She looked up at Buddingtonite, first with a smile, then with concern, and she brought her face into his chest, nodding fervently. She smiled at him again. "I won't tell! You can trust me okay? I won't let anything bad happen to you." She sighed as he caressed her hair. It felt so soft...so nice. He really couldn't be a murderer, right? Painite made him do it! He was good! He had to be.

"But what should I do?" Afraid, concerned, she looked at him. "I mean, I still like my friends. Maybe they're just confused? Unaware? And, no offense, my dear, but I definitely don't want to serve general Painite--especially if she ordered you to do something like the carnival..."

And she hurt Zia, and Zia was good! Or maybe not? Everything seemed so confusing. She just wanted to relax in Buddingtonite's arms and forget the bruises, scratches, threats, fizzling orchid petals, petrified rose, that afternoon in the park...

She sighed.

"Is there ever a clear right answer?"

BLARG WAI /U/ MAKE MEDEA SO FEELS?

It wasn't often that Buddingtonite wanted to just let his defenses drop and relish what was undoubtedly a heartwarming moment like this, but now was different. The biggest hurdle of the night was cleared and while his landing wasn't as smooth as he would have wanted it, he was relieved that they were able to avoid an all out fight tonight. He didn't feel like fighting, and in truth, he didn't want to bring himself to hurt her.

He wanted to take comfort in her promise, but it was impossible. She couldn't be there all of the time and he was likely to be harmed by one of her allies (and vice versa), but still, it was the sentiment that counted. It almost made him regret... that they were on opposing sides.

He didn't think ill of her confession, and he answered with complete truth, "I understand. They are your friends, just as the Negaverse is my family, and while there are one or two that entice fear from me, I can imagine that turning you back on them would be difficult. Especially if they sought to harm you for it."

Breaking away wouldn't be easy. Perhaps he would simply have to discover these friends of hers and find ways of driving a wedge between them, or weaken their hold on her. Or, perhaps allow them to protect her from those he could not defend her from. He pushed the thought to the back of his mind, though he wondered how she would react if he admitted the truth. That it was fear of Painite that caused his decision... that led him into the Negaverse?

That thought was immediately shot down, and he covered any of is own fears with a comforting smile. "I would not worry about Painite, but should you ever see her, steer clear. Perhaps if I move up the ranks and be an equal to her, maybe even surpass her, I can make sure she never harms you."

It wasn't necessarily an empty promise, but rather, a difficult one to make. But it was one that he would try for. He wondered what kind of punishment would await him for defending a Senshi from another officer, if his punishment for defending a civilian from one of his own was what caused this moment of vulnerability in the first place.

For Medea, he was willing to risk it. He gave a sigh of his own, before admitting, "There hardly ever is in war, I'm afraid. If there was, then maybe we'd be spending more time sharing sweets and nice little stories instead? Got to admit, I rather like the sound of that."

"Thank you for teaching me. Thank you for understanding." Medea squeezed and pulled away. "The thought of your protection is enough for now." She smiled. "You are very kind, Captain, and it's a shame that war stops us from sharing such happy things. A peace would be so much easier. Anything but this killing..." She slightly frowned. "But I'll see you again? I'll stop by your friend's candy shop for sure. Maybe I'll see you?" She laughed. "Hopefully your friend will put in a good word for me!"

She could never mention Buddingtonite's name again. If Zia asked about him, she would brush it off, ask "Who?", pretend they never met or that he scorned her and she couldn't stand him. It felt a little sad to confine her true thoughts to her diary, but if protected him, well, so be it. He mattered more than sharing crushes and daydreams with her White Moon colleagues.

She picked up the box and sealed on its lid.

"Most of all--" She approached him. "--thank you for trusting me."'

Blushing, smiling, she pecked his cheek and dashed into the night.

"I'm not called Buddy for no reason, my dear. I am hear to listen, should you ever need an ear," Buddingtonite said, not really meaning to brush off her thanks but perhaps a little too guilt ridden to accept it so willingly. He tried to push these feelings aside, keeping up his act for the young lady, his friend, his... strange confidant. He kept a pleasant front forward, as he gave a confident nod. "Absolutely. We'll likely see each other again real soon..."

For that he was certain, though if it'd be a good encounter or an ill-fated one, he could not say for sure. He's hope for the best, but expect the worse... that was just something he could not do, but he'd simply have to cross that bridge when he got there. He just hoped it wouldn't be a painful one for the both of them.

When she mentioned his 'friend', he placed a finger to his lips, as though he wanted her to keep quiet, and though he knew he could have used this to his advantage... part of him felt compelled to speak out. "By the way, that goes to him too. Don't mention my name to him, for his own safety. Simply say someone advised you to make a visit. He's quite dear to me, just like you, and I wouldn't wish anything to happen to him."

He was already trying to clean up one mess- he couldn't afford to have another. He's surrender the chance of learning her identity, if it meant to keep the both of them safe. He let her go, knowing that she would keep her promise, and when she turned around and pecked him on the cheek, he nearly lost it. He could say nothing, and never was he so happy to see someone leave as he was just now, as the moment she disappeared into the night, box of candy in hand, he felt something wet and warm running down his cheeks. With no one to chide him or explain himself to, he simply brought a hand over his eyes and tried to stop them.

"Stop it, you fool. You're a grown man and a proud captain of the Negaverse... you cannot afford to cry!" Buddingtonite growled to himself, and before he could risk Medea coming back or someone else finding him in this state, he simply fled, using the one ability that had no let him down thus far. He'd teleport home, and force himself to get over this... damned affliction that threatened to overcome him. And what better way to fight this than with good, old bourbon. "I'm not weak. I'm not... right?"
