Oh, the stallion was ever so kind! "Do..." Ah! Zahariel bowed her head, ashamed to ask such a question. "Do-- might you consider... being my friend? For... for just a little while? If it's not too much trouble?" Oh! How could she ask such an appallingly selfish thing? He would not wish to trouble himself so! "Only... you don't need to. I just... I liked the story." And she should like so much to hear many more. There was a tiny plea within her eyes as she watched him. A plea that she felt so ashamed to make. But oh, Zahariel was so lonely. Perhaps it wouldn't bother him too much to be her friend. Maybe he would accept her request. Maybe he would spend even just a little time with her. "I know you must be very busy." Everyone was always so busy, she knew. She was constantly under hoof. If only she could be just a little less needy, a little less... troublesome.

Ophiuchus had never met a soquili so desperate for companionship, for some sort of kindness. Oh, while he had once been a tender sort, while he had once desperately yearned to fit in, to be accepted within that desert, he had found himself at the receiving end of judgement and criticism. He had been made an example of, had been unwanted, and it had turned him bitter. He was not the sort to seek out attention, even in these new lands; he found himself to be an endless observer, and not a main player. That was probably for the best, really, for he was a freak among freaks. A beak where others had a velvet muzzle, claws where others had hooves, a serpant tail with feathers, while others had hair. He was sorely out of place among the Kawani, for even his brethren ulun'suti and hippogryphs were of . . . pure varieties. He had grown cold and bitter, but Zaharial? She seemed tender, innocent, and kind.

It warmed his heart as much as it pained him. Life should not be so cruel. He had never had a friend, but he would . . . he would accept this offer. Zaharial seemed not to mind that he was such a mish-mashed soquili. How could he refuse such a request? So it was, the typically aloof stallion gave a little bow. That was the right thing to do in these lands, wasn't it? "I would be honored to be your friend," he spoke quietly, though a wisp of a smile involuntarily crossed his features. "For as long as you might wish it." Ophiuchus gave a little swish of his tail, purple eyes trying not to show his own, inner delight. This was a first for him, and though he knew she might end their friendship at any time, he would secretly, hesitantly, delight in it until that day. "I am not as busy as you may think. I . . . I have no home, no herd. I roam and observe this new land--no more, no less. You . . . You are the first to wish anything of me, and I am happy to give."

Zahariel could hardly believe her ears. He... he wanted to be her friend. Her very own friend! She had... she had never had a friend before. "... D-Do you really? Can we really be friends? Are you sure? It's... it's all right if you don't want to be friends," she hurried to rushed to assure him, her tail wagging slightly with her excitement. Oh! Oh, could he really mean it? Maybe... maybe the star had heard her plea. Maybe... maybe she wouldn't have to be so very alone. "If... if you think you wouldn't mind. If it's not too much trouble." She knew that her appearance was disgraceful. Her mother had made very sure of that. He... must be very wonderful, indeed, to be willing to befriend her. "May we please be friends?" He had already said yes.

She couldn't believe it. It was too nice. Too wonderful. It... was lovely. She wanted to believe it. But nice things... didn't tend to happen. It seemed implausible that this one was. Yet... yet, oh, how she hoped that it might be true! "Why wouldn't anyone wish anything of you?" she asked, a little confused. "You are so... so very kind." If he wanted to be her friend, Zahariel would be his friend for... for as long as he could bear it. She knew it would be hard. He would... undoubtedly find it to be a trial, as her mother had. But perhaps for a little while... for a little while, they might be friends. And oh, how sweet it would be to have a friend. A kind friend who might tell her stories. She'd never heard anything as beautiful or as sad as the story he had just told her.

Sometimes she imagined what it would be like to have a friend. To have someone to talk to, to confide in. Sometimes she liked to pretend, for even a moment, that she had someone to share things with. There were so many moments in life that seemed empty without another's presence. Ah, but some of those would undoubtedly forever be out of her reach. She knew herself to be a drain on others. She... was also not at all comely. Her dark hide would drive away even the most dedicated of admirers. As a foal she'd learned that very lesson. Her mother... had known. Had... made it clear how unwelcome the little filly had been. It was better this way, really. Better to know. Better to... to not let her heart get carried away.

Still, a part of Zaha wanted to be carried away. A part of her wanted to be swept away, to... to be in love. Maybe someday. Maybe someday there would be a Desert Wind for her.

Clearly,it was destiny that the two of them met. The suti'gryph that had no friends, from a foreign land, and the ebony mutant, who also had no friends. He couldn't possibly fathom why such a creature as her could be in such a spot -- she was kind of soul and generous of spirit, eve to a complete stranger. She had prayed upon a star to find some sort of companionship, so desperate was she to be valued and appreciated. How had the spirits been so unkind to one such as she? Ophiuchus could almost wonder the same for himself, but he knew that he was a freak of nature. He had not been pure, and his family had been purist; while there had been shame for his mother, she could still remedy her shame by taking on a pure mate, if one could be found. For Ophiuchus, there was no fix-- he wore his shame on feathered wings, with a feathered tail.

"It would be no trouble at all,m'lady," he spoke, giving a small dip of his head. He had some form of manners, though they were rusty. "I have no friends either, for you shall be my first." It seemed that it was an auspicious night. Perhaps that star of hers was working more magic than either of them realized. He didn't mind, of course. . . but maybe these foreign stars had more power to them than those he had gazed upon in the deserts.

When Zaharial asked why no one would wish any of him,the stallion gave a small swish of his tail, and a shrug of his great wings. "I was unwelcome in my homelands, due to . . my appearance, due to my blood. I am a mix of a monster, I'm afraid, and have tainted my families line and ruined their honor. No one ever asked much of me because . . . as far as they were concerned, I am unworthy to be asked." It didn't pain the stallion to speak of such a thing, though he was ashamed to admit such a story. There was no pain to be had after all these years, nothing but bitterness and regret. It was what it was, whether it was true or not. it was, perhaps, easier in these lands, far from his deserts. . . At least down here, he was as much a freak as anyone; nothing but a stranger. It was easier to be a stranger unknown than to be the family embarrassment.

"Ah, but I assure you -- I shall be as good a friend to you as I am able. If you do not mind being the friend of a monster." And hopefully mind she would not! Ophiuchus was as desperate for some sort of kindness, some sort of amiability, some sort of validation as the mare he had met. He would be a kind and true sort, loyal and devoted, if she would but allow him.
