T H E x C H I L D Muriel had been more than happy when Esmerald had been married, then they’d moved into such a spacious home and even better news was abound. Esmeralda was pregnant. Muriel was truly quite happy and she looked forward to caring for the little one. So when Minerva was born and Esmeralda began to spend less and less time with her, Muriel found it a little less fun. This was why she asked Esme that day if they could have a teaching lesson, something they hadn’t had in a while. Esmeralda agreed and they settled at the back of the house near the water.
Esmeralda was a Peisio Dovaa and Muriel as a Peisio Khehora so it worked out great for them. Esme settled Minerva in the grass before sitting down herself. Muriel on the other hand lounged near Minerva to keep an eye on her and so that she could be near the water.
“Go ahead Muriel, try and bring over some water.” Esmeralda demonstrated by extending out her hand and pulled the water towards her; Minerva watched the floating water move past her with hands out stretched.
Muriel concentrated on the water; it floated up and then crashed back into the water.
“Just relax and let it flow to you. You need to feel the water not push it and try to bend it to your will.”
Again Muriel tried, this time getting the water out and towards her but she couldn’t keep it for long.
“It’s not working.”
“That’s because you’re distracted. Minerva come here please.” Minerva got up and wobbled over to her mother who caught her and sat her down on her lap holding her there. “Now stop worrying and concentrate. Bring water to Minerva.”
Again Muriel tried, this time getting the water half way to Minerva who clapped happily.
“I think you’d be a great mother Muriel if you ever found someone.”
The Orakor rolled her eyes at her bonded; Esmeralda’s children would be quite good enough for her. Muriel tried a few more times and was finally able to get water to Minerva. After that, Esmeralda sent her daughter again to distract her bonded as she practiced. It wasn’t the easiest exercise, but Esme really did want her bonded to be able to protect her daughter if it came to it. She was teaching her the easy stuff for now, but then they’d do a bit of sparring with the water and really see what Muriel could do. Muriel still had some growing to do, but she was on the right track.
“Well I think that’s it for today Muriel, next time we’re going to have a little battle. Maybe I’ll have Minerva fight you.”
“Very funny Esmeralda.”
“What? I’m sure Minnie would be able to best you in a duel.” The Dovaa was obviously kidding, but still it was funny to get a reaction out of Muriel. Muriel sent some water towards Esmeralda who easily deflected it.
“You’re going to need to do better than that if you want to best me in a dual.”

R E A D I N G x T E A C H E R Minerva was growing up so fast, she was talking now and Esmeralda was teaching her to read when she was home. Granted with Ekundayo missing much of the teaching had fallen to Muriel to do as well as the guardianship of Minerva when Esmeralda was called away. Since Esmeralda was close to her mastership the Peisio Dovaa was being called away much more often than usual, Muriel knew the strain it put on her Bonded and she could feel her worry for Ekundayo as well. Vilzun had also disappeared, and while Muriel liked him as she liked any other creature, she still missed the company.
“Minerva, come let’s go sit outside for your lesson. It’s quite nice out.”
Minerva complied as always with a smile on her face and raced Muriel outside. She tumbled in the long grass and giggled, rolling until Muriel caught up to her and sat her down.
“Which book did you decide upon?”
“Dragons! Mama always says this is the best book, one day I will pick my clan.”
Minerva sat herself down Indian style and set the book on her lap while Muriel also settled down next to her and peered at the open book.
“Alright go one now.”
“There are nine dragon clans that live up..on Magesc: Firani, Peisio, Ysali, Gaili, Ayrala, Aiskala, Kiandri, Diabi, and Aedaun. Each of these clans con..trols a diff..er..ent el..e..ment. The same elements used by the Dovaa race to exe… Exe…”
“Execute.”
“The same elements used by the Dovaa race to execute their plans. Magic, as the Dovaa con..si..der it, comes from the dragons and their clans. Why does papa kill dragons if that’s where magic comes from? Is that why Mama saves the dragons?”
“Well, people are greedy by nature. They invaded and took things from the dragons so the dragons began to fight back. Now they attack Magesciens and that is why people hunt them. One day Minerva you too will encounter dragons and you will see they are not friendly beings, you mother studies them from afar for a reason. Never forget Minerva, without the magic of the dragons the Dovaa would not be able to choose a clan.”
This made Minerva quiet as she contemplated Muriels words.
“How about we look at the different clans and see which ones might interest you?”
“Yes!”
“So first, there are the Ysali. What do they do?”
“They are plants, they are healers.”
“Then we have the Ayrala.”
“They are the air!”
“We have the Kiandri.”
“Electro dragons. I like them.”
Muriel watched Minerva as she looked over the Kiandri with large wondrous eyes. Could they possibly have a Kiandri child on their hands? Muriel smiled, she thought so.
“Then we have the Friani.”
“Hot hot hot dragons! Then we have Mama’s dragons! Pie so!”
“Yes fire and then the Piesio. Then it gets cold.”
“Aye sk ala! And then ROAR dragons!”
“Yes and then the Gaili, and finally we have light and dark. Do you know them.”
“Aye dun and diabi.”
“Your mother will be proud you know all your dragon clans.”
