"Okay," Evan panted as he pushed his way onto the course against the protests of the senior hunters running it. "Last time. Let's get it right." Even if they didn't get it right, he could feel that he and his weapon were starting to get a little closer to an actual partnership. More than that, his anger had expended itself in the shadowy flesh of the creatures that he and Gir alternately felled and fell to. Now he was running on pure stubbornness. This time when Gir's charge expended itself, Evan didn't share the same sense of vicious elation as his weapon as strongly as he had before. He felt clearheaded enough to keep on swinging without having to wait a moment to come down from a high that wasn't really his; that was an accomplishment all on its own. The second charge cut through the shadowlings like they were tissue paper, leaving both weapon and wielder feeling content and somewhat sleepy. After the maulings Evan had taken and the drowsiness shared by Gir after both of his charges had been spent, Evan was pretty much done. He saw the one safe spot among the oncoming wave of shadowlings, and while the temptation was there to keep on slashing, he was also exhausted. They had more than accomplished what they had set out to do and had made huge strides in learning to work together as partners. This time, when the shadowlings came, Evan let them.
