It was an important question, and not one Remarque had any intention of answering incorrectly. Why he did anything was a good question. His usual lifestyle dictated that he did nothing if not for himself, but 'because I want to' was neither entirely true nor was it the only reason he offered. "Because if my neck were ever on the line, I'd like to trust that there would be those willing to play a hand in sparing it. We're both senshi. Different, and perhaps enemies, but only because the masses dictate it. The Dark Mirror Court is not so new that we are feared for that, but we are not so old that we are understood, either. For whatever villainy the Negaverse commits, we play no part in it. They're far more hostile with their methods. Ares set up a goal for us—to get into space. That and to try and convince the rest of the senshi that the Dark Mirror Court is the best choice out there, but that's been a pretty slow moving goal. What am I going to do, beat you into submission to get you to join us? Doesn’t exactly seem like the proper build up to a long, healthy relationship. Why fight if we can work out our differences like sophisticated men, right? You want what's best for your planet, I want what's best for mine."
It didn't mean Remarque wouldn't fight to get whatever the hell he wanted, but he wasn't going to go out and break necks and still think he could convince people to join the Dark Mirror Court. He wasn't a pushover and he wasn't going to stand by and get his a** kicked, but he'd try a few words before he threw any punches. Probably.
"As long as our goals aren't conflicting, why fight? My goals aren't so different from yours, not in the long run. And as long as they stay that way, I don't see any reason for hostilities."

Athene had listened quietly while Remarque answered his question, a thoughtful expression on his face but he nodded when the the blond dark mirror eternal finished speaking "I get that" and more than that Remarque's reasoning was one that he could accept. "Although" and here he quirked a slight if somewhat rueful smile. "I'm not sure if sophisticated is a term that really fits me." The smile faded as a serious note slipped into his quiet voice turned serious "But I agree that it's pretty pointless to fight on non-conflicting goals." Then again - despite the fact that Athene would fight if he felt he had to - he had never really been one for fighting and it was something that (despite his now eternal rank) had not changed. Remarque took satisfaction in Athene's response, though also took great effort not to let it show. "Sometimes I think there are too many senshi eager for battle. They're willing to fight over anything, just to see their hands covered in blood. Be careful," he warned, "I've met my fair share of senshi who don't need a 'reason' to fight. They don't care what you are or what you think, they'll fight you just because they have an excuse to. I don't even know what they're fighting for. If they're trying to create a better world, they're failing miserably. It's the minds of great men," he tapped his temple, "Who will create a new world. Not senseless battles."
Senseless battles were the product of senseless minds.
Remarque fought, but he was not under the delusion that any single battle was going to win the war. He fought because he enjoyed it. Because he enjoyed the rush. The satisfaction of delivering the final blow.
But if they wanted to win this war? It would take more than just fighting.
They'd need sensible senshi, willing to accept the new world the Dark Mirror Senshi was going to make. Willing to be a part of it—wanting to be a part of it.
They just needed a good leader. Someone who could think beyond the nonstop brawls.
Someone who would give the senseless battles meaning.
"I respect any senshi who has goals outside of battle. I value that sort of thinking. It's really such a shame you aren't a member of the Dark Mirror Court, Athene. We'd be able to make great use of your skills. Alas, if the White Moon holds your heart, we'll just have to see what our future holds. Even if you aren't fighting, it would be wonderful if you could talk some sense into the other senshi. The ones that give the rest of the senshi a bad name, perhaps. They could use guidance. Perhaps you could give it to them?"

"Senshi and Negaverse both" Athene said quietly, although he used the word senshi in the broad sense rather than limiting it to any one side. Actually despite knowing that there were some on his side that advocated for more violent methods when dealing with those who followed chaos, Athene had yet to come across a senshi of the white moon that actually used them - on the other hand he'd also come across quite a few Negaverse members and none of them had seemed to have any regard for other peoples’ lives. He sighed "To be honest the whole war thing seem pretty senseless to me, like we're all being expected to fight someone else's war." After all the Moon Queen was dead - having seen her ghost, it was something Athene truely believed - although it hadn't changed the fact that the war still carried on. The fact that Remarque still considered him Dark Mirror senshi material was something that took Athene by surprise a little, after all he'd been pretty honest about the fact that he wasn't looking to join, had too many ties that he would never willingly turn his back on. To his private relief, the taller blond didn't push though since Athene would have ended up having to point out that he still wasn't looking to join. He looked thoughtful for a moment about him providing guidance "I'm not really leader material" he admitted. "And my goals aren't even really that grand compared to some of the others." After all he wanted to help out new white moon senshi and knights and protect people as best he could, hardly the sort of stuff that made for great exploits. "But I try to do what I think right and I'll continue to do it to the best of my ability."

"Sometimes the best leaders are the ones who doubt themselves," Remarque shrugged. "You let me know if you ever get tired of the White Moon. Of fighting for some queen who abandoned you all so long ago. Or," he shrugged, "If she ever comes back. That'd be something interesting to look into. Not that I think she could help me or anything, but I suppose it'd be nice to know what's going on. I worry about all the Senshi who might just fall back on her. Forgive her. Who are just going to set them up for failure and disappointment again. If that ever happens," he shrugged.
"They'll need good, honest leaders. Certainly not unlike yourself. Don't let them fall for her." He brushed himself off, turning his attention to the sky again. "Maybe we'll all make it out just fine. Maybe we just need time to get on the same page. So she'd better not come back in and start messing things up again. She can go back to whatever dark corner of space she's been lurking in and stay there for all I care."
The idea of her out there, polluting space filled his mouth with an undesirable taste, as though he hadn't brushed his teeth in some time. His lips pursed and he sighed. "…You'll have to tell me what it's like up there, seeing as it doesn't seem like I'll be making as many trips as I'd like. But I know I like what I've seen. And I don't want her or anyone else messing up this world—or any other out there."

"Perhaps" Athene said, although he personally didn't see Remarque's comments as applying to him. "And personally I don't think you need to worry about the Moon Queen coming back or messing anything up, I honestly can't see it happening." He admitted, adding "Ghosts don't come back." It wasn't that he didn't believe that the Moon Queen existed - Athene had seen her ghost, had been saved by her ghost the night that the one big combined senshi and knight meeting that he'd attended had ended in bloodshed - however the fact that she was a ghost and a ghost that he hadn't seen since pointed to (at least to him) the fact that she was long dead. He shrugged, "And I'm not doing this for her anyway" he admitted. Mayhaps there were other senshi out there who had decided to fight for the Moon Queen or at least fight in her name, but Athene wasn't one of them. At Remarque's comment about telling him what it was like in space, he hesitated for a moment before admitting "I can't really tell you much about space, but I could show you Athene at some point." Or at least he could if the other eternal was still interested in seeing his asteroid by the time he got round to going again. Kyuseisha no Hikari so sorry for the slowness Kyu

Not having to worry about the moon queen? Well, that was some shade of satisfaction. If she was going to stay out of the way, then she was one less person he had to worry about it. Though, he wasn't entirely sure if Athene's logic could work; ghosts did come back. Raven—and a handful of other people from the Surrounding were proof of that.
And if someone had been able to bring them back…with enough effort, couldn't someone bring her back, too?
And then, if she was back—if she had her way…
He shrugged off the idea; that was something he would have to worry about at a later time. Possibly after he investigated just how those civilians had been brought back to life on the Surrounding.
Now, he had more important things to worry about. Like going into space.
He tilted his head at Athene's offer, contemplating. "You would be willing to do that?" he inquired, though he didn't require an answer before he was nodding, himself. "If you're willing, I would never turn down an offer like that, Athene. I'd be grateful for the opportunity."litian Sorry for my slowness, too! ;;

"Not for everyone" Athene admitted, after all he had no intention of searching out dark mirror senshi and randomly offering to show them his asteroid and he didn't want his offer to be mistaken as such. "But yes, if you want to see Athene some time then I'll take you." It was an offer than some would probably say he shouldn't be making given the fact that the two of them stood on opposite sides, however Athene thought that they had been pretty open about their loyalties and his encounters with Remarque (few as they were), had always been pleasant, the taller blond having always come across as okay in his book. His voice turned slightly rueful as he added "Although perhaps not tonight." Despite for once being able to patrol within having to keep his cousin's movements in mind, he didn't want to end up getting back home to-too late. "Mayhaps on our next meeting though." Whenever that ended up being.

Remarque grinned. "Mayhaps," he mimicked, though did not seem like he was trying to be insulting. "I'd take you up on that. But it's already getting a little late tonight, I don't know how long it takes to travel from here to there. I've got people waiting for me at home and I don't think they'd appreciate me coming home at too late an hour."
He wasn't sure they'd listen to the explanation either, but it was rarely that his mother even noticed he was gone. He took great efforts to maintain the illusion of an innocent life, and so far as he knew, his mother didn't suspect anything out of the ordinary. He intended to keep it that way, and if that meant he had to put off space adventure for a while, it was a sacrifice he'd have to make.
"Though, space or not, I do hope to run into you again. These conversations are nice. Perhaps one day I'll take you to Mirrorspace. If that sort of thing interests you, anyway."

Athene gave a slight nod, at the taller senshi's people waiting for him comment, "I know how that is" he admitted - after all he had his cousin who he had to fit patrols around. He gave a a slight, but friendly smile in response to Remarque's grin as he continued "I enjoy our conversations too," adding in answer to the other's mention of Mirrorspace "And I'd like that I think, one day." He meant it too, after all despite the fact that their paths never seemed to cross that often, Athene had always enjoyed speaking to the taller Dark Mirror senshi and whilst it was a shame that they stood on opposing sides he didn't accept that being on opposite sides meant that they couldn't have friendly or reasonable conversations. His smile turned rueful as he admitted "But I'd best be getting going myself." There was after all the rest of his patrol still waiting for him before he could contemplate heading homewards himself.
