Baie sighed as she tried to catch up with her niece, Dina and Nahmba. The pride now had two males with dark manes and two exceedingly pale ones. Baie’s preferences were well-known and she hadn’t wasted time to moan about the new addition to the pride despite being somewhat glad that someone had finally sent Kamal on his way. Her eyes fell on her pale daughter briefly before she rubbed her side silently with Buna.
She sighed dramatically and waited for Nahmba’s reply, her opinions requiring no words. If at some point she decided to have a second litter, she would only consider Surtak and Gakere as potential fathers but she wasn’t be opposed to having a few more good-looking males around. Why did that Kamal have to lose to such a male with a white – white!- mane?
Thuli said nothing. She didn’t speak up, she didn’t move. Frowning, she just stood unnaturally on a rock, glaring at the new male with intense blue eyes filled with anger and disappointment. How was it that they’d finally gotten rid of the flea-bitten Kamal but managed to gain a male that was almost as bad in terms of her own breeding prospects? Was it really that hard to find a strong male with a dark mane that would stick around long enough to have cubs before she turned old and barren? Her eyes turned to Surtak, who was becoming a better prospect with each passing day. She really just wanted a large, proven male with a dark mane. Someone not related to her. Thuli was starting to think she'd have to go find one herself and convence him to challenge an Inselelo. Her eyes threw Nguvu a quick glare before they returned to their former task of piercing a hole through the new Inselelo.

Toboa let out a brief but warm purr at Han's comforting touch. The little lioness could be a sweetheart, and Toboa felt lucky that she had such loving members of her extended family to make up for her mother's coldness.
A noise behind the two lionesses made Toboa's ears twitch. She turned her head slightly and caught sight of two more pride members - Dina and her daughter Chazama - approaching, albeit slowly. The dark lioness picked up on Chazama's hesitation and decided not to call out; that would probably only make the bright Umzingeli more uncomfortable.
She turned her head back to the new Inselelo just as Nguvu, the former newbie, greeted him. Toboa bowed her head slightly to show the mountain of a male her respect, but the expression on her face showed her friendly connection with Nguvu and his sisters with no trace of 'reverence'. "Good day, Nguvu," she mewed quietly, not wanting to interrupt the Inselelo's introduction.

He hadn't expected family to be a touchy subject, but both females seemed bothered to different degrees. Was it something he had said? It was hard for him to figure out the reason so he concentrated on keeping the family ties straight. Right, so Toboa was Gakere's half-sister and Nehanda's aunt. It wasn't easy to see the family resemblance... Nehanda's mother was called Baie'mooi, and Jasiri didn't recognize the name. But then he hadn't been introduced to many females. He was fairly sure that he'd never be able to fully understand the convoluted family ties, and he thanked his lucky stars that he probably wouldn't have to. As far as he knew he wasn't related to a single female in the pride, so as long as one was interested and available they were fair game.
"Oh," he said, "It must be nice to have so much family around."
Some of the females were on the move, circling closer, and Jasiri enjoyed the attention. He seemed to be blissfully unaware that many of the stares were fuelled by fear or annoyance and not admiration. A large male approached to greet him, and Toboa saved him from having to make a guess at his identity. Yes, Nguvu. The other Inselele. That would have been his first guess. It shouldn't be too hard to keep track of the males, but the fact that there were males that stuck around without officially being leading males made it harder. Jasiri hadn't fully understood the Enda and Ahluke ranks from the brief explanation he'd been offered.
"Nguvu," he said and nodded to the other male. "I'm guessing we'll get to spend a lot of time together in the future." He assumed that the other male must be a good fighter, and he hoped that they'd be able to work together to keep rogue males and other threats away.
He smiled and nodded to the white and gold female that had snuck up behind Toboa and Han.

Predictably, Wodi could not resist a gathering where Surtak was involved. The fact that it was also centered around their newest Inselelo was a bonus, as it could potentially give her more fodder to harass her very favorite Umholi with. And, to be honest, she really was curious about this 'Jasiri,' even if he did have a white mane...not that she was interested in what traits he might or might not pass on, although she would be surprised if any of the females bothered with him other than to pester him, not with Gakere and Surtak around.
...speaking of pestering and Surtak. The little lioness sidled forward, wearing a familiar, cheeky grin. "Ooh, so this is the one who saved us from the fleas once and for all?" Wodi's voice was thick with admiration - and sarcasm. "It's about time someone did."
Personally, she was pretty sure she could have taken Kamal, but then, Wodi was pretty sure she could take anyone.

So was it a good fight?
Nahmba had been so busy chattering away that she'd completely missed Buna's approached. The sudden voice did not startle her, and Nahmba turned swiftly on her two front feet to better address the dark female.
"Oh, of course!" She replied, tongue lulling off great effigies of pride. "I imagine it must have been, with all the dust they created."
The pale female's mouth was open to speak again when her head raised high and she spied two familiar golden figures coming towards them. "Dina!" she happily exclaimed. "And Chazama." As if everyone in the pride didn't know who they were.
Nahmba swayed on their feet as they neared. "Have you heard about the new Inselelo?" Of course they had. "He's just over there. Calls himself Jasiri. What do you suppose it means?"
A small chirring sound came from the back of her throat as she caught sight of Baie's face. "You should give this one a chance, Baie! He is very handsome."
-
If three males gathered in one place were not an indicator of a pridal shift, then nothing was.
Surtak eyed the approaching Nguvu with narrowing eyes. The dark form of his muzzle began to stretch taught, and when the Inselelo finally produced himself, the Umholi's lip raised. A voice far too deep for a lion too small rumbled out in a growl.
The dark male never lost an opportunity to keep the pale Inselelo in his place.
-
Feeling the energy of the air start to stir, mix, become increasingly volatile, Matifa sought solace wherever she could. Her sister was not far away, the rust sunset coat easily discernable against the simplicity of so many others.
She padded her way over as if the ground were covered in thorns. Body bumping against Thulisile, she rejoined the look towards the Inselele, ears swiveling, head bobbing with uncertainty.
He was almost too polite. "He seems. . . " she began, looking for a word, and finding none of them were appropriate. Talking bad about an Inselele could only bring them bad luck, right?

Meepfur (( Yes, Wodi gets her own response post! )) Males aside, nothing quite got under Surtak's skin like the white and black patched female. The growl did not cut short, but rather grew into a low rumble, as if Wodi's presence reaffirmed his need to assert himself.
"Wodi." Her voice made his jaw clench and still she continued to speak.
The Umholi's eyes shifted to Jasiri, exposing a great deal of yellow as they did. "He has not been proven flealess." Either Surtak had not noticed the sarcasm, or he felt it suitable to comment regardless.

Toboa's ear twitched at Jasiri's response to Nguvu. He was new, so it was understandable, but he clearly didn't know the way the pride worked. The males tended to give each other space most of the time. Although perhaps the Inselele would be different; she didn't think there had ever been more than one at a time in her life. And since they were both rather pale - especially their manes - there was a good chance that they might stick together to assert their strength.
Dismissing the thoughts as impertinent, she allowed her focus to shift to Wodi as the white lioness padded mischievously toward Surtak. She watched the exchange, caught halfway between anxiety at the Umholi's very obvious tension and amusement at the Busisa's total lack of caring. Toboa wouldn't admit it out loud but she had always liked Wodi's attitude - it was endlessly funny in her eyes. Her whiskers twitched but she kept her mirth silent since Surtak didn't share her view.

Nguvu nodded to the lionesses who greeted him "Hello." His voice was a little like Surtaks, only it matched his huge appearance. Though big, Nguvu did not appear to be to threatening. His nature was fairly jovile and his mannerisms did not pin him as a creature to be feared. He eyed Jasiri once more. "I'm sure we shall, if we need to. You must have fought well. We could perhaps make a good team in ensuring the protection of the pride." Nguvu did not object entirely to forming alliances with the other males in the pride. He stretched out his body a little to tower ever so slightly higher than usual. Turning his eyes towards Surtak, he bowed gently. He had a great deal of respect for the male, but was unsure as to why he had taken such a dislike to him. Perhaps it was the nature of his joining, being found with dead crocodiles, after all, could have been a little different to their usual system. "Good day, Surtak."

Ever so slow on her approach, Chazama did manage to get a good bit of a ways closer before maneuvering herself into a good position to spy on the new inselelo from between Toboa and Han. Oh, wow. He was quite bright wasn't he? With that golden coat and white mane Chazama mused at how similar their coloring was. And with how friendly his words seemed to be, he didn't seem like one of those males that would be chasing them away any time soon. Oh, good! Just as Wodi strolled up and procured a growl from Surtak, Chazama trotted up to Toboa and Han, bumping the two lionesses affectionately before taking a place on the opposite side of Toboa, to allow the two to remain next to each other. "He sounds friendly enough", she whispered to the two next to her, unsure if anyone else would be able to hear.
And though she had come to greet and inspect the new male, her pale eyes were drawn to the rumbling umholi, as per usual. It took the lioness a second to realize she had done this on reflex and quickly returned her gaze to Jasiri, a happy little smile now on her maw. She may not be next to her mother, but with the other lionesses, Surtak, and the fiesty Wodi around, Chazama was feeling much more comfortable. Nguvu was there too, she noticed. Hmm, so many males!
Dina certainly picked up the pace at Nahmba's happy call to her, ears forward and a comfortable smile to grace her features. "Nahmba", she returned affectionately, giving the little pale lioness a slight a bump from her head as she halted next to her. "Of course I've heard", Dina smirked. "You've been very busy today, everyone keeps telling me about him." Not that Dina minded, she liked a good bit of gossip, especially if it led her to the source so easily. "What a question! I'd imagine only his mother would know", she laughed a little at the thought. For all they knew, 'Jasiri' meant 'little furball'.
It was at this point that Dina turned a curious eye on Buna and Baie, the two were very vocal about their opinions on males so Dina didn't have to do much guess work this time around. Nonetheless, Dina's disposition remained friendly as she offered them both bob of her head in greeting. "I haven't seen him yet, is he really as bright as everyone says?" She found it hard to believe his coat glimmered in the sun, even if that was what someone had told her. It was amusing how gossip could get so far from the truth in such a small amount of time.

"He has far less fleas than Kamal, and that in itself is a blessing!" The pale Busisa stepped from the grass, giving the new Inslelo a once-over. Far too bright for her liking... Her gaze shifted over to Surtak, amusement in her eyes as she saw how Wodi's presence got to him. While a Busisa like herself, Wodi had already lent to the pride her genes in the form of strong children. In fact, as far as Mhisani knew, she herself was the only Busisa who hadn't yet. All so far had been by Umholi. Her eyes were on an Inslelo, a lion that while he bore relation to two pride females, bore no relation to far too much of the pride. As far as she knew, though, this new Inslelo held no relation to the pride, either, which was itself a blessing. Hopefully both stuck around long enough to have at least some cubs.
She circled the new Inslelo with a good enough distance between them in case things went south, looking him over. "So... Jasiri... Do YOU have family?"

"It wouldn't be very smart of him to act any other way at this point," Toboa replied to Chazama, also keeping her voice low. "He'd have a lot of trouble making friends and wooing females if he behaved like a baboon." She whispered her last remark through a playful smirk, leaning close to the white and orange lioness and returning her nudge.
Her attention was finally distracted from the exchange between Wodi and Surtak when Mhisani arrived. Toboa's whiskers twitched and she purred in amusement at the Busisa's comment about fleas; being one of the many lionesses that had been infested because of Kamal's lack of hygiene, Toboa found it difficult to be sad about his departure. Toboa chuckled at Mhisani's question - because it was just like pale lioness to be so bold, and because she was amused at her own reaction. Such a double standard for her to become protective when Jasiri expressed interest in finding a mate, yet to be totally at ease when the pride's lionesses considered him as one. And yet she was okay with it. It's not like she could change the way she felt, so why feel guilty? Instead, she waited, ears pricked forward with interest, for the Inselelo to answer.

Jasiri could feel the tension in the air, but since he wasn't familiar with the pride dynamics he couldn't figure out if it had been something he said, or if it had something to do with the lions and lionesses that had approached. Perhaps a mixture of both. After some initial hesitation many of the pride members were approaching at once. He smiled at the black and white female, Wodi, was it? He had either missed the tone of sarcasm or chose to ignore it. But her comment about fleas confused him. What? And now Surtak questioned his flea-status too? He kept smiling, but his eyes had lost some of his previous confidence.
"I don't have fleas," he protested, but you could almost hear the unspoken 'do I?'. Jasiri took pride in his well-groomed coat, and so far he had managed to go through life without encountering pesky pest infestations. The thought of bugs crawling around in his beautiful fur made his skin itch and he resisted the urge to scratch himself.
Toboa, Han and the yellow and white female were whispering, and he was sure he had heard one of them say something that sounded like 'fleas'. His ear twitched slightly as he managed to pick up the word 'baboon' from the whispers. What was this?
Another tan female spoke up, and her words didn't exactly calm him. Kamal, wasn't that the lion he'd beaten to get in? If Kamal had fleas and he had touched him... Ew. Ew, ew, ew! Could fleas jump over during a fight? What if they could? Jasiri was sure that he could feel tiny bugs crawling on him. Or was the itching just his mind playing tricks on him?
"Um..." he said, "Not really, no. I haven't seen my mother since I left when my mane started to grow in, and I haven't seen my littermates since then either. I assume my sister stayed with mother."
((Will post with Buna later...))

Well well, someone was grumpy! Wodi's grin held steady as she observed the dark male. "Surtak," she returned, twitching her tail behind her. "Then you should have checked him. No one wants fleas again."
It was hard not to snicker while she said it. She didn't really think Surtak should hold the other male down and look him over for fleas, although it was a terribly amusing image. She just wanted to ruffle his feathers, as usual.Ukuthula had stalked over shortly after her mother, just in time to catch mention of fleas. Ugh. She remembered having fleas, and didn't want them ever again. While Wodi focused her attention on hassling Surtak, Thula was much more interested in their new Inselelo, since he was new and all. She caught his name when Mhisani asked a question, and frowned.
"Jasiri, really? That sounds like a girl's name," she decided, addressing no one in particular.

As more and more lions started to converge on the spot, and more and more verbal jabs were thrown, Han began to feel sorry for the male. It wasn't his fault he had been born with such a pale mane, after all, no more than it was her fault that she had been born ill. She was quiet and looked away from the surrounding females and a few of the males that had shown up. Had they been in smaller company she might have laughed off the slurs and reassured him that they meant no harm, but now...there were so many here she didn't want to step out of line.
Lifting her head, she spotted her mother not too far from where she stood, and she wondered if she'd be disappointed if she stood up for Jasiri. As it was, she kept her mouth closed for the time being, but did offer him a sympathetic look. She knew what it was like to be teased, although it had been when she had finally found the strength to leave her den under the watchful eye of her mother, and then her siblings. Other cubs didn't know she had been sick, and teased her for her lack of energy and poor pouncing skills.
Granted, she knew none of the teasing was done with malice, but her childhood tormentors hadn't done it with bad intentions, either. It was a trial by fire, seeing if he was tough enough to fight for his place, but then humble enough to know that the females really ran this pride, and he was there for protection and children.

Toboa felt her heart tighten a little at Jasiri's answer. She supposed it was good that the new Inselelo had grown up in a society like their own; it might make it easier for him if he ever had sons. But she couldn't help thinking about the day her brother had left - and the way it had changed her mother. Not to mention the thought of having to do the same some day..
This is not the time, nor the place. Toboa berated herself silently. Shaking her head slightly she forced herself to pay attention in time to catch some snippy - and rather uncalled for - remarks aimed at Jasiri. While she was very interested in getting to know the new Inselelo, and testing his character was a part of that, it seemed a bit much to tease him about his name.
Toboa shrugged it off. Each lioness would go at the pale Jasiri in their own way, and she didn't intend to interfere provided things stayed at least a little amicable. Her fur pricked as tension rose beside her, and she turned her head to study Han. She didn't understand why, but the smaller lioness seemed upset. Why didn't matter; Toboa leaned closer until her flank was pressing gently against Han's. Gently, she started to purr, not loud enough for it to be audible, but enough that she hoped Han would feel it and be comforted.
