The shivered and then began to wake up. Her eye lids heavy and body heavier she tried to stand up. She whimpered as her mind whirled trying to remember, was this death? She remembered the pain in her face and lifted a paw, it passed over a think scar an stopped at two bumps in her fur (horn stubs getting ready to break through the skin). Sitting up she looked around and figured she was at the lab still. Cold sleek metal walls with shinning metal floors. There was a large lump not far from her, she wanted to know what it was. Standing up she stretched out with a yawn and put a paw accidentally in the male's face. With a yip of shock she realized she hadn't dreamed all that up. Sniffing at his face she began to fill with renewed energy. She pawed at face and tugged at his ears with excitement. "Momma!" she shouted in her squeaky voice. She growled and grumbled playfully as she pulled at his ear again to wake him up.

"Hey kid." Jarek said softly, somewhat tired but also relieved. It kinda...irked him she was calling him "momma" but at the moment, he could care less. She certainly was a tough little tyke; Cripes, she had taken a a bullet to the head, been put under stasis conditions that even adults could barely handle, and god only knew what she had had to suffer under those devils hiding beneath the guise of "scientists"...

He eyed the stubs of horns with something akin to curiosity and apprehension. A product of some strange experiment, or something far more sinister? Her durability was definitely not normal... Only time would tell what she would become...

Remembering where he was, he got wearily to his feet. "Come on now," he nudged her with her nose, trying to make the mood lighter despite the grimness of the reality, what with the fried Altered nearby serving as a blatant reminder. He set his pack on the ground gesturing for her to get in. "Sit tight. Uncle Jarek's gonna get you outta here, alright?"

He had to try to reach the surface, to see if the Altered still held sway, though he was already pretty well convinvced they were... and to escape out into a different world.

Her head twittered to the sides as she listened to him and did as he gestured. Once in the pack and ready to go she started trying to mimic him words. A, aa, AY, hAY, HAY, hay hay hay hay hay!!! she wiggled with joy as the words started rolling out. outta outta outta unkil!

"Unkil, outta, hay-r all ight?" She asked wanting to know if they were leave the lab like place and not coming back. Her head throbbed and she lifted a paw to rub at the weird nubs. gass. gaas, glss, glllas, galass, "Gal-a**?" she asked wondering what it meant.

"That's right. Yer name's Glass. Gluh- aass." he smiled, a odd warmth filling him, then gently lifted her into the bag, strapping her in securely. "Don't touch them things." he warned, glancing at the grenades that also took up the confines of the pack.

He may not have ever been a parent, nor could he remember his clearly, and he was not the most "safe" oriented wolf, but even he realized that having a baby around explosives (albeit, explosives that were unlikely to go off if you didn't know what notch to click with a fang,) was probably not the safest bet.

But judging by the Altered still twitching as electricity coursed through its dead body, it was better to have them and not need them, then to need them and not have them.

He opened the pack once more, glancing at his little passenger. "I'm serious now, Glass. Do. Not. Touch them." he made his face grow stormy, to better influence the order. "You touch 'em wrong, they get mad, and beep, then go BOOM. So you keep that nose and them paws clear." that being said, he set the lid back down.

Sidling it back up on his shoulders, he proceeded to the door. A solid few minutes of hacking opened it and he quickly trotted through as they slid back behind him, leaving him in total darkness.

That in itself was not a good sign. The fact that the power grid had apparently been completely knocked offline was a huge red flag. Cautiously a series of lights flared on his arm, illuminating the path. What he saw made his fear complete. The thick, almost skin like spread of Corruption had penetrated even here, in the bowels of the city. Going to the surface would be pointless. The Altered had won.

He glanced back at the bunker that had kept them safe all these years and felt some pity. It had apparently been luck that had awakened them in time before the Corruption had penetrated their safe haven. There was nothing he could do for the sleeping humans except pray the door would hold...

At least there were no Altered he could smell, though that would be difficult with the strange musty scent of Corruption all around. He heard a faint rustle and giggle, and turned his head sharply. "Hey now, lay quiet. Don't make a sound."

He made his way down the now dingy metal halls of the underways, following his inner sense in hope it would lead him out to something...

oOo

They had been traveling for awhile when he suddenly realized two things. One, the hallways had started to branch out less and less and begun to slope back upwards, and two, the smell of the corruption and sights of the sickly, skin like creep had all but vanished. Renewed hope filled him as he found a tall, ancient looking stairway leading upwards. He trotted upwards till it seemed even his trained body would give out when suddenly he was confronted with a small room and a metal door. But even more then that, he caught a whiff of fresh air

There was no panel to access; this one last barrier blocked his way to freedom after a nigthmare of traveling in underground tunnels, never knowing if he would run into an Altered or some other horror in the cavernous, twisted metal darkness.

Like hell it was going to stop him.

"Hold tight Glass. Plug your ears." The markings of the mainframe below his skin flared with orange-light now tinted red as he used his last reserves that had been slowly powering from his body heat.

He charge the door, slamming it full on with his head- He felt nothing, like a tank as the metal burst before him, screeching and crashing noisily from its hinges.

He immediately turned off the charge and hissed as pain flooded his body. Berserker had its benefits, but it sure sucked when it was gone...

The metal shack stood alone alongside a small industrial complex, the ground cracked and dry but mercifully free of Corruption; in the distant he could see the ruined city, now dark and silent under the night sky. It appeared by fate or luck alone, he had found a service tunnel safely coming out far from the outskirts.

They were free.

So much had happened as emotion which he had shoved aside ever since he had found this small ball of fur rolled up in the base of a tree, since he had gone from suicidal, to such willful desire to survive...

He was exhausted beyond measure, hungry and depleted, filled with a malestrom of feelings of bitterness, releif, pain and too many others to name but he was outside and at least here, there was a chance.

They were free.

With his last bit of energy, he trotted out from the shack and into the main courtyard, set down and opened the pack so she could experience this moment with him. He had done it. He had gotten her and himself out of the city he had thought was to be his grave. It was a miracle.

"Look button. Its the sky." It seemed far too simple a phrase, and she seemed to young to fully understand its implications for this moment, this mood. But somehow he hoped she would understand. "We made it. Were free."

Without even realizing it he had curled up around the pack and was already nearly asleep. Before sleep took him however he realized two things once more.

His job was not over. They may have escaped the nightmare of the city, but survival was still not done. It might be even harsher out here then he could imagine. And two, they were still two odd-ball wolves in the middle of a strange new world held under the sway of a man-made apocalypse gone wrong. Things looked grim, but not even these thoughts could extinguish the flame of hope and determination to do everything in his power to ensure her survival.

Orange eyes glanced at the little furred head peeking from the pack, so suddenly this task had dropped into his lap, so soon. But he knew the burning in his chest. He loved her. As soon as he had seen her frail little form still so trusting after all she had suffered, still so frail, yet so strong he had. He would protect her with his life.

Yeah, the open world up here probably sucked now. But he welcomed it anyway. He would face it head on.

Keeping as still as possible she tired to ignore the small surges of pain coming from her head and now her back. Only a whimper here and there as they traveled slipped through her throat.

Once the pack was opened she slowly and carefully crawled out. Fallowing his head she looked up "ssskiee" she repeated until she finally got the word out, "sky" happiness pulsing through her.

Turning with a jump she looked at the now sleeping wolf. Small pain burst made her paw at her head and scratch at her back. The skin over the lump above her right eye broke open, a sharp red horn tip now shown. Once the pain resided she began pawing at the dry ground. Happy with how the floor moved she started digging. Covered in dirt and in a hole nearly as big as her she climbed out.

Unkill still asleep she started sniffing around. Her nose bumped into a hot hard thing. She bit and barked at it. Swatting it with her paw made it move and she froze. Eyes wide she moved close and tried to pick it up in her mouth. She dropped it a few times but soon got it over to Unkill. Setting it down she nudged it closer to his nose to show him what she found, thin tail making small whopping sounds as it cut through the wind.

After a few minutes she began to wander again. She padded in circles, getting a little farther each time. Her eyes watched the white smoke floating around above her. She tried to jump and catch it. She wanted to show it to Unkill. Frustrated she made a few sharp barks that her throat weren't ready to make. Going back to rolling around for awhile a think brown needle stuck her. With a quick yelp she hid behind Unkill.

Slowly she built up the courage to see what it was. Tapping it lightly it was deemed dull. Moving backwards she dragged and rolled the object near the hard one.

Tired from her exploration she wiggled under Jarek's neck and between his front legs and fell fast asleep.

Jarek-Norad
Be careful if you get up fast the hole is right by your rump, oh and shes covered in dirt.

He thought he was dreaming for a moment as he felt the afternoon sun making his circuitry thrum enthusiastically but no- The events from the night before came rushing back. That, and something fuzzy appeared to be blocking his nose. He moved to brush it away when he saw it to be little Glass burrowed closely into his neck fur.

Tenderly he m,oved out from ehr so as not to disturb her sleeping and stretched, surveying their surroundings. The station was badly damaged from exposure to the weather and lack of care. The courtyard was devoid of any green life, not even weeds, and the soil was dry and cracked.

A rumbling in his stomach reminded him he hadn't eaten in...years, so to speak. He had a small stash of ration packs in his bag, but it would at most last them a few days, even less without water...

They would have to move and pray that they reached some source of water; he was half a mind to go back down the tunnel when the thought of how the Corruption had eroded the sweage ways; probably any water sources there were contaminated by now...

He nudged the little pup with his nose, feeling the hit roll of the black top, stifling, but also in someway comforting. "Up and at 'em, champ."

Glass bounced up shouting "UnKill!!" loudly and rolled in the dry dirt happily. She padded around him before they set out. She didn't know where they were going but was happy to fallow along. She picked random things like rocks, twigs, and patches of dry dirt to carry along with her.

Soon the puppy stopped walking and collapsed to the ground. Her eyes looked to Jarek unknowing how to explain what was wrong. Her stomach grumbled loudly and she swiped her tongue over her nose.

Her head throbbed and she started thinking about what had happened. Thankful for her life she wished there was some kibble out here. Sitting up she rose a back paw and scratched hard at the scar. She felt her skull healing around the strange metal object. She looked at Jarek with a lost look. Slowly she stood up and started walking with him, she knew sitting here wouldn't bring food like back in the labs.

Jarek-Norad
Her body is starting to develop the metal bending and sooner or later the bullet in her head will get pushed out.

And we need to get to the city fast and meet rail, remember he has to meet and leave up before the others can get here.

They had been traveling for quite a bit when he heard her fall and he turned. A loud grumble came from her stomach and he frowned. He had to remember she was just a kid, not conditioned as he had been, though he was getting pretty hungry...

"I'll carry you. Here, eat this..." he dragged out a small container and ripped the foil open. Rations weren't particularly tasty, but they were filled with nutrients at least.

When she had finished eating, he edged her into his pack, setting her in the straps loosely. He finished whatever she had not been able to eat and turned towards the south, the sun setting on his right.

There was nothing but empty wilderness before him... But despite the humans attempt to shield information of their whereabouts, he knew there was a subservient R.C.A somewhere to the South... with luck, he might be able to find it.

Praying to whatever deity watched over the wulven-kind, he went off at a steady gait into the unknown.

oOo

Four days he had been traveling, and he was running out. He could feel his muscles groaning from the relentless use. His food supplies was running low; he had been abstaining from it in order to preserve the little pup, but it was starting to affect him...

Then as if out of nowhere, he found it.

A dust storm had been blowing up nearly blinding him and he was beginning to despair, when suddenly he nearly collided with a twisted scrap of metal. Excited, he pushed past it till he found the ruins of a road and some great ominous looking wall of steel like some huge beast rising from the dust storm's sandy view.

He managed to find a old sewer grate on the outside and tore it open with his fangs before leaping down into the stench y darkness.

Out of the storm, he tried to cough the dirt from his lungs, setting the lights on his arm on. "You alright, Glass? Uncle Jarek found someplace to stay..." he wheezed, looking about. The water had long since dried up, but the hieous smell was still prevalent. Overhead the winds shrieked and he pressed a little further into the darkness, towards the city...

Rail moved through the buildings with ease. He had lived within these walls for many years now. Coming to call this place home was harder than he had thought. Hate of this place was clear in his soul but he couldn't leave, there was nothing left in this world.

The wolf had taken shelter in a large human apartment building. On the fifth floor he was able to see the streets. Altered had slowly began to dissipate and leave the city. Therefore making this the safer option. Here he had food, water, and a dry place to sleep. The building were falling apart but at least no humans came to try and take over. Rail could live his lonely life here happily.

Well he wasn't completely alone. Colt, the white raven stayed at his side by day, and scouted the out-lands by night.

Most of the larger creatures had left, but the small ones that wouldn't make it stayed. The wolf didn't mind them much. They, in a way, accepted him as one of them. Most left him alone and the ones that didn't he would link to and send away. Pity was a horrible thing.

Rail understood it wasn't the creatures fault they were how they were. He was a fine example himself. Humans did this. They caused the end of the world, and therefore the end of life.

The wolf moved to a large window in one of his favorite apartments. He had to crash out the glass with his horns long ago. The food here was beginning to go bad, uneatable by even the altered monsters. Rail was ready to give up on life. Ready to walk into the darkness of the sewers and allow anything down there to kill him, hoping it was swiftly.

Curling up on the bed he let his mind wander as Colt took flight out to the north. Rail knew that if he fell asleep with the bird to close it could potentially kill him. His mind fought for death but his soul, filled with unseen life, always prevailed.

Glass stayed quiet in the bag this time. The darkness scared here. Never in the lab had it ever been so dark. She whimpered once but stopped herself. Changing her attention to a small metal thing she began playing with it within the carrying bag.

Whenever they would stop once Jarek lets her out he might be taken back. Blood covered the white fur on her head as the bullet scar would be split open and her playing with the object. Also both horns would have broken skin and be little sharp points above her eyes.

The little pup had not made a peep and though her silence had been at his request it somehow...unnerved him. He peered into the darkness that even his optic enhancements couldn't pierce. There was no noise said for a steady drip of water far off in the distance.

Deciding to take a quick break, he set the pack on the ground, letting the warm glow of light from the markings on his mechanical arm further light up the area.
"Alrighty hun, is every- Holy s***t!" he yanked the bag open further as he took in the dark stain and the familiar, horrifying scent of blood; for a second pure terrified concern rolled through him till he saw the two green eyes glint back at him with surprise and not pain. He quickly took her out by the scruff of her neck as carefully as he could. barely registering some metallic object going "clink" onto the concrete.

"Ah, hold still youngin', s***t," he broke into a cacophony muttering of both swears and reassurances as he tried to quell his near parental-panic (though he would not dare admit it to himself. An outsider would find the scene heartwarming silly if not for the blood oozing from the pups face. He cleaned the wound as best he could with a combination of licks and application of copious amounts of medigel, so much in fact the pups face had a rather significant blob sticking from it.

When he had nudged her around effectively with his nose checking for wounds and had convinced himself that she was in no immediate danger, he sat down wearily. "You alright Glass?" as he spoke, he noted the curious metal object he had sent rolling from the confines of his pack and investigated it before freezing.

It was a .22 caliber round. Covered in her blood.

Shocked, he glanced at the pup, noting the wounds placement. He had seen many things in his rather odd life, but this was a first. Bullets did not just fall out. And he could speak from personal experience as he glanced at the scar on his flank from the round that had neared shattered his pelvic bone.

But there would be not time for questions as a breathy hiss and slithering scales had him scoop the pup into the pack and onto his back in an instant as he whirled to confront the noise- the foul smell of an altered rolled from the darkness before him-

The jaws lunged forward, he ducked and let the energy in his arm build pressure-

The concrete and stell of the pipe beneath his metal paw ruptured; a geyser of high pressure water steaming hot spewed, pinning the unknown beast shrieking to the ceiling; but he was already long gone, running- the noise would attract others-

He ran through the darkness relying on instinct, reflex and his nose alone to guide him as they surged from every cesspool, every drain-

A circle of light- a ladder in the distance; he half flew up it; but wolves werent built for ladders-

The bars beneath him shook violently, metal screeching as whatever monster below ripped it from the brackets; he slipped, he was falling, the circle of light so close, now falling away as he tumbled towards demise...

One last trick, one last idea-

"Oy, hold on Glass!" he roared.

He twisted like a cat in the air; darkness below but he could see the faint glowing of eyes, of the writhing twisted flesh and fangs as it surged up to greet him;

There was a highpitched wind as the Overcharge kicked in, the red-flare of light in the fist as a tiny looking rocket like object ejected, at the same time,a pulsing resonation of a shock wave-

The wave of heat and energy as the "cricket" bomb burst before his eyes sending flesh before it the smell of sewage and altered and singed hair; combined with the shock wave sent him flying, flying up out of the manhole sewer in to glorious daylight as below the monsters screamed-

He landed none to gracefully on his side, skidding into the dust- his ears were deafened ringing, his limbs trembling but still in place as he gasped for breath.

Shakily he got to his feet, glancing about at the ruined city before taking off on stumbling legs; the noise would attract them- he had to get away into the safety of an apartment building-

He ran.

A loud bang awoke Rail. His eyes shot open and he jumped back. "What was that?" He asked quickly. The white bird flew threw the air to the area the noise came from. A form stood up and ran not noticing the bird. Rail was to high up and couldn't make out what it was. He turned to leave the small room and went to the halls to make his way down a few floors.

Colt snapped at the tail of the running wolf seeing he wasn't altered and therefore pinning him as safe. The bird didn't have enough of a mind to think of the dangers this could cause. It flew a little higher than the wolfs head and fallowed them. It attempted to lead them to the lower parts of the building it knew so well.

Finally reaching the second floor he smashed in a door and went to the window. His eyes searched trying to find the escaping form but he couldn't locate it. He reached down the mental link to Colt and placed the order to come back in it's head.

With a loud squawk the bird made a quick turn and flew up the side of the building. It perched on the window's ledge and twerked its head at Rail.

Rail still unable to see what Colt was looking towards glanced out at the roads. Many altered were pounding down the road in the direction of the manhole. Maybe the fleeing form would be safe and they would not come this way. Rail lowered himself to the ground and slowly moved to the door. Any movement could trigger a corrupted and send the whole group this way.

Making it to the stairway he peaked through the human things (couches, fridges, tables) trying to see if something had come into the building.

Colt stayed on the outside of the building for a moment while Rail moved away but quickly went to investigate the sound once more with the other altered. Even though Rail controlled his mind most the time he still had urges to join the other altered.

Ohhh, this was bad. He didn't need to be a genius to figure that out. The air was alive with the screeches, snarls and assortment of other chaotic noises filling the air as the Corrupted were drawn by the noise and promise of fresh meat.

Terror made his feet have wings as he streaked through the city as far from the initial site as he could, keeping to the shadows and staying out of the main road; There was a huge rush as he caught sight of swarms of infected humans and creatures alike swarm towards the ruptured sewer pipe-

A Hunter-Class, its horns protruding from its head and its limbs long and lanky caught sight of him, giving an odd chirping sound. Several Corrupted around it changed their focus and began to give chase...

He skidded down an alley,desperate- A infected bird made a few nabs at the end of his tail-

An apartment complex, its bottom level filled with couches and assortment of other failed barriers; but near the base, a tiny tunnel, just big enough to squeeze through- He dove in, dropping a few explosive charges to cover behind him.

As he wormed his way through, he heard the resounding boom and screeches of pain as the chasing infected fell and were devoured by their comrades; their was a screech of metal and rumbling of concrete. Part of the wall must have caved in; Everything became abruptly muffled as he lay still as a statue, then silent.

He released the breath he didn't realize he had been holding. "Glass, kid- you alright?" a faint whimper confirmed him and he continued to worm his way through the barriers. Some were far more sturdy, but he smashed through them in his state of overdrive.

Finally, after some careful "finess" he made his way into what appeared to be an old lobby; a few corrupted, long since sealed away from the outside world staggered towards him, but he took them out quietly, his jaws crunching through skulls and the tiny "pew" of his shoulder-mount finishing others. They were nearly blind, weak, proving easy prey.

He spat out the blood in his mouth grimly when finally there was silence, wiping what he could on a nearby shirt. Training had helped him learn not to swallow, but the less there was in his mouth the better. Weariness filled him and he sat for a moment to rest, the flashlight on his arm lit up as he observed the room. He set the pack a ways back in the tunnel he had formed to better hide it from view.

"Don't go anywhere kid, a'ight? Stay there." Carefully, he began to investigate the other rooms, ready to take out anymore hostiles...

Rail had finally worked up the guts to go to the first floor. With Colt's scent on him as long as he stayed a good distance away the Altered wouldn't bother with him. Just as he poked him head through a small opening and came nose to nose with a large male creature. At first whiff it seemed like a normal unaltered but Rail quickly pulled his head back and fled back up stairs whimpering and tail tucked between his legs.

A head adorned with horns abruptly popped into view from between some of the barriers leading to the upper floors, making him freeze-

For one split second he thought the jaws would open, cursed his lack of catioun; how had he not noticed the approaching scent of this hunter-class Altered? But wait-

Suddenly to his utmost suprise, the head's eyes widened and jerked back into the hole, he heard it whimper as it ran.

Bewildered, he quickly recovered grimly- Whatever strange altered this was, it was still a danger- he had to take it out to make the environment safe-

He snarled, throwing a charge into the hole and it gave a small boom, widening the entrance- He began to step through, but stopped; he could not risk leaving Glass here, not when he had not finished scouting the safety of these rooms.

He dashed back and seized the pack without explanation. "Hang tight hunny, It's just me, Uncle Jarek." he whispered loudly to call him from his abrupt return.

With that, he dashed towards the pathway leading up, grimly smelling the air for his quarry. Something was odd about the scent though...
