The battle won, Kari gazed along the shelves littered with an assortment of grails. She picked each one up and examined them. Her companions came forward to inspect them as well, offering questions and theories. Kari jumped as a voice filled her head. Looking around to see the other hadn't moved, she assumed she was the only one who could hear the voice and tried to calm herself, lest she worry them.
She had to drink from one of the grails... could reclaim what she lost, as long as she chose the right grail... but would lose herself if she chose wrong? Her determination wavered, fearful not only for herself, but for her companions. No, they had come this far, they couldn't stop now.
"I think we need to drink from one of these, but not all of them are safe," Kari called out, gaining everyone's attention. "I'll go first... if anything happens to me, you all need to get out of here."
"But-!" Maya started to shout, but Lira put a hand on her shoulder to stop her. "If that's your choice, then we'll trust you," the second girl replied with a small smile. "That's right, you've led us successfully this far, so we believe you'll make the right choice," Issac confirmed with a smile of his own. Edward, Roland, Luke, and finally Maya all gave a nod signifying that they too would trust her. "But we're not leaving you behind, you got that?" Issac continued, staring pointedly at the floor.
Kari could feel warmth welling up in her. Her companions cared about her and trusted her. She couldn't let them down. Walking down the line of goblets, she inspected each one once more. After a few minutes, she settled on the first one in the line. It was of a simplistic design, made of carved wood with pieces of stylized metal embedded on the outside for decoration, but something felt about it felt different from the rest.
Lifting the cup to her lips, she heard the others collectively hold their breath in anticipation. Quelling her hesitation, she tipped the grail up and downed its contents on one sip. Setting the cup down, she stood silently for a moment, waiting for something to happen.
"So how do you-!" Luke began to ask. He was cut off as Kari gasped and clutched at her chest. She felt hot. As the others gathered around in worry, Kari felt something 'click' inside her. A voice wafted through her mind.
You have chosen wisely. Something you've lost has been returned to you.As the voice faded, so did the burning feeling. Looking up, she absently realized her companions had been yelling at her for a response. "I... I'm fine," she replied hurriedly, "That was supposed to happen."
As soon as the words were out of her mouth, the weapon at her side became engulfed in flames. Everyone jumped back, but Kari just stared. It should have been burning her... but with was only slightly warm. Taking it in her hand, she watched as it started to change form. As quickly as it had started, the flames died down, revealing a simple wooden staff. It was a far cry from the ornate weapon she had earlier. Had this been what she lost?
