A stray breeze ruffled the water, and subsequently Aatami's loose clothing. He'd always preferred them a little baggy, but these days he was thankful when he could keep his pants on his hips.
The eevee boy waited and waited, patiently pulling in a little before letting the line out until it gave a tug. He waited again, clutching the rod a little tighter before it tugged once more and he reeled it in, leaning forward. "I think so!" His voice was unsure, but excited. Clearly he hadn't expected to catch a damn thing.
When he pulled it up it felt like he'd caught a Wailord, when in reality the fish was a smaller version of the ones currently being roasted. Aatami turned to Chism with a brighter smile, and pulled back a half second later upon realizing just how close the other child was. Still, he held up his fish, "You really were right, Chism." He rose and slipped around the hybrid child, making his way over to Truffles. "Sis, look!"

Looking up at Chism, Truffles stared at the fish a moment before taking it to cook. She looked back up with narrowed eyes at the boy, wondering if she should be pleased or offended. He'd just put down Aatami, but... she really was doing a better job. "Thanks," she said finally, turning to spear the fish on another stick and set it to roast.
She was pulling the first fish off the fire when Aatami came over as proud as could be. Seeing his excitement at the small fish, she smiled brightly. "That's great! Does this mean I don't have to go hunting for food anymore?" she asked teasingly as she took the new fish and held up the finished one. "Here. Eat this. Then you can go back to fishing."

Chism swore he heard flapping cloth and glanced out of the corner of his eye to see the boys clothing moving in the breeze, he himself moving his tail a little both away from stray clothes and from the breeze. It was an unconscious movement on his part but it seemed smart to not set the other boy on fire! The excitement in his voice was ear catching and he paused in his own actions to watch the eevee boy with a curious look, a slight smile finding his lips, a spark of...something...in his eyes and a faint nod of approval. Quick learner. That was good Chism thought to himself. That bright smile being given...and to himself of all people was surprising but in a good way...which was also surprising and perhaps not in a good way. He wasn't entirely certain about that one. Of course Truffles' chilly reaction to him amused him more than anything. It had been a backhanded compliment to be sure, and she'd taken it...as well as one could be expected to honestly. Chism let the siblings talk as he dangled his line in the water again, listening to their conversation flutter towards him. Yes eat. You seem to need it worse than I do right now....You should both eat so I don't have to somehow fish either of you out of the river. of course the second half of his silent internalization, was to "rationalize" the first part of his thoughts. Because really, why would he care if someone else needed to eat before him? Well to save himself a hassle later or so he was going to try and lead himself to believing. "You should both eat. I'm not about to jump into the river to save either of you." that would have put himself at risk....and yet he probably still would have done so if he could keep the flame on the end of his tail safe. Arrogant maybe...an a** for sure...but not utterly heartless.

Proud he was! Aatami couldn't help but to look at his fish, the first proof that this whole living-on-their-own thing was working. "I wouldn't make any plans, but I could try." And he would, too! He'd fish all day if that meant that they got to eat a decent meal at the end of the day.
His excitement waning, Aatami shook his head and held the fish back to Truffles. "You should have this one, sis. I can take the next one." Something about the whole situation told him there would be more, and Truffles had to be hungry; he knew he was. Chism would help them out, he hoped. Looking back at the other boy he couldn't help, but to look down at his feet after the statement, his larger ears flicking back. "Y-you should...too...not the saving us, but the...the uh..." shutupshutupshutup.

Truffles giggled softly. "Okay. No plans, yet." Seeing the fish handed back to her made her pause. Making sure Chism wasn't looking, she gave Aatami a sweet smile. "Okay. You better eat the next one though."
She instantly bristled at Chism's comment, though, and ground her teeth. "What's that supposed to mean?!" she huffed, tail twitching in irritation. She might be hungry, but she could put the beatdown on the stranger if she had to!

At the hostility Chism peered over his shoulder at her with a light smile. "It means, that if either of you fell in from weakness wrought by hunger, it would be dangerous if not suicidal for me to go in after you. So I simply prefer knowing you two have eaten, so this is a non-issue." Another fist was pulled off, and he walked it to Truffles then. "For you." he said simply, a slight smile given before he was stepping away, and pawing at the ground a little more to bait the hook. He would fish so long as he could find worms at this point. Though his head lifted at Aatami's words and he gave him a genuine smile. "Don't worry Aatami, I'll make sure I eat something before long, but thank you for the concern." it was nice really, if a bit unexpected. No one had really cared what he did, or did not do regarding himself, before.

Oh gosh, oh no, oh jeez. "Truffles, it's okay, he's just- " Well, this wasn't good, not good at all! "He's trying to help." See? Isn't that why he kept giving them fish? In his own way, Chism was helping, even if he didn't come off as the nicest of guys...Not that he wasn't it was just a little complicated. Right? Right.
He reached out for his twins hand and gave it a squeeze, trying to keep her from blowing her top over the hybrid boy before going back to his fishing. Aatami snatched up another worm, settled in with his rod and tossed it back out. "Okay, but if you don't eat the next one, have some acorns or berries. They're good snacks, and they'll keep you from getting too hungry while you wait."

Truffles remained stiff, her tail fluffed with irritation. As if she would fall into the water! "Yeah. Telling us he wouldn't save you if you fell into the river is soooooo helpful," she huffed shortly, ears pinning back as her brother squeezed her hand. "Doesn't matter anyway," she snorted, giving Aatami's shoulder a quick nuzzle. "I'd save you no matter how hungry I got."
Watching Aatami go back to fishing, she returned to the fire to cook more of the fish. She looked at the one in her hand, and tried to show some self-control as she took small bites. She'd learned that if she ate slower, she wouldn't need to eat so much to feel full. Then, Aatami could eat more. ...And the silly yellow dude.

"Alright I'll make sure to eat one of the next fish. You two just looked hungrier than me was all." a warm smile of all things was flashed to Aatami while he got the next fish up and out of the water. He paused next to Truffle waiting till she wasn't looking down and crouched and held the fish out. "Here, another one for you. I'll see about the next one unless one of you two are still hungry. I don't mind eating last. My way of saying thanks for letting me use your poles and fire." was...he actually being...nice? It would seem so. Maybe his own hunger was affecting him. He was hungrier than he was letting on.

Aatami looked back over his shoulder at Truffles, and screwed up his mouth in a frown. Why was she eating so slow? When she did that, he had to wonder if she didn't like the food, or if it was subtle protest to something he'd said. Well, he'd just catch another kind of fish, and make her eat that! Anything to get her to not be hungry anymore and to stay healthy.
"I think we're all a little hungry." Aatami answered as a way of compromise. He pulled another fish out of the water, and sat it next to him after digging for a fresh worm. Hearing Chism though, Aatami had to turn to look at the exchange. Was he...? Was he warming up his sister?! Maybe they were making friends? Truffles might have a friend!
Arceus be blessed!

Tossing away the bones of her eaten fish, Truffles poked at the one cooking and pulled it up from over the fire. Done! "Aatami! Get over here and eat something!" She called shortly, looking over for Aatami, but instead seeing Chism right next to her. She hesitated, looking at him curiously. What was with this guy? "It's fine. Don't need to thank me," she murmured quietly. She took the fish and stabbed it onto the stick in place of the one she'd just pulled off.

Chism smiled and gave a nod of understanding. "This is true, I think we are all hungry. We'll get that taken care of for us all before long won't we?" "Might not need to, but I wanted to all the same. You still hungry? I'll catch a few more if you are I don't mind." really, it was sort of nice at this point to have someone else to talk to, and the promise of hot food for his stomach! He could have been crabbier, but with that sharp stick he decided it was best to change tactics slightly, and be a little less surly. Hearing that Aatami was being called to eat the cooked fish he moved back to the water a hand moving to rest on the others shoulder. "Go on. I'll catch a few more for everyone."

Aatami's muscles tensed, and he frowned, the way a child might when scolded. He'd hoped she would just eat one on her own, but Truffles wasn't like that, he knew, even if he hoped.
Before he left to get his supper, Aatami dug a hole in the ground where his feet lay, and stuck the pole inside. He propped the area up with the largest stones he could find. Hopefully it would hold up until he came back over, and who knew, maybe he'd catch the biggest fish of the day!
Feeling a hand on his shoulder, he turned to see Chism, and gave a little smile. "I'll be back over soon." Aatami slipped off his post and went back to Truffles, taking the fish that had been offered to him with small bites. "You know, you should cook more often. This is pretty good."

Truffles nibbled her lip. How frustrating. "Yeah. Just one more though!" she said firmly. She would be fine with just one more fish to eat! Certainly!
Glad to see Aatami eating, her ears twitched with the compliment, and she dropped her gaze the the fire bashfully. "Anything'll taste good when you're hungry," she muttered, silently pleased with the praise. "Guess we could work out a system. You fish, and I cook. Make dinnertime a lot easier~"

While the siblings were busy talking, Chism continued to quietly fish, building up a small pile near him and finally placing them into his shirt when he'd collected a good half dozen and took them over to the pair to be cooked, and finally sat down as well with a worn sigh. Some food, and he'd be on his way. He could tell his welcome was pretty much worn out as far as she was concerned, and he didn't want to make the situation even tenser than it already was. He looked around and found a small stick and stuck it through one of the fish he had brought and began to cook it carefully over the flame on his tale. This way she didn't have to cook for him either. It just seemed...easier. "You two can keep the rest of the fish. I'll go once I eat this one." he was hungry enough to eat more than one but he'd eat more later or something.
