It was hard to resist putting all of the fruit into one tart. When Buster tried filling one of the tins the way that the grown-up had told her to, it didn't look like there was nearly enough in there. But if she put more in, there wouldn't be as many tarts to give to phonies, and that wouldn't make things any better. She just had to trust that this mare knew what she was doing.
Even then, she had to skim a little off the top of each tart in order to fill the last couple of tins. This whole sharing thing was harder when she was dealing with phonies outside her crew.
"All done!" she announced, knocking her hooves together to dislodge the few pieces of fruit that were stuck to them. "So, now it be time to hand 'em out, right?" What else could they possibly need to do?

Candy looked at the tarts with a critical look on her face, though it was a facade. Finally she nodded gravely, then her face split into a smile.
"These look great!" she said, lowering her eyes so that they were level with the counter. "And they are all even and everything!" Candy grinned at Filly Buster.
"There are still two more things we have t do." she said, digging under the counter for a very fine strainer. She placed the handled object on the counter and next found the bag of sugar.
"We have to put some sugar on top, so they aren't too bitter. And then we have t bake them so the dough gets fluffy and nice!" she said, holding the strainer over a couple tarts with her mouth.
"Put shum sugar in the strainer prease." she said through her teeth, casting her eyes to the small measuring cup in the sugar bag.

Two more things?! That would take forever. It would have been far quicker if she had just taken the bag of fruit like she'd planned. But then, Buster reminded herself, she wouldn't get to spread the joy to anyone outside of her crew. Apparently, the more phonies you shared with, the harder you had to work for it. Or something.
"Aye," she mumbled, her enthusiasm waning just a bit. But she did reach into the indicated bag and come up with a heaping cup full of sugar. So heaping that it began to leak onto the counter. Before too much could spill, she dumped the contents into the strainer. "Done! Next?"

Candy could see that Filly Buster was getting impatient. Her enthusiasm wasn't as high as it was when they began. After the sugar was put in the strainer, she shook her head, dusting the whole lot of tarts with sugar. Then she spit it out into the sink, and went to Filly. She put a hoof on her tiny shoulder, and said "Just have to bake them and they are done. Sometimes good things take a little more time then we would like. But it is always worth it!"
She put the tarts on pans, and layered them in the oven. Then there was a matter of waiting a few minutes until the timer finally went off. She pulled the pans from the oven with care and hot pads. A fruity smell filled the room.
"These look great!" she announced, beckoning the flutter filly over.

The baking was the absolute worst part. Once the tarts were in the oven, Filly Buster had nothing to do but pace in front of it. Every few seconds she would stop and check the timer, to see that it had barely moved at all. How could anyone stand all of this waiting? Was it really so important to do all of this, just to share with a few extra phonies?
Finally, after what felt like hours- but was really just a few minutes- the timer went off. Buster scrambled for the oven door, then backed away as the grown-up handled the hot things with thick pads. Once they were put down, she leaned in and took a smell. "Wow! That smells mighty yummy!"
No self-respecting pirate would use a word like yummy, she scolded herself. But in this case, it was the only one that was appropriate.
"So, now do we be handin' 'em out?" If there was another step, she might well keel over from exasperation.

Candy couldn't help but outright laugh at the barely contained impatience Filly was experiencing. She knew all to well about that impatience when it came to baking. Back when she was young, she used to do the same thing in front of the oven as well as the fridge, eager to see how her creations came out.
Candy nodded, placing a basket on the counter and putting a layer of parchment paper in the bottom. "NOW we get to hand them out!" she announced, putting a flat layer of tarts in the basket before another layer of parchment paper.
"I do this so they don't stick together." she explained to Filly as she worked, until the basket was full. There was enough for a smaller basket, one that could be Flutter sized, so Candy created a basket for Filly Buster as well. Then she took the larger of the two in her mouth and pointed to the door with smiling eyes.
There were phonies still out and about in the town square, and some waved to Candy as she and the youngster walked. Candy waved back, then found a bench to place her basket on. When a couple walked by with a human, she stopped them, offering them a tart with the hopes that they would stop by her shop sometime.
They left with their snacks, and she turned to Filly. "It's just as easy as that!"DivineSaturn Sorry for the ton of quotes! My formatting was acting up XD

Well, it was about time! As far as Buster was concerned, this was a lot of work for a little reward. Sure, everything smelled better now. A whole lot better, really. But wouldn't they have been able to get more or less the same results from doling out the fruit?
She didn't say any of this. It was too late for it to matter, and a part of her was still worried that the grown-up would try to punish her for her attempted pillaging. Though in her opinion, having to do all that waiting in the kitchen was punishment enough. She didn't mind the work too much. Part of it was actually kind of fun. But all that waiting had to be torture meant to teach her a lesson. Nophony could put up with that every time they had to cook something!
At least it was over now. Buster took the smaller basket and followed Candy Dandy's lead, handing a tart to a stallion that passed by. He seemed happy to get it, which made her heart lighten a bit. Maybe there was some point to this after all.
She picked up another tart, and her stomach let out a quite audible growl. All of that work had made her hungry. But the tarts weren't for her, so with a small sigh, she offered it to a mare who had come by. It was rewarding, she supposed, but that didn't stop her from being hungry.
