"Hm. I could be depressed," Dana said as she mulled this over. She was already doing an excellent job being near death from social trauma.

She scrunched her face together as she thought about the rest. "I am going to this school because of my rap sheet."

Rap sheet was a little dramatic. She had gotten caught shoplifting some lipstick and wasn't allowed in that store anymore, but she was off the hook since she was a first time offender. She tagged things as a senshi but she hadn't gotten caught yet.

Mostly, her father felt she needed more structure and guidence than he was capable of offering and he didn't want her to head further down that path. Charlie was gentle and good natured, but he was not so naive as to think there wasn't stuff he hadn't found out about yet.

"HITS is for nerds, Tara. It's made for smart people. I couldn't get a scholarship there or Crystal, I'm not special like you or Evie."

Tara almost fell off the couch, and waved her arms wildly to keep herself from going over. "You have a rap sheet?!" And yet she was considered the black sheep of her family, just for missing some (read: tons) of school? Where was the justice in that?

"Okay then, scratch option two. As for depression, well, it kind of runs in the family." Except not really. It was more like depressing events ran in the family, and Tara was all too aware that a number of them were linked to her. Though not all. She looked at Dana, remembering a phone call her mother had gotten years ago that had changed everything. Definitely not all.

The implication that she was a nerd didn't faze her at all. Tara was a nerd, and she took pride in that. "I didn't get into HITS because I'm a nerd, Dana. I went there because I missed a bunch of school- remember, that whole thing with the missing 59 people? Well, you could call me the unofficial 60th. I went home for dinner every night, so Kent never reported me missing, but I didn't go to school at all. So when HITS offered those kids a place to go, they extended the offer to me. I guess it was convenient for them or something. Anyway, my point is that they take people in bad situations. They might take you too."

Not that she had a clue about HITS' admission policy, but she figured that if they were willing to take someone like her, there might be room for Dana as well.

"And hey, you're totally special. And plenty smart, when you put your mind to it. So don't even go there."

"Just a little shoplifting, wasn't any big deal."

Dana made eye contact when Tara grave her a look, and then sat up, resting her chin on her knees as she mulled things over.

"SIGH," She declared loudly. She didn't actually sigh, she just said the word.

"Why is our family always such a mess?" She complained, trying to feign some sort of teenage selfishness and misunderstanding. It made things seem less serious that way. There was some level of hurt that her father was sending her away instead of dealing with her cries for attention.

And of course, Evie somehow morphing into a whimpering coward was earth shattering.

"Are you happy here with Kent?" She mumbled, picking at her knee socks that were having trouble not sagging on her legs.

Tara knew she was probably supposed to scold Dana for shoplifting, but really, why bother? Nobody would be hurt by it, and it was probably a phase that would wear off eventually.

Even though it probably wasn’t meant that way, she couldn’t help but take Dana’s complaint to mean that the problems with their family were all her fault. Weren’t they? Aside from a single, isolated incident several years ago, was there anything they were dealing with that didn’t directly relate to the fact that she was a senshi? Was there anything she could have done to prevent all of the terrible things that had happened?

Then Dana asked an even more loaded question, and Tara looked away. “I’m not not happy,” she muttered, but that sounded incredibly unconvincing. “I mean, I wouldn’t be happier anywhere else. And I know I need to be here, to fight. And Kent is great about things, he really is, but…”

Everything suddenly overflowed, and Tara buried her face in her hands. “He’s suspicious. He’s watching me, and I can’t let him find out about this, ever. Or get involved, the way you have. Kent and Evie need to stay out of this mess, and that means they need to stay away from me. But that just makes him more determined to find out what’s going on, and that can’t happen.”

What was she supposed to do when all the possible outcomes were bad?

“Don’t worry about it, though.” Slowly she peeled her hands away from her face and gave an obviously fake smile. “You have enough on your plate, and I’ll figure out a way to deal with this.” She had to. Nobody else was entering this battle because of her.

And here Dana was musing on Evie's grand transformation into a crybaby. However, Tara had always been someone she considered more on her level where Evie was an authority figure.

Tara had more clearance to be human and feel emotion and be frightened and stressed and scared versus Evie who was just supposed to suck it up and be mom 2.0, even if that was an expectation Dana made subconsciously.

She crawled off the floor to join Tara on the couch, sinking into the seat next to her and invasively poking at the fake smile she attempted to put on.

"You want me to distract him? I'm very distracting. And I've been told I have daddy issues." Mostly by people who knew nothing about her or her father making vast assumptions, but that was besides the point. And she needed something to verbally spew so she didn't go ahead and hint what her brain was already screaming. Evie's already part of the war and she actually needs to get her massive butt involved! Very involved!

"Oh! I'll ask him for advice about boys. Yes, that'll throw him off for a few days. I have a lot of questions about the high school dating pool anyway, the kind of stuff I defs can't ask dad about."

Being comforted by her little cousin made Tara feel silly. Touched, but still silly. She was the grown-up, supposedly. It was her job to know what she was doing and to help where she could. She was not supposed to dissolve into hysterics. It might have been better if she could say this was the first time something like this had happened, but that was far from the truth, so she didn't.

Dana's suggestion was met with choked laughter. "Seriously? You want to ask him how to pick up guys?" That was actually amusing enough to take her mind off her problems, so even if it didn't distract Kent, Tara was satisfied. "He didn't go to high school here, so I doubt that he'd know specifics about Hillworth boys versus Meadowview boys, or whatever. But maybe he could offer you some tricks he's used or something."

Come to think of it, Kent never seemed to go on dates. Did their side of the family just miss out on the promiscuity gene that their cousin seemed to have gotten?

"Whatever," Dana snorted and sunk into the couch with a long, drawn out sigh.

"Let's just watch TV. Do you have any food?"
