The corners of her lips turned slightly upwards as she attempted to smile, though the effect was kind of ruined by her sniffling and red, watery eyes. She shook her head quickly, but it took her a few moments before she could follow that up with coherent--albeit shaky--speech.
"N-no no, it's not...your fault either. I just...didn't want to make this too...awkward. But I did."
She made a face, through her silly expression soon smoothed out into something more solemn. Eva had hoped to handle this situation in a quiet and serious manner, but it was clear that she had let her emotions get the best of her. Maybe it was the fact that it was Gale, someone who she considered one of her most precious friends, that had upset her so greatly.
But what was done was done, and here they were, with the opportunity of a second chance. Rocking to the side, she lightly bumped his shoulder with hers before turning to smile at him, one that finally reached her eyes. "I'd...like that."
"I...thank you, Gale. Thank you for listening...and for not...brushing me off with a lunatic." She emitted a light laugh, and then sighed. "After everything is said and done, I'm just grateful that you're here. Safe. Alive."

She looked so terribly sad. Gale wanted to reach out and hug her, but he was under the distinct impression that it would be too forward - at least, for him, and maybe because she remembered and he did not, it would be too hard.
This was bloody frustrating. How could he not remember her?
"You're not a lunatic," he said, shaking his head so that the pale strands of blonde and white fell across his forehead in messy streaks. "You're not. I'm the one who messed everything up by forgetting, but nothing you've said or done has ever constituted you to be a loser."
Gale's expression softened.
"Yes, I'm alive," he said quietly, and he liked that she was smiling - smiling for real, even if her eyes were still watery, even if he could still see that pain beneath it.
"We're alive," he corrected softly.

"A lot has happened," She pointed out, her voice soft as she playfully bumped his shoulder again. "And we're both in the dark as to how exactly you lost your memories. I don't think it's fair for you to blame yourself for anything, you know?" And besides that, what was done was done. It was still going to be a bit of a struggle for her to fully accept what had happened but...she would move on eventually, so she didn't want Gale to dwell on it too much either. This was especially true if he was feeling guilty, which she had caught hints of in his voice and his expression.
His correction surprised her, blue eyes widening slightly as she cocked her head at him. There was a moment of pause, and then she smiled, leaning back and letting out a quiet sigh.
"I promised I'd protect you, you know," She murmured, though her smile faded suddenly, brows creasing as she lifted a hand and pressed her fingers to her temples, "I...I can't remember...when, or the exact circumstances--there are some holes in my memory too--but the what I can clearly remember is that one promise."

He knew this, knew that he always took the blame for things, but that was what he did; that was what he had ingrained in his mind for so long. No one else would take the blame, which meant that someone would eventually have to stand up.
Gale felt his heart constrict in his chest.
I will protect you.
He couldn't remember her, not at all, but there was a surge of protectiveness that washed over him all the same, and Gale turned to lean closer to Eva and press a quick kiss to her cheek. The gesture startled him, but he did not regret it.
"I can't remember you," he said. "But I can still be there to protect you as well."

The sudden gesture surprised her and she lifted a hand to touch her cheek, turning to stare at Gale with wide eyes. After she finally let the action sink in, she felt her tensed muscles suddenly relax, a familiar warmth flooding through her.
"Yes," She agreed, her voice hushed as her lips pulled upwards, "We can watch out for one another out there on the battlefield. You're still most definitely one of my most precious friends."
Eva leaned forward to return his chaste kiss with one of her own, pressing her lips briefly against his forehead. When she drew away, she heard a long-drawn out--albeit relieved--sigh from within her head. She had almost forgotten that Chara's presence was ever steady.
Feel better?
"Mmhm," She answered, lifting a hand to touch her head as her expression became at ease, "Much better." Gaze flickering back to Gale, Eva pushed herself back onto her feet and brushed herself off.
"I took up so much of your time! I guess I should probably head back now but...thank you. Truly and sincerely, thank you for...um...well, talking with me and putting up my hysterics." What had been meant to be a genuine and heartfelt thanks just came out sounding kind of silly instead, but it was the best that Eva could do.

He felt a sudden rush of embarrassment for doing something so intimate with someone he had only just met - but then he remembered that Eva had said they were close friends, and perhaps this wasn't so bad after all.
Most precious friends. It was strange to think that because he could not remember, but as Eva gently pressed a kiss to his forehead, Gale felt something in his stomach, something akin to reassuring. He did not feel uncomfortable around her, only uncertain, but somehow this felt as though it were right.
<< Everything will be okay. >>
I hope so.
Gale looked up at Eva, his cheeks slightly flushed, and also stood, brushing off his pants. "You weren't anything to put up with," he said quietly. "You were...quite nice."
There was a small pause.
"Thank you for...bearing with me."
