Walpurgis set the scalpel back down as Zinnia threw herself in front of the zubat and put his hands into the air. "Think rationally: if I wanted to kill him, or any one of you, I could have done it back in the woods. I could have done it before I brought you to somewhere you could escape from and tell about. Retrieval of the mew isn't my mission right now; I failed, and so it got given to someone else. Now, rationally, what reason besides helping you would I have to bring you to my home and send Satori away?"
In response to the mew, he continued. "I can't guarantee anything. For all I know, whatever is in his stomach isn't actually the issue. But I'm willing to take the risk that I'm wrong." He gave the mew and the girl a hard look. "Are you willing to take the risk that I'm right? What would your plan be? Kill me, and go find someone else at this hour to help Zyk? As far as anyone knows, I'm just a doctor. Even if you DO get Zyk healed, are you able to outrun not only the rockets who will want your mew and the officers who will want to arrest you for murder?"
He lowered his hands, keeping his eyes on Zinnia. "Be rational about this. You may not like me. You may not trust me. I'm not asking you to do either. All I ask is that you understand that I have no reason to deceive you here. You may not like it, but the truth is that I'm the best chance you have. If you want to take your chances elsewhere, then go ahead." Walpurgis pointed to the door. "I won't stop you. I'd prefer not to lose my place here, so I won't follow you. I won't even alert Team Rocket to your presence. So, if you rationally figure there is an option better than the one you have now, go for it. Take your zubat and leave. Whatever your decision, however, I'd prefer you made it fast. The salve's effects don't last that long, and I'd like to get this done while they do."

"We're leaving!" Zinnia said. "I won't let you cut--" She was suddenly distracted when a bright purple aura surrounded her. She found herself lifted through the air and placed gently on the far side of the room. She was turned around forcibly, with her nose in the corner. "Shadow--!" she exclaimed. The mew did not release her.
Shadow Mew moved out of Walpurgis's way. she said tersely. She moved over to Zinnia's side. she commanded, The normally silent mew's patience had clearly worn thin.

At least one of them has the capability to be rational.
Picking the scalpel back up, Walpurgis pressed along the zubat's belly until he found the objects once more and made a small cut. Sure enough, the stomach was slightly bulging from whatever was inside. Grabbing a small spoon from the desk, he made a small incision into the stomach, ignoring the blood that pooled around his hand. Placing the spoon beneath the cut, Walpurgis scraped the duller side of the scalpel along the inside of Zyk's stomach, and a number of small fragments of rock fell out and into the spoon. Removing them, he repeated the process a few more times before he was satisfied there were no more. Taking the potion, he sprayed it along the zubat's stomach, watching the flesh stitch itself back together. He sprayed the rest on the first cut he made, and that wound, too, sealed up within seconds.
"It's done."

Shadow Mew released Zinnia at Walpurgis's word, and the girl immediately ran to the zubat. She picked him up, saw that he was not hurt, and hugged him tightly. "Thank you, thank you, thank you," she said with new tears running down her cheeks. Shadow said nothing, but her opinion of Walpurgis had certainly changed. She knew that they were now indebted to him. Finally, it seemed, they could relax. A few seconds, pregnant with relief, plodded by. Then, Zyk began to glow brightly. Zinnia held him out at arm's length and squinted against the white light that had once been her zubat. Something is happening! ... ... ... Congratulations! Your Zyk has evolved into Golbat! Zyk opened his eyes for an instant before he was forced to close them again. His head was spinning. That fraction of a second-- he had seen. There was so much! Too much! There was... Light. Color. And... someone important. He opened his eyes again, but more slowly this time. He adjusted to the brightness inside the cabin, and slowly took in all the new information through eyes that he'd never had before. "(You are beautiful,)" he said to Zinnia. "You look amazing!" Zinnia exclaimed. Zyk was a very small golbat. His days on her shoulder were over, but she was able to hold him on her forearm as he was currently perched without too much difficulty. "Wow! You're a golbat now! I thought you would never evolve! Congratulations! You're going to be so strong!" Zyk still felt a little queasy, but Zinnia's excitement was infectious; he quickly forgot his discomfort and examined his new body. He was bigger... stronger. And best of all, he could see. The curse that left him permanently a zubat-- and a liability-- was over. He would be a real asset... he could be the best. He slowly looked in Walpurgis's direction. So that was the face of his... enemy? He was no longer certain. He would consider a truce, for now. His eyes soon strayed back to Zinnia's face. He couldn't believe that he had once thought that he had known her. For years, he had known her only as how his voice sounded when reflected off her body. Everything was different now. It was overwhelming. She was so colorful. She was perfect.

Walpurgis ran water over the scalpel and spoon, rinsing the blood off before it could rust. Once he was finished, he placed them to the side. He gave a small smile to Zinnia and her now-golbat Zyk. Drying his hands, he spoke. "Well, it seems like everything's alright. I reckon he'll be sore for at least another day, so you should refrain from letting him battle for now." Setting the towel down, he continued. "If you need a place to stay for the night, I know a police officer in town that can give you a place to stay. I can give her a call if you like."

"Yes, please! Thank you!" Zinnia said gratefully. It would probably be healthier for Zyk to sleep indoors until he was completely recovered. "Shadow... do you think you could get the others, too? Will you be able to teleport them all?"
Shadow nodded. She wasn't certain that it would be a good idea to leave Zinnia and a weakened Zyk alone with Walpurgis, but he had done nothing but help them so far. She vanished.
"Should... should we pay you?" Zinnia asked, feeling a little awkward. She no longer knew where she stood with Walpurgis. She had never really thought of him as a friend, exactly, but they had been teammates. Then they had been enemies. If his mission to capture Shadow really had been given to someone else, where did that leave them now? Zinnia was technically a traitor; that meant that Walpurgis had risked his own status in Team Rocket to help her. That made him a good person in her book.

Walpurgis waved his hand as he picked up his cell phone, yawning. "Ah, don't worry about that. You're not exactly the first person to end up getting help from me out here. Just the first that knows I'm with Team Rocket. So if you want to repay me, just don't tell anyone I'm with Team Rocket." He finished dialing the number and pressed the phone up to his ear.
"Ah, Miss Hartmann? Sorry for calling so late, but I have a girl here who needs a place to stay for the night. ...No, I haven't done anything to her. ...Yes, you should believe that. It's not something you should be joking about. ...Thank you, Miss Hartmann. See you soon." Walpurgis hung up the phone and sighed. "Pain in the a**."

"Of course," Zinnia said. The thought of revealing him hadn't even crossed her mind. She waited until Walpurgis hung up before asking tentatively, "Do... do you know who is supposed to capture Shadow now?" She wasn't sure how friendly Walpurgis was feeling, now that Zyk was safe. It might not be safe to wheedle him for information. Still, she couldn't help but try.
Zyk squeaked a soft warning. He'd rather they left as quickly as they could to that Hartmann's place.

Walpurgis pursed his lips together thoughtfully. "Mm... I dunno. I think after I failed that last time it got passed back onto Clyde, but I'm not sure. I haven't really been paying attention. Of course, eventually I might get sent after you again, but that's not a worry right now." Suddenly remembering something important, he clapped his hand onto his head. "Oh, that's right! Here I'm not Walpurgis, I'm 'Doctor Siegfried Lothar'. It would probably be more natural to just call me 'Dr. Lothar', though."

"Dr. Lothar?" Zinnia said with a smirk. "Okay, I won't forget."
Shadow Mew suddenly reappeared with the rest of the team below her.
"Oh! Thank you! I'm really sorry, guys. Look, Zyk is all better now! And he evolved!" The young trainer grinned happily.
Zebo, Dreydonna, and Zarya were all a bit wary. They felt like they had missed something important, but they were also distracted and impressed by their little zubat friend's evolution. The pokemon started chatting, and Zyk explained what had happened while they were stranded in the forest. He made a good case for Zinnia; Zebo and Zarya quickly forgave her, and Dreydonna seemed to feel indifferent about the whole situation. It was good to see that the team was yet unbroken.
Once the babble settled down, Zinnia said reluctantly, "I'm really sorry about this, guys, but it might be best if you all hide in your pokeballs for tonight. We'll leave Motterossa tomorrow morning, but tonight we're staying at Ms. Hartmann's place, and we don't want to scare her... Um, Zyk will have to stay out of his pokeball for a while, though; I want to make sure that he's all healed now... Is that all right? It's just for tonight."
Her pokemon nodded in assent, and Zinnia got out their pokeballs one by one. Finally, she held up the masterball that belonged to Shadow. "Thank you for everything, Shadow," she said softly. "Do you want to stay out tonight?"
The mew said nothing. She drifted toward the ball, poked the button in the center with her nose, and was sucked inside in a beam of red light.
"Now it's just us," Zinnia said to Zyk, pocketing the last ball. "You really look great. Maybe Ms. Hartmann has a mirror so you can see yourself better!"
Zyk was cheered by the prospect, and Zinnia looked back to Walpurgis.

Walpurgis watched the pokemon suddenly appear and go into their pokeballs. A knock sounded at the door. "Uh, Dr. Lothar? It's me! Ya in there?"
A small smile crossed Walpurgis' lips and he began to walk over to the door. "Yes, Miss Hartman, I'm here. I'll get the door, one moment." As he reached for the door, it suddenly slammed open, and the rocket was knocked into the wall.
Erika stood in the doorway, laughing. "Ah, ya don't have to! I can get the door just fine!" The officer blinked, noting she didn't see Walpurgis. "...Dr. Lothar?" Confused, she turned to Zinnia. "Hey, pigtails! Ya seen the doctor around? Thought I heard him just now, too..." She gazed around the cabin.

"Umm," Zinnia said, eyes wider than usual. She pointed with her free hand toward poor Walpurgis by the door.
She hadn't expected Miss Hartmann to be quite so... boisterous. It didn't seem to fit a police officer.
Zyk blinked and tried to adjust to the sudden loud noises. He was still trying to get the hang of "seeing" double, using both his vision and excellent hearing.

Erika turned in the direction the girl pointed and laughed. "Hey, what're ya doin' on the floor, there? Ya drunk or somethin'?" She smirked. "Not like I should be talkin' or nothin'!" She roared with laughter again.
Grabbing Walpurgis by the hand, she dragged him to his feet. "Hey?" She began to shake him. "Oiii! Say somethin'!"
"....it's good to see you, too, Miss Hartmann..."
She laughed again, harder this time. "Always so gloomy when I come see ya after drinking! Ha!" She clapped him on the back, and he stumbled forward. Getting cautiously to his feet, Walpurgis turned back to the officer.
"You didn't seem quite as... inebriated... on the phone." He clutched at his pounding head. The officer giggled. "I may have had one or seven drinks on the way."
"Please tell me you didn't drive."
She turned a stern glance upon him, pouting. "What, n' get a tongue lashing by Ms. By-the-books? Forget that! I walked." The officer turned to Zinnia. "So, ya like 'em with pig tails, Dr. Lothar?" She snickered.
Walpurgis sighed. "As I explained on the phone, there is nothing of the sort. I just helped her golbat, that's all."
Hartmann laughed again. "Well, what about me? Ya like me?"
"You're drunk."
"I'm not askin' cuz I'm drunk, silly! Though I am drunk." She laughed again. "Doesn't matter, wouldn't remember yer answer tomorrow anyways! Alright, pigtails, let's go!

"Ummmm, okay?" Zinnia said, looking to Walpurgis for help. She didn't think that she'd be staying with a drunkard. What kind of officer was this Ms. Hartmann?
Still, she was comforted by the knowledge that she had the entire Z Team with her if she ran into trouble. She doubted she'd find any trouble beyond awkwardness, however-- but that was bad enough.
"Thank you, Dr. Lothar," she said to Walpurgis. She'd said it a lot, but she didn't think the words would ever properly convey her gratitude.

Walpurgis shrugged. "She's like this, but she's a nice person. She'll keep you safe."
"'Like this'? So mean, Dr. Lothar~!" She laughed as she said his name. "Dr. Lothaaaar! Lotharr!" She laughed again, continuing to test out his name as if it was a toy.
Walpurgis shook his head. "Do me a favor, Miss Hartmann. When you get home, write yourself a note that Zinnia isn't a burglar, and then get some sleep." He paused. "You know what? Let me write the note."
Scrawling the memo on a piece of paper, Walpurgis handed it to Zinnia. "I'm not sure she'll remember anything about tonight, so keep this close by."
