As Laurus sat there, her eye fell on a different sheet of paper. A C E G? Matching this new paper with the old, she turned back to the numerical pad and keyed in 0, 2, 4, 5. She waited for a breathless moment, ignoring the approaching figure. Then the door slid open.
She made it through in the nick of time. She slammed the door as hard as she could behind her, right as the shadowy form was about to catch up. Her heart beating madly at her core, she hoped it would be the last she saw of her pursuer, but she doubted it.

Laurus breathed deep as she got outside. Ducking under the cover of the trees, she helped herself to a moment of respite, then mustered up the courage to look behind herself once more. The shadowy form was there once more, following her steadily to the trees. How did he get out? She hadn't heard the door open. Whatever, that wasn't important right now. Getting away was.
The bridge looked rickety and old, but it was the only way out. She stepped along it as quickly as she could. She'd have preferred not to jump, but some of the gaps were too wide to walk. Halfway across, she landed hard on one jump. Too hard. Her foot went right through the wooden slat. She wrenched, then bit her lip. It was stuck for good.
Every moment she hesitated, the figure steadily came closer. Her fingers tightened around the hilt of her rusted dagger. Better the certain pain of amputation than the uncertain doom of letting her pursuer catch up.
She looked away as she began cutting. Even without looking, she would hardly be unaware of where she was cutting. It was sheer agony. Once wasn't enough. She had to keep on, she told herself through the flood of pain. Once more, and she was finally free to hobble across the bridge, ignoring the loud breath sounds from the figure following close on her heels.

You cannot escape forever, the Goddess had said.
Laurus's foot was regenerating, if slowly, with each hobbling step forward, but she didn't want to run anymore. Turning, a hiss of pain escaping between her teeth, she faced her follower.
She struck with her dagger, but she was too slow. The scissors cut in deep.
His face was drawn, pale beneath the black skin they both shared.
"You could have come to me. Do you know how worried we were?"
Silence.
"Whatever our differences -- and there have been many, I grant you -- we're still family."
She still said nothing.
"Did you really think I wouldn't help?"
"You are busy." A fact.
"And our grandfather isn't." They both knew he was. Busier than Albin, in fact, and farther away. Put this way, her choice was...
She retreated into silence once again. This time, as his eyes traveled over her face, his expression closed to hide his hurt at bay. She was sorry now. But now that she wanted to apologize, she couldn't find the words.
The blackened, disfigured body came closer. She resolved to struggle, but she froze as he put one hand on her head. A thudding sound grew louder and louder. It was her heart. But there was nothing she could do now.
"Don't worry," it cooed. (She could see vestiges of his appearance, but she couldn't bring herself to think of this twisted thing as her older brother.) "It only hurts once." A loud snip filled her ears. Then, true enough, she felt the pain just once before it disappeared.
"It's better this way. You'll see," she thought she heard it say as he walked off, her heart still beating. No, she didn't understand, didn't think she would given time. One more disagreement in a long series. It didn't matter this time. Her heart was gone, and she would soon be too.
