"I know." The words were quiet, quieter than even the whispers already were. The dark-haired girl did not know if Mimistrobell hated Knights or not. She was certain, however, that the dark ministrations given to her, scary and invasive as they had been, had been specifically because she was a Senshi. A possible convert. Someone to mislead and to try and bring into the shadow. "I got lucky, this time."

Tears brimmed her eyes as she listened to Paris recount their misadventure. She couldn't help herself. She had seen injuries herself but nothing on the level that her friend had had to endure. He was older than her as a Senshi; but more than that, he lived, and loved, intently. To see Chris reduced... for Chris to see how it affected him... "Of course you weren't there!" Penelope blurted out her words with less than her usual level of finesse and far louder than their situation allowed for. She instantly realized her mistake, paling all the way down the hands that moved over to try and take Paris's. Her voice lowered back to the hushed tones the trio had been using. "You had to get them out. No one could blame you for that... no one. If not for that, Chris might not... you did the right thing, Paris. You have to know that."

When it came to the future... she closed her watery eyes for a moment and tried to concentrate. Perhaps figuring out what the plan was would be a way of preparing for the future but... her brain just kept cycling over it. She pressed her chin into her hand, and she drew back on her own, more limited experience. "During the Surrounding... when they attacked the city, what did it do? Distract us... gather resources? Their last ambush... scattered us. Maybe... they are preparing for a bigger strike, like Chris said? Or maybe they're trying to show... that we can't stand against them?"

Her eyes opened again, fire burning deep inside of them as she whispered, "If the latter's the case... they could not be more wrong."

Chris listened to the exchange between Paris and Penelope in silence as he picked at the pieces of sandwich he’d pulled apart. He wasn’t very hungry, but knew that it would make Paris feel better if he at least tried. The same went for Paris of course, but… He and Penelope were right, as much as he hated to admit.

He’d needed Paris’s help that night, as did Lily. After what had happened to them, they were all but helpless. Chris doubted he would have been able to defend himself very well, and had they not left at that time, well… who knew what might have happened when faced with even more youma and agents of chaos?

Instead, he kept quiet, leaning an elbow on the table to he could rest his head. It was heavy and it didn’t help that he got easily fatigued. It was getting better than before, but he definitely wasn’t at the top of his game. Even if Paris allowed him coffee, he doubted it would do much.

He couldn’t help the small smile at Penelope’s enthusiasm, and he looked up to see how intent she was on following through with her promise that those trying to kill them would always be met with resistance.

Paris let Penelope take his hands and accepted the comfort and reassurances from her and tried for a small, appreciative smile, but there was still a part of him that felt guilty for not participating in the last of the battle, even if it would have likely been impossible to do so and keep both Val and Maia safe at the same time. He'd done what he'd needed to in order to keep them both alive, and he supposed it was true that no one could really fault him for that.

At the time, it hadn't been a difficult decision to make. After the fact, however, he often wondered if there might have been another way.

“Maybe they're just bored,” Paris suggested. It was easier to discuss the motives and tactics of the other side than to continue considering his own actions—or lack of them, as the case may be.

“This seems to be a common thing of theirs. Go quiet for a while and then stage a big attack like this, like, 'Surprise! We're still around~!' as if the youma weren't enough to tell us that,” Paris said. “That makes summer camp, the Surrounding, the ambush, and now a carnival. Clearly we should just never organize big get-togethers, and the city shouldn't ever hold any major events. No Harvest Festival, no Christmas Parade.”

Of course, canceling any and all events seemed to Paris like conceding defeat. That was not a message Paris was at all prepared to give; if they couldn't go about their normal lives anymore then, as far as he was concerned, they'd already lost.

“That's probably what they want, to scare us all away,” he said. “Too bad for them it doesn't seem to be working.”

"Likely it is to show us they still exist. What I don't understand is how people can be taken in by that Tag Swagger's lies when the evidence of Negaverse evil is all around them." Penelope mumbled the last words, never letting go of Paris's hands. The spreading of lies bothered her tremendously. "Everyone's seen a youma and no one can say they do good. So how can those that partner with them be anything but bad?"

She often had no way of knowing if her small efforts made any difference. That was true both in her life as Penelope Seneca and as Sailor Pasiphae. The smiles that Chris and Paris gave, however small, was enough to soothe her heart. All of the moments of pain, all of the worry and the fear... as long as she had her friends, her family, and time to reaffirm those ties, they could be overcome. She would continue to toil with her small efforts, support those who could do a better job than her... and hold onto the warmth.

"And it will never work," Penelope added. She released one of Paris's hands to take up one of Chris's. "Not as long as we have each other."

Penelope was one of the sweetest, kindest girls Chris had the pleasure of knowing, and it broke his heart to know how deeply involved she was in this war. To see a heart as warm as hers so troubled by the darkness presented to them because of Chaos… it made him wish there was something more he could do.

And maybe there was…

“We will have each other,” he promised with a tired smile, giving Penelope’s hand a squeeze at an attempt at comfort. It wasn’t much but for now, it was the best he could give.

But later, when he was no longer feeling weak and helpless, there was so much more they could do. They had the means — they might be scattered across the city, but there were still friends and allies who he was certain would band together if they needed them.

They might not be much of an actual team, and they would definitely be needing more than just their current group to stand up to Chaos, but he was sure that as long as they had a collective effort against the darkness, it would be okay in the end.

“Next time, I’m buying,” he added as a side note, eyeing everything that had been bought for him with a weak grimace. He was in no state to complain, but he would make up for their kindness when they met up again.

Paris could think of little else to say, but nodded and met them both with a small smile.

He was not confident. The two and a half years he'd spent involved in this war—and, indeed, many of the occurrences in his civilian life during that time—had taken much of his former confidence and the pretension with which he'd once faced the world and trampled upon it until there was little of it left. With each battle, each reminder that Chaos still lingered, and that those who served it were still about causing pain and destruction, he realized more and more how woefully outmatched they often were. This last reminder hit much closer to home than usual, and Paris was still struggling to cope.

Still holding tight to Penelope's hand, Paris took one of Chris's and squeezed convulsively. He struggled to maintain his composure, to keep the torrent of emotions off of his face and hide the fact that this had so upset him, but the grip of his hands on theirs was a dead give-away. He was afraid for them—afraid for Penelope, afraid for their friends, afraid for Chris, and afraid for himself.

But somehow, beneath it, in the touch of their hands, in their smiles, in the sounds of their voices, Paris could still find hope. Often it was fleeting, and deeply buried beneath the terror of the moment, but he held to it as tightly as he held to Chris's and Penelope's hands, and it would take much more than this to make him let go of it.

One day they wouldn't have to talk about these things. One day they'd be able to look back and be thankful that it was over, and the war would be nothing more than a terrible memory. One day they'd just be meeting here as normal friends, and not because they'd been in so much danger, not because one of them had had their starseed ripped from them, and nearly lost.

“One day all this'll be worth something,” he said to them quietly.

And he had to believe that.
