Prologue - Start!

The small fishing village of Sun's Reach.

While not a major landmark for the Crescent Peninsula, it serves as one of the few most important trading posts within the Gold Bay. Its chief exports stem from both the yield of the sea and the nearby mountain ridge provide excellent raw materials that are shipped to virtually all of the sovereign nations within the Peninsula.

Recently, there have been more and more skirmishes by the goblin tribes of the southern mountain range against the palisades of Sun's Reach. The militia have held thus far, but they have reported that the goblins are increasing in number and their attacks are becoming more frequent and intense. The tribes have historically been disparate and involved in numerous civil wars among their own kind but they seem to have become unified in purpose for some inexplicable reason.

Acting Councilman Gladhart has sent out a plea to all neighboring lands that Sun's Reach is in desperate need of helpful souls to hold back the onslaught from the dark horde and find out what has brought these monsters together.

You have traveled here and now arrive at the Drunken Sailor Tavern in Sun's Reach.

There are two militia stationed outside the tavern. Many of the other patrons are injured as the fighting outside has continued unabated since you arrived in town. You may investigate the tavern, visit the town square or head to the palisades.

Revlis came here with nothing more on his mind than a hot meal and a quiet rest before heading home. But he knows that rest won’t come while good men are fighting for their homes and lives. The weary elf approaches the two militia.

He is young and perhaps a bit too lean; overall unimposing. A cursory glance would mark him “green,” but a little patient observation will reveal that something about him-- perhaps his rough-hewn shoulder-length black hair, the haunted look in his green eyes, or maybe just the slight wary hunch to his posture-- says he has a story to tell… if he wanted to.

“Greetings, friends,” he hails the two outside the tavern, his tone more than sufficiently grim for the situation at hand. “It seems we have some trouble on our hands. May I ask what’s going on here? Is there any way I can be of assistance?”

Fish, the stench was enough to make Ezarix scowl as he went through the market. None of the wares seemed to catch his interest as the various venders would call out how wonderful their selections and how fine their goods.

Continuing on his way towards the tavern he paused, hovering his boot off the ground. He glanced down to see a dead rat, of which he was about to step on and took care not to do so.

There were three men standing out front of the tavern whom Ezarix had pushed past to get inside, and made his way to the bar.

Litaria shifted uneasily as she walked through the town. In a sudden fit of--something, she really wasn't sure what, but it certainly wasn't intelligence--she had decided that being a magic shop assistant was too boring and quit, in favor of heading to Sun's Reach for adventure.

Now, as she was faced with the realities of war, with injured soldiers all around, her previous boring existence seemed more and more appealing. There was no turning back now, though, so she kept walking. A sign to the right caught her eye, and she stopped. It marked a tavern--one called the Drunken Sailor. She was sure in happier times it would have been filled with just that, but now the patrons who entered and exited tended to be sober in spirit if not in mind, and just as many were soldiers as sailors.

"A drink," Litaria declared to no one in particular as she paused in front. "That might do me some good. Maybe enough will make coming here seem less like a crack-brained idea." She walked up the steps, past the two militiamen at the doors and the elf conferring with them, and into the tavern.

Revlis

The haggard militia glanced at the elf through tired eyes.

"Another sellsword looking to make their mark eh? Councilman Gladhart's call must've worked better than he expected," he said as he gave the other guard a quick look before returning to the elf, "If you're looking to get right in the thick of it, I'd suggest going straight to Captain Belgrath at the palisades. He's currently organizing what's left of our defenses."

Ezarix

The seedy looking barkeep was a dwarf who gave the elf a somewhat distasteful scowl as he approached.

"What'll it be, knife-ears? We don't got much stock at the moment, so we're down ta cheap ale for a gold a pint an' there's some Orcish Whiskey left in the cellar if yer desperate ta kill yerself fer ten gold pieces."

Litaria

Upon entering the tavern, the atmosphere is quite smoky and dim. You are able to see a few patrons up near the bar itself but beyond that, there are a few empty tables with a rather depressed looking waitress moving about as quickly as she can.

Litaria couldn't help but feel sorry for the waitress scurrying about among the empty tables. After traveling so long she could do with a bite to eat, so she sat down at one and beckoned the waitress over.

"Are you okay? You look sad," Litaria asked, but then immediately regretted it. She didn't want to make the woman dwell even more on unhappy thoughts. "Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked, hoping there was at least something she could do to make up for it.

The Dwarven Barkeep smelled, much like everything else in this town, and his attitude was as charming as a dead Ox covered in burning tar. Although Ezarix doubted a live Ox in the same situation would be any more charming, so he let the thought slide.

"Perhaps, though it would seem the only thing your Orcish Whiskey could revive is a good mood, and perhaps some sort of merriment. Although when your served by a Short-Haired Stab-Vine such as yourself, that could kill any mood as well as your whiskey." He let out a sigh, "Well, it looks like I'll have some cheap Ale."

He placed a few coins on the bar, and turned around to survey the Tavern, looking for anything of interest.

(OOC: where by chance do we post OOC, and if not here a simple edit can fix this. Also: when will "Player 3" become Litaria?)

Litaria

The watery eyed waitress rubbed her eyes and let out a slight sniffle as she failed to provide a convincing smile.

"Oh; it's nothing that can be helped, miss. My husband and I lived out on one of the dozen or so farmhouses on the edge of town and had to flee when the first waves of these awful goblins showed up. He was called out to act as a militia and was killed in the first few days... *sob* *sob* Now, the only thing I had left of him was in that farmhouse, a locket he gave to me on our wedding day...

I'm sorry, I shouldn't be unloading my troubles on you like this. Now, what can Matilda get you to drink hmm?"

Ezarix

Receiving the cheap ale garners the same results as you might have expected. The taste is bland and the aftertaste is dull but it's still alcohol. Upon examining the remainder of the room, you overhear the conversation between the woman and the waitress Matilda. In addition to this, the barkeep cleans out a glass as he leans in closer to you.

"I'm wagerin' yer here for gold and glory, knife-ears. Go on to the palisades, you wanna play hero, go right ahead and dive in. The Cap'n Belgrath is needing all the help 'e can get."

"No, I'm sorry," Litaria said. "It wasn't any of my business to ask." On impulse, she reached up and took the waitress's hand into her own. "I'm sorry about your husband. If--if you'd be willing to describe where your house was, maybe I could go look for your locket for you."

She released the waitress and dug in her purse for some coins, suddenly feeling a bit awkward. "As for a drink...what's the cheapest thing you have? And is there anything to eat?"

Litaria

Matilda smiled and shook her head, causing her auburn locks to shiver slightly as she regained her composure.

"That's wonderful of you to offer, dear, but it's much too dangerous out there to go alone. Our house was right by a small pond just east off the main road and its surely a camp for those godless little cretins now."

She rushed off for a moment before returning with a single bottle that looked significantly more refined than what most individuals in the bar were partaking in.

"Here, sweet thing. On the house. A bottle of Telanor Red. I got it from a rather pompous merchant who was passing through town before all this awfulness started. It's a bit too sweet for my tastes but if you don't care for it either, you can see if you can find someone who will take it. As for the food, I can get you some stew for a gold, if you'd like, but most of our better stuff is gone at the moment."

He couldn't help but to listen in on the distraught waitress. Something lost and something borrowed it seemed was the usual sort. He took a large swig of the ale and gave the glass an off look before shrugging and finishing it.

"You get what you pay for it seems. Either, or, I'll think about the palisades." He said as he set the mug on the bar, and made his way toward the waitress and Human girl. "You know, I couldn't help but to overhear your conversing. I'd be more than willing to slay some goblins for a minor reward of course."

Azlok found his way from the mountains to Sun's Reach. He'd been planning on just heading there to offer his trade for food and drink, then to move on. But Hrolfnir had other plans for his tool. As Azlok arrived in the town he noticed innumerable hurt and injured. That being said, his trade was going to be very valuable to him here. With so many injured, he had to ask himself why they were damaged and the best way to answer a question, is talk to someone. He went to the nearest bar, which had two guards outside it. He trusted guards only on the battlefield. He had come to understand that they valiantly, if not a bit naively, followed orders. Whether the orders were lies or truths, they were orders and meant to be followed. In a life and death situation, that's all good and well, but when trying to understand a situation, that kind of thinking tended to produce some one-sided news. He headed inside to see a fellow Dwarf at the bar. He smirked at the familiarity and walked over.

"Whit drinks do ye have? An' what's the news? So many bleedin' round 'ere, yoo'd think 'ere was a war," he ignorantly said. He had left before the news arrived in his town. At most, if he really thought about it, he might remember seeing a human on horseback.

Action: Investigate the town's state through the barkeep as well as order a drink.

"Oh, thanks," Litaria said, taking the bottle and staring at it stupidly before registering what had happened. "Wait...but I haven't helped you yet!" She placed the wine on the table to mask her confusion, and handed Matilda a coin. "Some stew sounds wonderful, if it's not too much trouble."

At that moment, an elf who had been drinking at the bar butted in rudely. Litaria turned to glare at the interloper. "No one asked you, you greedy...elf!" Insults had never been her strong point. She turned back towards Matilda, suddenly ashamed. "I'm sorry. It's your decision who you want to help you."

Litaria & Ezarix

Matilda was a bit surprised at the slight scuffle between the two strangers but offered a warm smile in return.

"It's alright. I would never ask someone to go out there alone. I don't have much in the world left to give but I'd gladly give it away to get that piece of my husband back... I'll get that stew for you."

She took the coin and stepped away but not without offering the same smile to the elven sellsword. She brushed past a dark-haired dwarf on his way to the bar and slid past again as she brought back the stew.

"Let me know if you need anything else, alright?"

Azlok

The dwarven barkeep's disposition improved greatly upon seeing one of his own take a seat in front of him.

"Ach! We got nothin' but cheap ale and Orcish Whiskey left around 'ere, stone-brother. The damned goblins an' their raids have been bleedin' our supplies straight dry. Yer a priest o' Hrolfnir aren't ya? I saw the markings o' yer garb. Are ya here ta help end this nonsense with those anklebiters?"

Revlis sighed and looked longingly into the pub. He'd never said he was a sell sword, but he figured he wasn't going to get much better out of these two. Even if he did feel like arguing the point, he would probably just end up at the palisades anyway. Besides, he could probably use the money.

"Ah, yes. Thank you, friends. I bid you good evening."

Revlis turned and headed in the direction indicated.

Action: Head for the palisades.

(OOC: sorry. flaked there. mostly deciding where or not to argue with them, but the direction of progress has made that decision for me.)
