Her attitude was perhaps her most attractive feature, as Drayce was soon learning. Aine's confidence was on par with his own, and the fact she could survive on her own without needing him to be around every second of the day was very appealing. Plus being outdoors away from his work and people was lifting stress of his shoulders. While he wasn't exactly acting himself, the grumpy pants were definitely off and he could allow himself to relax slightly. Truly relaxing and being himself was something that the dragon hadn't been able to do for centuries. Not since that b***h appeared in his life. At least she had left long before he'd fled to the chalet he called home, at least he had this mountain range to hide away in and share with Aine. Even saying that thought in his head made his stomach churn in a most horrendous way, just the simple thought of sharing something with a female was sending his heart into a panicked frenzy. It wasn’t like the idea of sharing his home with a woman had been completely off the books, but within a more… Permanent arrangement, now that made him uneasy. The easiest way for him to even get close to conquering that fear as well as justifying Aine living there was the whole Slave/Master relationship. At least this way he could always get rid of her without any guilt when he grew bored of her, as well as giving someone their freedom back. It was foolproof; he’d be doing a good deed and he’d get his own space back. ’Not like I plan to fall in love with the woman…’ he thought bitterly, a look of contempt coming over his sculpted face. Drayce hadn't heard her comment about wanting to swim first, his mind lost in his own thoughts, and it wasn't until she was well into the hot spring water that he realised she'd stripped down to nothing in her normal confident way and had jumped in. He couldn't help the smile that tugged on the corners of his mouth, one of his first real honest expressions, but it was fleeting and soon disappeared as quickly as it appeared. He could still appreciate the view before him though.

While Aine became acquainted with the hot spring, Drayce settled himself down on the picnic rug. This little outing was a good excuse to not only keep the phoenix entertained, but to still score some alone time. She could go off and do her own thing in this secluded area, and likewise he could do the same. Leaning back and watching the sky above, the dragon took some time to wonder about just how safe he was up here in his mountain range. Would she think to even look for him on this side of the world? He hadn't really left any trace of where he'd disappeared to, he'd just up and vanished. It wasn't like his family knew where he was either - they'd disowned him long ago and would probably admit he was dead before figuring out where he'd run off to. Still, the threat that she could just turn up and try to turn everything to s**t again would always loom over his head. At least with Aine around, if she ever turned up, he'd have a way to finally get his freedom back for good. While Drayce didn’t doubt his power, having the magical properties of the phoenix within his home would mean a permanent end to his biggest problem. A piercing cry that echoed the bowl-like glade made him freeze on the spot, his violet eyes darting around to try and find the source of the sound, before realising it was the phoenix herself. She'd actually changed forms, Drayce hadn't expected her to do so this early on. ”Huh…” The soft sound of surprise passed his lips in a soft mumble; her phoenix form was still in it’s young stage. ”Well that’s unexpected.” It didn’t make her any less precious in his mind, but it did mean he’d keep her around long enough for her to mature properly. He couldn’t let something that pretty and fluffy be free when she was in prime shape for cuddles in that form. Watching her disappear until she was nothing but a small speck in the sky, the male removed his own clothing in a trail towards the hot spring, sinking into the warm water with a cheeky smirk. It was always easier on his muscles to change form in the hot water, and the spring was large enough to take his dragon form as long as he curled himself around a few times. Peeking his head out the water mere moments later, smoke trailing from his nostrils, the violet dragon smirked as best as a dragon could upon seeing the pile of fluffy feathers preening on a rock.

Aine was clearly rather absorbed in her preening, something that didn't really surprise Drayce, and it gave him an opportunity to be a little cruel in a cheeky kind of manner. Climbing up the rocks, using his talons to lift himself quickly to the same perch Aine had chosen, his large form moved with a grace that was almost strange for such a big creature. His only goal for climbing up the rocks was to surprise Aine... and drop his head down onto her fluffy form. He wasn't dumb enough to call her 'fluffy' or 'cute' out loud or to her face, but he did enjoy soft things, and right now she was the epitome of soft. He just couldn’t resist fluffy and soft, if Darcy the Hellhound was anything to go by. It wasn't hard for him to pin her down under his jaw, and he allowed himself to go limp and enjoy her softness in a weird dragon-head cuddle. Staying there long enough for Aine to get flustered and realise that she could actually escape, Drayce huffed smoke from his nose in an amused manner. He’d let her have her fun first, why spoil the time with the fuzzy phoenix by retreating too early out of his own panicked feelings. The dragon could only stand to be in his form out in the open for so long before he was slithering down the rocks once more, his giant body sliding back into the hot spring, head resting on the grassy shoreline so he could doze in the sun, the bowl offering more protection from above than the perch on the rocks. At least he left enough space in the water if Aine decided she wanted to swim around his violet form, but it didn't take long for the beast to get bored and change. Or so it seemed, judging by the purposely sluggish movement and long huffing sigh that resulted in a stream of smoke from his nose. In reality he was worried that his bright colour would be too easy to spot, even if they were well hidden in the bowl, he just couldn’t shake that paranoia that the b***h would return suddenly. Changing back into his human form in the water again, he stepped out onto the grass and pulled on his cotton boxers before heading back to the picnic rug to pull out food. ”You hungry, pretty bird?” He called out, the thoughtful gesture quite honest, compared to his attitude back at the house. The man was starving, the change of forms taking a lot of energy out of him, and he began to get himself a platter of food. There was a large amount of cold cut meats, along with a whole cooked chicken, crusty bread, cheese and a number of other finger foods. There was some sweet foods too, and the violent haired man was quite content with chunks of bread with cheese and ham for the time being. The surprising thing was his unnatural quietness brought about by the thoughts of his ex, but whether he'd actually tell Aine was another story. Drayce wasn't about to tell the truth about the evil temptress that nearly killed him, but he wasn't exactly going to lie about the woman forever, given that she could turn up at any given moment to try and kill them both for the fun of it. At least he could enjoy the company of a stunning woman until such a time.
”Are you enjoying yourself, pretty Firebird?”

He'd succeeded in surprising her - so caught up in her preening, something she hadn't done in what felt like forever to the prissy phoenix, Aine hadn't even noticed the dragon sneaking up on her. That sounded incredibly silly to even think, but it was the truth. Squawking indignantly when he dropped his head on her, and then going stubbornly silent out of embarrassment that she had sounded like a damn chicken, the fluffy phoenix sulked while he used her as a pillow, finding the entire situation humiliating. She wasn't quite sure if he was cuddling her or just trying to crush her and fluffed up quite a bit when he finally pulled his head away. If she could have, she would have huffed at him. As it was, her tail flicked a bit as she hopped to another perch to ignore him, enjoying the heat from the hot springs below. Once he was in the water for a bit, Aine dove in, swimming around the warm dragon and enjoying the brief moment of peace. He was being a d**k, in her opinion, but at least he had brought her out to somewhere so nice. Maybe that meant he was going to change his attitude - which he better anyway, if he didn't want a severe scolding from his firebird.

When she heard the question, one could almost see the phoenix sigh before she swam to the edge and shifted back to human. It wasn't her favorite form and it was harder to shift into, leaving her sore and almost cranky at not having her wings for the moment. Rolling her shoulders, Aine tossed her head, wet hair sticking to her back as she went and reluctantly pulled on her clothing. Her body was so warm that she was already dry and she would have sat around nude if she wanted to get crumbs all over her. Eating while naked was just disgusting, in her opinion, and she went to sit over near Dryace and look over the food curiously. "It smells good," she remarked, picking over it to get some for herself as well. "Yes, I'm hungry. Shifting always makes me hungry. And yes, I am enjoying myself. Very much so." Aine added those last three words after a moment's pause, as if debating on the wisdom of saying them. She didn't want to give him more power over her, letting him know she liked somewhere so he could take it away if he felt like it. But she was fairly certain that the dragon wasn't that much of an a*****e and decided he'd been nice enough to earn some praise.

Well, aside from using her as a pillow.

"What about you? You aren't nearly as pissy as when we left, so I'm guessing you've relaxed some," the phoenix remarked bluntly, working on the sweets and cheese. It was a very odd combination, but she liked it, alternating bites. She ignored the chicken, very much so, and ate some roast beef. Aine didn't bother making a sandwich, she simply took a few pieces and ate them one at a time, enjoying the crusty bread as well after spreading some butter on a piece she took. It was good food and reminded her of times when she'd go out and surprise people, get offered food in exchange for good luck or whatever they would believe at that time, and then leave again. Of course, Drayce hadn't bought her for good luck, but it was still an amusing memory.

"What about you? You aren't nearly as pissy as when we left, so I'm guessing you've relaxed some,"

Blinking, a little taken aback by her sudden comment, it took Drayce a moment to formulate a reply. Aine had admitted that she was enjoying herself at this little secret spot of his, a comment he hadn’t actually expected to be so sincere, and it had made him pause mid-chew. Staring at the large piece of crusty bread he’d been stuffing into his mouth, the dragon forced himself to swallow before giving a casual half-smile.
"I… Am quite at peace right now, actually."
Toasting her with his piece of bread, he stuffed the rest of it in his mouth and leaned back on his hands, eyes turned to the sky. A few chews and the morsel was gone, and Drayce piped up in a lazy tone of voice.
"It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to relax like this. For a long time this place was more like a sanctuary than anything else… But that’s a story for another day, pretty bird. I’m far too content to tell that tale."
Winking, Drayce absent-mindedly picked at the platter he’d pieced together, wondering silently just how Aine would take that statement.

He had zero intentions of ever telling her about his ex, nor the fact that she wanted him dead.

With enough food shovelled into his face, Drayce seemed to take on a much more content aura than previously seen. It had been a very long time since Drayce had felt like he could totally relax and peek out from behind his wall. He didn’t want to trust Aine so early on in this partnership, but with her no-care attitude, he was finding it very hard to pretend to be this sarcastic, macho dragon he often pretended to be. Sighing gently, the man rubbed his face and pushed a few wayward bangs out of his face. Was he ready to learn to let someone into his world, to risk someone’s life just so he could be comfortable and guilt-free? No, probably not, but at least if he was going to start to tell another living soul about his messed up history, at least it was one that was as equally as immortal as he was. All he needed was time.

A shadow passing over the sunken clearing made the dragon freeze mid-reach towards food.

Eyes going wide, an audible gasp of air was expelled and it took the male a moment to sit up straight and look up to the sky. There were a few clouds, sure, but they were quite wispy. Surely it must have been a cloud that passed over, but that quickly?
"Did… You see that? Or are my eyes more tired than I thought."
Trying to laugh it off, there was a hint of noticeable panic in his voice. So much for wanting more time before needing to explain this hefty amount of baggage he carried around. A chill passed over the male as the all too familiar feeling of being watched fell over him, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up as a wash of goosebumps danced across his skin briefly. Forcing Aine to retreat back home thanks to his own problems hadn’t been high on his list of things to ever have to do, but here he was, trying to calmly pack the picnic away into the hamper.

"I’m going to say this once and once only; if I ever say we need to leave somewhere, we’re leaving. No questions, no arguments. It’s for your own safety, Aine. You’ll learn why one day."
The use of her actual name instead of some kind of bird related nickname was hopefully all that Drayce needed to convince his feisty companion that he wasn’t messing around. He knew full well there would most likely be a fight this time around, and to be honest he couldn’t blame her, especially after bringing her to what was supposed to be a quiet, secluded area. Hamper packed up in a completely undignified manner, Drayce got dressed hurriedly before whistling in a ridiculously high-pitched tone. The sound only lasted a second, but by the time Drayce had his shoes on and basket in hand, a very large, very fluffy black animal was running down the steps towards the two. No longer the size of a mere wolf, Darcy was in full on protective mode, and as large as a pony.
"Darcy, guard us and guide us home. Something isn’t right.."
It was all Drayce was willing to give away at this moment, regardless of whatever questions Aine might have voiced. It was also the last the dragon spoke, opting to stay silent and pale-faced on the rather rapid walk back to his chalet.

Did he care if Aine would be angry about this sudden departure? No, not if it meant potentially saving her from a needless and bloody death. There would be plenty of time to make it up to her, plenty of chances to give her a proper day out without the fear of being attacked. Just, right at this very second, he was preoccupied with keeping himself - and Aine obviously - alive and well. Everything had been going so beautifully that afternoon too. He’d even allowed himself to relax and let his old self seep through a crack in his armoured wall. Maybe that had been his mistake, maybe letting himself get comfortable around someone new so quickly had let his guard down. Buying Aine hadn’t really been something he’d planned to do, he wasn’t even sure why he’d gone to that place to start with, but yet it felt like it was something he had to do. Like something had drawn him there. Not one to believe in fate or any of that bullshit, he’d convinced himself he’d go buy someone for company, for entertainment. To break the monotony that was his immortal life.

But there was only so much self-convincing someone could do before the truth shattered the illusion.

By the time the male got to the gates of his chalet, he was on the edge of panic. Fingers worked their way quickly through violet hair to pull it up into a messy sort of bun, flyaway strands of hair dancing in his face as he ushered Aine inside to safety. A hushed command to guard the house was given to Darcy, the beast of a hellhound bounding off to the boundaries of the chalet compound with little more than an understanding growl. Drayce knew he was most likely over-reacting to the situation, but he had gone years without even a hint of that things darkness. To have it show up when he was finally on track with his life, finally getting his act together and getting to do what he wanted, it was surely no coincidence. Muscles in the man’s forearms twitched, his neck ropey and tensed as if it was recalling a multitude of pain and anger, Drayce had to suck in a deep breath before he could finally speak to Aine in a voice very unlike his usual smooth tone.
"I need you to stay in the chalet grounds for a while. This isn’t a request. You can call workers over from the main resort but you cannot leave until I say so. Do not disobey me. Please."
While the please was a quick afterthought, the dragon had to make sure the woman in his care understood just how serious he was about this matter. Even his eyes had reverted to their bright violet dragon colour, slit pupil and all. Silvery wisps of smoke ghosted from his nostrils as he took a few deep breaths to calm his racing heart as they walked back inside the wooden chalet, the door firmly shut and hastily locked. As strange as it was for a dragon to reside inside something wooden, the chalet wasn’t as flammable as it appeared to be. Drayce wasn’t an idiot, he had safety precautions set up long ago.

With little left to say to Aine besides mumbling "Order what you want for dinner, I’m not hungry." on his way to the stairs, Drayce shut himself inside his bedroom. There wasn’t much he could do right now besides watch his windows and wait to see if it had been a trick of the eye and a huge misunderstanding, or if danger really was on it’s way to his quiet mountain retreat. If things came to it, he’d end the threat once and for all, but that required losing his one shred of dignity that remained, and falling into the same category as her. But, if it meant protecting Aine and giving her the life she needed… Drayce supposed that he could put aside his selfish ways and swallow his cowardice if it became necessary.

All that was left to do was wait.
