Steg nodded his agreement. "Yes, that soil is very easy to work with here. I'm sure we can cover a fairly large area of the site tomorrow." That was only if they didn't find anything. Should they find any bones then they would need to stop work to carefully extract the bone from the site, do the initial exam of it and then of course carefully move it out of the site so that it wouldn't get damaged. Digging was only fast when there was nothing to be found. Now that Cera was here Steg hoped that they would find a large number of bones, partially so that he could share the joys of the finds with Cera but mostly so he could spend more time with her.
Seeing that she was ready to go Steg picked up costume tossed it over his back and then picked up his turtle shell full of supplies. He walked a bit slowly, balancing his costume while it wasn't buckled on was a sometimes difficult task and with the waning light he didn't want to trip over anything on the way there.

Cera followed closely behind Steg. The light was fading fast now and she wanted to make sure she didn't get separated from him on the walk to the grove. Granted she would be able to see well enough in the initial darkness of night but why would she want to leave Stegs side just because she could see? She wanted to tell Steg that she hoped the dig wouldn't go quickly, that maybe they would hit a hard patch of earth tomorrow that would slow them down, or better yet a bone, but it was next to impossible to talk with the turtle shell in her teeth.
She could see the trees up ahead, and a quick glance over her shoulder told her that the site was indeed quite close to where they would be sleeping tonight. Well at least they wouldn't have to waste a lot of time in the morning getting to the site. They could be there shortly after daylight and get the most out of the day to work through the area. Who knows maybe they would find something so spectacular that they would need to expand the dig site and stay for a week or more. Yup, a girl could dream.

Winding his way through the trees Steg led them to where the grove lay. It wasn't overly large but it would fit them both nicely with some room to spare. Setting the turtle shell down against the trunk of a tree he looked back at Cera. "Well here it is. It isn't much but it does the job." Of course she would be used to sleeping in such conditions having been out on many digs herself. But even so he wished he had found a better place to sleep, someplace more comfortable. Shaking off his costume he laid it beside the turtle shell and then laid down a short distance away.

Following Steg's lead Cera placed her turtle shell beside his. "It's better than some of the places I've had to sleep while on a dig." She told him with a smile. She could tell by his words and the way he looked that he wanted them to be staying elsewhere, but it wasn't needed, and honestly with nighttime settling in there wasn't time or light enough to find someplace else. Besides this place was nice. Letting out a small yawn Cera went and laid down a couple paces away from Steg. This place was almost perfect and if she wasn't so shy about admitting her feelings she might had curled up right beside Steg. "Goodnight Steg." She said as she laid her head down on her front legs.

It had been hard for Steg to fall asleep. He was exhausted from a day of digging and while his body needed rest his mind was wide awake. Seeing Cera laying only a short distance away sleeping peacefully had been what had kept Steg up for some time. He enjoyed watching her sleep, something he wished he could do every night for the rest of his life. Practically everyone in the herd knew about his crush on her, he had been a foal when he first started to have feelings for her, but he was just too damn shy around her to say anything. Oh he could chat it up while they worked together, but actually talking about things besides a dig...well that was next to impossible for him. But he knew he couldn't wait forever, he would just need to get up the courage to tell her.
He had slept fairly decently once he was able to force his eyes closed. But now the sun was rising and if they wanted to get in a full day at the dig site they needed to get up and moving. Stretching Steg walked over to where Cera was sleeping. He watched her for a long moment before lowering his head and giving her a soft nudge. "Cera, it's time to get up."

Sleep had swiftly taken Cera once she had laid down in the cool thick grass of the clearing. The nudge that she felt now was too early for her liking, she just wanted to stay asleep. She had been able to tell whoever it was to go away and leave her alone when she heard Steg's voice. Please don't let this be a dream. Slowly she opened her eyes and...there he was. He was so close that all she had to do was move just a bit and she would be touching him. A wide smile came to her lips. "Good morning." It was such a great feeling to wake up and have Steg right there. She yawned and stretched before slowly getting to her hooves. She could see the first bits of sunlight filtering through the trees. "Did you sleep well?" She asked looking at him once more.

Steg almost reached forward and nuzzled Cera as she woke, but then his fear came through and he didn't. What if she didn't feel the same way as he did? It would be devastating. But seeing her smile like that brought a smile to his own lips. "Good morning." He replied to her before taking a step back as she got to her feet. "I did." He told her with a nod. "And you, did you sleep well?" Just tell her how you feel, he mentally scowled himself but remained silent.

"Yes, I did. This is a great little spot you have here." Cera told him before shaking out her pelt. She fell into silence and was at a loss for what to say. If she could Cera would choose to stay here in this little grove and just spend the day with Steg, catching up and not worrying about the dig site until tomorrow. But she wasn't sure if Steg would do that. They both lived for the thrill of the hunt - the hunt of old bones and artifacts that was, and it was hard to stay away from that for too long. After what felt like an eternity she spoke one more. "Do you think you can help me with the buckles of my costume, it was pretty warm out there yesterday and I would like to keep it safe and clean."

Steg couldn't help but feel a swell of pride as Cera commented on how nice of place he had picked to stay. He had been pretty picky when looking for a spot to set up camp while he was working this dig site. An important thing was having a sheltered area not only to rest, but to inspect whatever they found out of the elements and where they could safely be stored until it was time to head back to the herd and share the findings with everyone. Of course Cera knew this, but it made him feel great knowing she liked the spot. Just tell her how you feel, he scolded himself, but like an idiot he kept his mouth shut.
When Cera asked for help with her costume Steg nodded slowly. He had helped others with their costumes before, including Cera, but this was different somehow. He slowly stepped forward and reached for the straps that wrapped around her neck. Carefully he used his teeth to manipulate the buckle, all the while his heart was pounding so hard in his chest he thought it might explode.

Cera didn't miss the sudden shift in Steg, one minute he was looking proud and the next a bit of fear went through his eyes. But she wasn't too worried, Steg got like this quite often when it was just the two of them. She remained still as he stepped forward to help with the straps that she was unable to reach herself. As much as she loved her costume, she had to admit, there were times when it was annoying, especially trying to get it on and off without help. But she wouldn't give it up, it was too important to her, to the herd to do so. It was hard not to move when Steg was this close, but she had to remain still so he could get the buckles undone.
When she felt the second buckle fall loose she turned her head. "Thank you." She told him, and then bolstered a bit by some unknown force, Cera stepped forward and gave Steg a nuzzle. It was not your typical friendly herd mate nuzzle either, it was a nuzzle that would tell him how she felt, even if she had yet to actually voice it.

Steg was certain that he was blushing by now. He was so close to Cera and he kept gently touching her neck as he manipulated the buckles. When he finally got them both undone he was able to step away to give her room to remove the rest of her buckles and costume, when she steps forward and nuzzled him. And it wasn't just any nuzzle, it was the nuzzle he had been wanting from her, wanting to give her for a long time. Though his heart fluttered even more Steg couldn't help but step into her show of affection and return it with one of his own.
"Oh, Cera." He said softly as he nuzzled into her. "You have no idea how long I have wanted this for us."

Feeling Steg return her affection Cera felt such joy. Finally, after all this time they had gotten past the awkward stage of not saying or doing what they wanted to. Perhaps now they wouldn't make it to the dig site today because clearly they would have a lot to talk about. But for right now she simply enjoyed Steg's closeness. Hearing his words he let out a soft laugh. "Probably about as long as I have." Breaking the nuzzle Cera stepped back and smile at Steg. "Let's forget about the dig today, you and I have a lot of things we need to discuss."

Steg flashed Cera a goofy smile. "Are you sure we can't squeeze in a few ours at the dig first?" He asked jokingly, but knew the answer before he had even said it. Giving his head a shake he laughed slightly. "I'm just kidding." Joking was his way of dealing with situations like this when he didn't quite know what to do or say. Well he knew what to say but was still so nervous about doing so he couldn't managed to get them out. Finally he was able to speak more seriously. "The site will be there tomorrow, right now this is the more important thing for us to explore." Imagine it, after all this time they were finally talking about their feelings. And to think he had been worried that she didn't feel the same way as he did, guess they were both too nervous to say or do anything until now.

Cera flashed him an annoyed look as he suggested going to the dig site for a bit first. Of course she knew he was joking but she couldn't help but give him that look. "You better be kidding." She told him but couldn't hold back her laugh. That was typical Steg, making silly comments when things got serious. It was one of the many things that she loved about him. First thing first, Cera loosened the final strap on her costume and shrugged it off before placing it near Steg's in the long grass. It would be safe there for the day, plus it's not like they were going to be going far now. Turning she looked at Steg. "How is it that we both managed to say nothing for so long?" Clearly it was a sign that they were more alike that they thought and that made them the perfect match. Whoever said opposites attract was clearly wrong in this case.

"I think you know me well enough to know I'm kidding." Whenever situations got tough Steg always turned to joking to get through it. Some of the herd members didn't approve of such an approach, but many appreciated his light-hearted comments when things were looking down. Moving to CEra he gave her another nuzzle. "I think we both figured the other didn't feel the same way so we kept all our thoughts hidden, hoping that one day the other would do or say something that would give us hope." It's exactly what he felt like for the past...well for most of his life. He laughed. "I bet half of the herd has been waiting for us to finally admit our feelings to each other and were wondering what was taking us so long." The herd was pretty good at judging which members would end up together.
