surely one of them will trigger something about you, I'm sure."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 04, 2013 8:02 pm

"Yeah." She nodded. It had been his first mission. "That's the one."

She maybe flinched just the slightest bit under his gaze, his words driving the cold point home. He didn't remember her at all. It was like she'd not even been there, apparently.

"Um," she said, thinking fast as she could, "after the weapons were awake again --they'd fallen asleep during that mission-- you and I, we played Jenga. You wrote all over my face, and I wrote on yours." She had to pause for a breath. A happy memory of hers, and it made her want to cry. "We sparred, too. A few times."

Her gaze fell to the floor. What...what could be important enough he might remember?

Ah, yes, he remembered that too. It had been an unpleasant experience, thought he couldn't quite remember why... but being weaponless would be a cause for alarm, especially since they were up against such powerful adversaries, wasn't it?

"...Jenga?"
He crossed his arms and closed his eyes, trying to concentrate.
"I remember... playing it, and getting frustrated it kept getting toppled over, but... not much after that. And... I know I've had a lot of spars with lots of different people. Even now, I can't remember every single one I've sparred with."

He shook his head, his gaze apologetic.
"Sorry, those don't seem to be... really powerful memories. Is there something else? Something perhaps... really important?" He knew he was grasping at straws here, but surely there was more. If he remembered the events she describes, then they were on the right track, right?
PostPosted: Wed Sep 04, 2013 9:24 pm

She tried really hard not to look hurt. Jenga was one of her fondest memories, permanent marker and all. She bit her lip, not wanting to chew on it but doing it anyway and crossed her arms in front of her. Really important? They were all kind of important to her, and she wasn't sure if she could handle telling him things only to have him look at her like that again. All confused and sorry and the way one looks at someone they don't know. It hurt and she kind of wanted it to stop hurting already.

"We... we went shopping together. I made you go because you needed winter clothes. You picked curry for lunch. I bought you pants and T-shirts for Christmas." She shook her head again. Not good enough. That hadn't been important to him then. "We went places together. Up that mountain of the old gods, and to that island where we were both minipets for a time. Do you remember that? The climbing and the lava? The statues and the artifacts? We...we were even strange turtle cat crossbreeds for a bit. Here. On the island."

Ok, perhaps "important" wasn't the right word, and he immediately regretted it the moment it slipped out of his mouth. But at least she didn't seem to give up, and so he wouldn't, hoping desperately that one of these memories would trigger SOMETHING.

As she continued on about some shopping trip, he tried to remember. Well, he was fond of curry. He remembered someone making it for him before. Was it her? Though he couldn't remember who it was, he had a feeling it wasn't her. And clothes... well, that explained where those came from. He knew he wouldn't have gone out and picked those himself.

... Old gods?
He wasn't sure about the turtle-cat crossbreed, nor did he... really want to know, but his curiousity was piqued at the mention of artifacts.

"Artifacts?"
