Remarque blinked and cringed at the siren; it was loud and unexpected and not anything like on his planet, so he was more than ready to escape its cry. It was a strong reminder that he did have somewhere to be, though. In talking with the girl, he had all but forgotten that he had any plans at all. "Oh!" he piqued, "Oh, I'm so sorry—yes, that would be wonderful!" He bounced up from his seat, but extended his hand to her to help her up. "Probably not going to make a very good impression on the rest of the people here if I never show up…"

He had enjoyed the conversation with her—perhaps not necessarily the subject content, but he had found that Airaha had been a delight. "We can figure something out," he promised her. "You shouldn't have to be alone. So we can work something out! I mean, worst comes to worst, I'll just send you presents all the time. Do they have to disinfect those, too? I'd have to make sure not to send you anything edible, then."

He inched closer to her, paranoid about the clouds and the siren; in times of fear or uncertainty he was absolutely the sort to want to be close to another—and right now, Airaha was his only link to understanding what was going on and where he should be going.

Having had the siren for so long it didn’t seem half as daunting as it would be for a stranger. Airaha could still recall as a child trying to sing along with it until her mother berated her for screaming at the top of her voice. As long as one acted swiftly the clouds of poisonous gas was a mere trifle hiccup to the day to day running of the domes, any moment now the power of the Tiahi’agnai would strike up and sap the toxic air into one of the many air vents, directing it until it was pushed out into space. Such was the power of their guardian senshi.

Smiling she allowed him to step a little closer, her eyes watching him intently as she took in the colour of his hair, his delicate eyelashes even the shape of his nose. She could imagine looking at his face for a decade and never stop finding something to like about it. She could tell why they had chosen him as the next Senshi of his planet, although verging on the tip of shyness there was a strength she could see – it may take years to cultivate it but eventually it would be there at his beck and call. It was a shame she wouldn’t be able to watch him grow into that person. But maybe in another life.

“Haha yes, even presents have to go through the process but something hardy and durable will surely survive! And do not worry the people here they will forgive almost anything for the oddity you are – as long as you don’t sneeze on anyone I wouldn’t be surprised to see you fawned over by all the engineers and dim’ina of the court! I will keep it a secret that I got to have you all to myself for as long as I did.”

The siren was still going strong and with increase in sound from another siren Airaha knew her time was up. Taking the step to close the gap between them both she leaned up towards him, her eyes catching his as she came in close, her hand coming to rest against his head as she pushed a hidden button behind his ear where the collar of the suit came to rest. The reaction was for the gas mask to snap into play, its hidden parts opening like a flower until it in cased his head and became pumping clean sweet air. Grinning she did the same to herself and stood back her eyes twinkling at her mischief.

“I will take you to your destination if you would like me too, it would do me no harm to go through decontamination at city hall, the queues at the nearest tavern will be huge and I can visit the local library. Come, I shall show you and then we can part ways.”

Remarque looked almost as though he were nervous to have her so close to him; he squeezed one eye halfway shut, as though bracing for something, though it relaxed as soon as he realized what she was doing. And then he suddenly wasn't relaxed anymore because some strange thing was cocooning his head and what was going on

As soon as it closed over his face, he reached his hands up, brushing his fingers over the strange new barrier, and it wasn't until his lungs started to burn that he realized he'd been holding his breath.

Unsure of this technology, he was only slightly better off than a fish out of water as he struggled how to figure out how to breathe. Finally, after fidgeting and squirming, he sucked in a breath through his nose, expecting it would be strange and different and…

It wasn't.

He blinked, and then tried again, and then once more just to make sure—and when he had finally remastered the art of breathing, he smiled at the girl in front of him.

"Oh, so that's—okay. I mean, yes, I would really appreciate you showing me the way. You are so absolutely friendly, I'll have to find some way to sneak back in here and see you. But if your security is too good, I suppose I could settle for something a bit smaller. And more durable," he assured, as he certainly didn't think himself hardy or durable enough. "Because, I promise, even if people fawn over me, I've already decided that you're my favorite here, on this entire asteroid."

If hearts could swell and burst with pride Airaha would have done just that as he uttered his simple words. She was somebody favorite, and not just because she was Tiahi’agnai but because of who she was as a person! She hadn’t had that since being chosen with everybody knowing her destiny. Yet he, this Remarque, she could tell it wasn't because of that but because of their short time together hopefully developing a basis for friendship. Grinning widely she went to hug him but caught herself in time, any tear, even a little would leave him ill for weeks and a embrace may be the cause of such a thing. Instead she placed a gloved hand on his shoulder, careful not to seem too forceful with the gesture and leaned forward slightly.

“And you are mine too Remarque.” She wanted to say more but knew that anything else would have been too extreme and silly in these circumstances. Plus the more time they stayed out in the streets the worst the exposure to chemicals that neither would be able to stand much longer. The safety of the city hall and its decontamination chambers were the only answer and with a quick flourish of long robes Airaha had taken hold of Remarque’s hand and was leading him though the city streets deeper into the darkness and the fog and the people racing to get inside. It was like a strange calm panic had descended on the citizen of Ate. Every one ran but no one screamed or shouted, it was act they had done a thousand times before and surely a thousand times again. This was as much a part of their daily lives as waking up and eating breakfast. The smog came, they ran to hide and awaiting the blessing of the Tiahi’agnai to evaporate the poison and things would start running again as if it never happened – yet they would never forget.

The city hall was a large imposing building, made of nothing but cold hard metal it gave off the impression that it was part battle ship, one that had chosen this area as its final resting place. Already the lines of citizens were queuing outside the gates, people bustling and chatting amicably among themselves but with sense of urgency to their postures. No body stood still, the lines were made up of people leaning to the side to see how close they were to the entrance, others had to keep misbehaving children close to their legs in case they ran off and upon catching them lose their place in the queue. Airaha could almost feel sorry for them if she hadn’t spent half her life queuing in the same lines but now she could bypass the public entrance for visiting dignitaries, an added plus for her companion who the Dim’ina would want to usher him in quickly and quietly as to restrain any possibility of displeasing any other nations visitors.

“We must go though there and to the left, we will be separated once we reach the chamber but thats just standard procedure. Nothing will harm you, its just a cleaning ritual and one that won’t take long, the fog is not so bad today that we only have to endure about 6 hour’s worth of cleansing!”
She laughed before quickly regretting her joke, half worried the boy would take it seriously. It would barely take 5 minutes with the technology they possessed, he would have had something more extensive on first entering the domes but it still wasn’t a fun experience being alone in those cold rooms while lights and steam and purified chemical solution poured all over you. But once they were inside she could lead him to the City’s Halls grand foyer and finally onto his meeting where they would finally, sadly, separate for good.

Remarque didn't get the joke.

He was still vaguely dazed by the smog, the people in lines, the harsh design of the building…

Nothing here was like home. Especially not their technology.

His asteroid was so much less interested in the technical side of things—they cared about art and entertainment, about beauty and creativity. But…things probably would have been so much different for them if they had to deal with such a harsh climate.

"O-Okay," he replied, fumbling for a response after Airaha had spoken. Five minutes or six hours, he didn't know what to expect, but it seemed that whatever it was going to be, he had already accepted it.

"But," he insisted suddenly, "I'll see you once we get out, right? This would be a terrible goodbye!"

…Because, despite the confusion and uncertainty, he was still preoccupied with worrying about his new friend. She sounded like she had a lonely future ahead of her. He didn't wish that on anyone, and he wanted to change that—in at least some way. Maybe he couldn’t do much now, but he would do all he could.

Even if that just meant he got to give her a proper, friendly farewell before they parted ways.
