"Well kicking is a start, just means you need to work on arm movement more than anything else. Arm movement's easy, you just need to find a stroke that like, works for you, it doesn't need to be anything complicated. Look."
To demonstrate he went through the various front strokes, swimming a quick lap from one side to the other.
"Breast stroke and the front crawl are probably what you'd be looking at. Breast stroke is a lot less ...splashy." Though splashy was probably what Jerry excelled at.
"I don't think you need to learn the butterfly stroke, its pretty complicated. It's about the hardest s**t, but its great for good strong arm muscles and refining your technique" He demonstrated it anyway, coming back to a halt next to Jerry.
"It's up to you if you think the front crawl or the breast stroke look most simple.I'd maybe say breast stroke. It erm. Keeps your head out of the water." that might limit his chance of drowning.

Jerry watched like an eager young padawan studying a master. It didn't LOOK that hard. He had good coordination, for the most part! He could do this. "Alright. Alright-" He took a deep breath, carefully turning around while still clinging to the side of the pool. Another deep breath, and he valiantly pushed himself off the side wall, gliding through the water and for a moment he felt as though he was flying- the momentum of the push was fading, and he remembered he needed to do the hand motions- one, two, three- he tried to turn his head for a breath, but sucked in only water as he veered deeper.
His flailing attempt at Breast Stroke turned into a desperate attempt to recover with a doggy paddle, and ended in gasps and sputters.

Rep was impressed, at least for a bit at Jerry's gusto and enthusiasm, but that quickly faded in slight horror as the momentum faded off without Jerry keeping up with his arms.
And then he panicked. Rep sighed.
"Don't freak out! Stay steady."
And kicking his feet he swam over to heft Jerry up by the chest so he could get some air and refocus without drowning. Someone drowning at lessons would be pretty bad.

"I got it! I got it!" Jerry sputtered, but he didn't get it.
He didn't understand it. He KNEW he had pretty good coordination- he could play countless instruments, but fingering some frets or keys was different from trying to keep his skinny frame from sinking. With Rep's help, he managed to make it to the side of the pool again, gasping for breath.
"Was... was that better?"

"It was better. But not good enough to stop you drowning I think." Rep said with a concerned sort of resignation, he wasn't sure how it was possible to get Jerry to learn to swim without some serious practice and dedication, but it was important that he learned.
"But its a start. You can't freak out. Its like. You know how if you get tempo on a song? You have to keep it steady or its wrong? Its like that with swimming, you just have to keep your legs kicking to their own pace and get your arms in theirs. And not panic. Hold your breath till you get a clear shot to replenish it, don't inhale water."

Something in Rep's explanation seemed to click in Jerry's head and he nodded, lips pursed a moment, "Yeah, yeah I get that...." He sighed in exasperation, "It's hard to get the head turn just right, though! I turn but sometimes there's like... water splashing from my arm right into my face-"
