She'd been ready with a retort. She was in danger no matter what she did, it was life on the Island. Being around Jake didn't change that. But he'd kept talking...and the more he spoke, the more his words stung.

She did understand. That's what made it so very terrible.

"I'm sorry. I am selfish," she spoke the words with care, keeping her voice steady. "I do know. Twice I've seen you impaled, and twice there was next to nothing I could do about it. I've watched you die. I know how much it hurts. I'm selfish, Jake. I didn't want to watch that again. ... It was bad enough, after, with you bleeding and..." She stopped, trying really hard not to cry.

She was going to have stop talking to him soon. He was getting way too worked up. She felt horrible for that.

"I'm...I'm not asking for it to work out, Jake. You don't want it and....I'm already selfish enough. I just... ******** me for caring."

He was getting tired and drowsy, doing his best to fight the sedatives. The ache growing in his chest was the only thing helping to keep him conscious at the moment, but he knew fighting the meds wasn't going to help his injuries. Not like it mattered anyways. Once Caelius found out he made it back... or did he know already? Regardless, a weaponless hunter was as good as dead. It was only a matter of when.

"They hurt you too, didn't they?" he managed to mumble. "That scar..." He lifted a hand, pointing at the back of his neck. He had remembered, when she first told him about the horsemen, and he had saw, that night she had came to his room, that night, when she...

His head was spinning, and he shut his eyes. He didn't want to remember. Why was all of this happening? Why was everything so complicated?

"I shouldn't be someone you shed tears for. You know nothing about me. If you knew who I was...what happened in the past..."

He let out a sigh, tired and ragged.

"No one wanted me. They all thought I was better off dead. Any friend I made ended up betraying me. It was then I decided I was better off alone. I didn't need anyone. I would never rely on anyone else. But then I got selfish. The one person who believed in me, the one person who trusted me. They... they got killed because of me. I thought I could erase my past life when I became a hunter, but history has a funny way of repeating itself. I despised Chester, hated him, insulted him, yet that dumbass refused to give up on me. And now look what happened to him. I don't... want the same thing to happen to you too."

He lowered his head, shoulders shaking as he buried his face in his hands.
"Please, Sherry, I don't want to lose you too. I can't take any more of this."

Her hand went to her neck, but she didn't answer. They had, and it had been painful, but so much other stuff had happened and... She was actually a little bit surprised her nightmares didn't include vines.

"Jake..." He'd been right. She knew next to nothing about his past. He'd refused to share it with her. Chester had... and Jake, just confirmed it. All of it. Or at least most of it.

Against her better judgement, Sherry put a hand on his shoulder. It was probably more for her than for him, but she did it. "I don't want to lose you either."

If she were close enough, she would hear a soft sniffling sound, and probably little drops of liquid hitting the bed covers. Being torn between pushing her away for her safety and the thought of actually losing her was taking its toll on him. He couldn't stand it anymore.

It took her a moment, but she deduced that the unthinkable was happening. Jake was...crying. Maybe. It wasn't entirely unthinkable, Sherry cried all the time. Usually in private...or in front of Jake... but... The mission had been awful. He was wounded, Chester was broken, and Jake was clearly upset. So... it wasn't really all that unthinkable. Hell, Sherry would have been crying the moment she woke up.

So, she didn't say anything. Not at first. After she'd stood there biting her lip and trying to figure out the best course of action, Sherry went with her gut. Sitting down next to him as best she could, on leg definitely off the bed, Sherry wrapped her arms around his shoulders and hugged him.

To be honest, he didn't even know why. Something in him had just... snapped, and the burden he had carried had seemed extremely overwhelming. He had shared all his problems with Chester, but with him gone, his mind had been utterly quiet, perfect for breeding thoughts of guilt and doubt, questioning his purpose as a hunter, questioning his usefulness as a human being. He came here with nothing, so why did it hurt to think that he would leave with nothing?

He flinched slightly when Sherry wrapped her arms around him, but made no move to push her away, only letting out a tired sigh as he tried to wipe his tears. How embarrassing, crying in front of a girl.

"I'm... fine now. You don't have to worry anymore. You can leave now."

She caught the flinch, but she didn't pull away at it. Not now. Not until... He asked her to.

She kept her arms light, not wanting to aggravate injuries she'd cried over for ages. Or hurt him.

"I don't have to do a lot of things, Jake," she whispered it, since they were kind of next to each other. "But I do them. And...I could have left at any time."

His hand reached out, touching her arm softly.
"T-then... can you stay a bit... at least until I've fallen asleep?"
He was being selfish again. So selfish.
To be honest, after everything that happened, he wasn't sure if he'd even be able to sleep at all, but... somehow, the thought of her leaving was more than he could bear. Perhaps the thought of being truly utterly alone terrified him. Without Chester, everything felt too quiet. Perhaps Sherry would be the one to fill that void. At least... for now.

To be brutally honest, his request was not at all what she'd been expecting. She'd expecting another round of 'leave me alone' and all that wonderful stuff. She even had her answer to it prepared and waiting in her pocket. After everything, after this, it was probably going to stay there.

"Yes," she said. "I can do that."

If he hadn't been drugged up so much, he would indeed still be attempting to fight about her staying here, but between having already been battling this ever since the matter came to light, he was fighting with himself internally... and losing to the part that desired- no, craved the presence of another. He felt warm and safe in her arms, and though part of him knew he shouldn't, that he shouldn't be encouraging this if he wanted to keep her safe, the selfish part of him told him to cling onto the one lifeline he had left on this godforsaken island. Without Sherry, he would lose any last shard of meaning, the very will to continue living on despite everything.

"I don't... want to.... lose you..." he mumbled sleepily as he ended up slumping over on her shoulder, barely able to keep conscious for long.

"You won't," she replied. "I'm not going anywhere." She meant it, as long as she could help it. So she sat there, letting fall asleep where he may (fully intending to get him laying down proper before anyone yelled at her), because he'd asked her to.

Truth be told, she wasn't entirely certain what to make of things now. Oh well. Time would, probably help with that.

It was probably a good thing the sedatives started kicking in as they did, or Jake may have actually ended up pushing Sherry away, something he'd learn to regret should he actually be successful.

And then at some time he had entirely fallen asleep... on Sherry's shoulder.

She waited until she was certain he was asleep, then she carefully made sure his head found it's way back to the pillow on the bed.

It was entirely possible that after that she found herself a chair and made herself comfy. She stayed for a bit.
