"Coulda fooled me," Gale muttered, half to himself, half to Otto, arms still folded tightly across his chest as he looked away from the other.
The insult to his house made his face flush red.
"You know, for a moment, I thought you might actually be human," Gale snapped, cheeks bright with color as he whipped his head around to glare at Otto. "Forgive me for thinking you had a shred of decency and normalcy in you, because you clearly don't."
Well, he'd been trying to act civilized, guess it wasn't going to work so well.

Otto wasn't sure what part of Gale's retort made him more upset, but suddenly he just didn't want to deal with the little British bugger anymore. The teen huffed and pushed past Gale, his face going red to match his fellow Deathy. "Like I care what you think.." He growled angrily. Not human? Of course he was human. They all were. Right? Otto could have tried to prove he was, but every word from Gale just made Otto want to piss him off some more. A lot of people made him feel like that. Mostly guys. Almost always guys.

He was frustrated.
Why couldn't they ever just see eye to eye? Why couldn't they seem to connect, the way others did? They were close enough in age that they should have been able to bond over that, so why was it that they couldn't quite seem to focus together?
Maybe because Otto was a selfish prat.
Gale grabbed Otto's arm as he shoved past him, twisting him back around to face him.
"You already won, all right?" he snapped, and his face was red with both embarrassment and frustration. "You got the girl, you got what you wanted, so why can't you just let me be?"

Otto winced as he was grabbed, about ready to punch Gale with his good arm. That is, until Gale said something that stopped him. Otto visibly seemed to soften ever slighter, his brows knit together in confusion rather than anger. Got the girl? Got all he wanted? Won? Otto didn't feel like a winner, though he often felt smug at times knowing Eva had chosen him over Gale. "Ain't.. like I sought ya out.. or rubbed it in.." He muttered, seeming to rethink his statement part way through. Had he? Otto's irritation and heated temper seemed to deflate, unsure of the reason he actually hated Gale. His focus on Gale still seemed skeptical at best. Otto was never good at getting along with people, especially other guys. Maybe it was because him and Gale were so similar that he had the most trouble with him.

He had expected a snappy retort, a snarky reply. Something Otto-ish.
Instead he got confusion.
Gale's own brows drew together in bemusement, and his grip on Otto's arm loosened slightly until he let go entirely, his hand falling back against his side. His fingers curled into a fist, though it was not a tight one, more of Gale trying to keep himself moving, occupied, because if he didn't, he might have just slapped Otto the way he had slapped Jake.
"No," he agreed, in an even tone of voice. "No, you didn't seek me out. But since when have you ever treated me like a normal human being? All I am to you is that annoying guy you like making fun of, that's shorter and younger than you are, which you never stop reminding me of."
Gale sucked in a sharp breath, feeling the frustration welling deeper in the pit of his stomach.
"You may not realize what it is that you do, but you know, I'm not actually the bad guy here."
His throat felt tight.
"Maybe one day you'll actually realize that."

Gale made a good point. Somehow, Otto never saw a reason to treat Gale as anything but a punching bag. Otto had always been shorter, younger than everyone his whole life. So when he finally met someone smaller, he attacked rather than befriended. He thought that it was finally his turn to be the bigger one, the bully. He could take out all his anger and sass on Gale. But now, he was being reminded that Gale was in fact, human. A part of him tried to grin smugly as Gale firmly reminded Otto how often the slightly taller teen did these things so successfully, but another part of him felt actual shame. What became of these mixed feeling was a twist in the corner of his mouth, an uncertain expression that was neither here nor there. He'd become the bully he hated in everyone else; the one who teases and belittles. If he hated it being done to him, why did he feel such compulsion to have it done to someone else? His expression soon faded though. The bad guy? Was there a bad guy, and why was Otto it? Moreover, did he actually feel bothered by it. The teen usually settled that he did in fact enjoy being the bad one, but the longer he spent at Deus, the more he found it got him into worse trouble than back home. Despite the friends he somehow made, there were things he said and did that simply tore great rifts between himself and his supposed companions. In the end, weren't they all here for the same reason? Maybe he'd fallen so far, he'd simply lost sight. Otto had been silent a long while, seemingly contemplating all Gale said to him. Was he actually taking him seriously? "Maybe.." He murmured more so to himself than Gale.

The silence stretched between them, thick and tense, and for a few moments Gale wasn't even sure whether or not Otto had even heard him in the first place - or if he was even thinking of the same thing. And he almost just said forget it and threw up his hands to walk away.
At least until there was a soft mumble from one Otto Graves. A slightly confused sounding, contemplative and maybe even a little lost sounding mumble. Gale felt some of the tensions in his shoulder ease.
"Look," he said quietly. "I don't wanna fight with you, Otto. Because maybe, somewhere underneath all of this - " He waved a hand in Otto's direction. " - there's an actual human heart that cares. In fact, I'm sure there is, because - "
His throat felt unbearably dry all of a sudden. Gale swallowed hard, trying to get the words to form properly.
" - because Eva wouldn't have picked you if she didn't think you had a heart," he said finally, and there was a frustrated, yet resigned tone to his voice. Gale clenched his fist, fingers digging into his palm.
"Eva picked you," he said quietly. "Which makes me think that there is at least some bit of good in you, because she wouldn't have gone for someone who wasn't worth it. Not her. Which means that I have to believe that somewhere, there has got to be some redeeming quality that makes up for the fact that you can act like a total prat most of the time."
He sucked in a breath, leveling a look at Otto, his cheeks pink.
"Because I wouldn't let her go so easily if I thought otherwise."

Otto had trouble expressing himself honestly. Bluntly, yes. Rudely, always. But when it came to matters of the heart, or any weaker and vulnerable things that stemmed from it? He'd put up walls. Thick, concrete walls covered with graffiti to keep everyone away. Eva, among a small handful of others, had managed to punch holes in it. To let Gale anywhere near that was would be an arduous task. A long task. But maybe because they had been throwing bombs at one another so long, perhaps there was a crack in it somewhere. The fact Gale was showing his heart to some extent, and letting go of his pride however hard it was to do; Otto felt maybe he owed it to him to try and understand. To try and talk without hate to blind him. Gale had him thinking; thinking about something that had often weighed down on him regardless of the Brit bringing it up. What redeeming qualities did he have? What did Eva see in him? "Can't say I know why she picked who she did... I mean.. I'm happy and grateful.." And at this point he knew nothing of Gale's own redeeming points as of yet. "But.. I don't particularly think I got much redeeming qualities. I honestly don't."The teen huffed, scratching his nose and averting his eyes. "Yanno, she told me to make nice with you sometime back. I kinda forgot.."

Absently, he clenched and unclenched his hand, as though maybe this would keep him from turning around and walking away right now. A part of him still rebelled against the fact that Eva had chosen Otto, of all people, that she had pushed past the bitter, sarcastic, oftentimes irritating walls that Otto threw up and found herself a place in his heart - and vice versa.
But another part of him understood, because that was exactly who Eva was.
Gale leaned against the nearest wall, shoving his hands into the pockets of his long white coat and staring down at the ground. "Yeah, well," he muttered. "Just because you don't see them doesn't mean anything. I don't particularly see myself as a good person, yet people have told me otherwise."
He lifted his gaze, flicking his eyes towards Otto. "Obviously Eva sees something in you that's worthwhile, and she's not the type to settle for less than what she deserves. And she deserves a helluva lot," he added, with a tight look. "She's good - she's one of the best. And you know that."
There was a small pause. Gale struggled a little internally.
"...she likes you," he said softly. "She has a big heart, and she likes a lot of people, but she picked you, out of everyone she could have, and that should say a lot to you."
Another small pause.
"And that also should mean that you should listen to her about making nice with me every once in a while."

Otto took some solace in the fact there had to be something special about him for Eva to like him so much. He would continue to wonder why, and what made him unique or good. He agreed with one thing more than anything; Eva just seemed way too good for him. Yet here he was. With that, he'd never take for granted her feelings for him. It was special. "This don't mean I gotta stop hasslin' ya altogether, do I?" Otto teased with a relenting huff, though his expression was as always on the sour side. "But sure.. I'm sure I can manage not to be a colossal a** once in a while."He paused a moment, "I'm glad you made it out of Ponyville almost unscathed... It coulda be a lot worse.." He admitted in something just above a mutter. Just because there were people he didn't like, didn't mean he wanted them dead or tortured. Except for maybe Caelius...

Gale gave Otto another Look, but it was less irritated and more just plain exasperated. "I would say yes, but I'm pretty sure it's impossible for you to stop hassling me altogether," he replied dryly, but then his expression softened a little at Jake's next comments, pressing his lips together.
"...thanks," he said finally. Absently he twisted the ring on his index finger, Jinhai silent inside of his head.
"Otto?" said Gale, after a moment. "Can I ask you something?"

"What is it?" Otto lifted a brow, the urge to be sassy strong within him. It took a great amount of restraint not to hassle Gale for little things.

He debated whether or not to actually ask the question (or rather, questions, since there was more than one currently inside of his head), but in the end Gale decided to just go for it.
"How did you, errr...know that you liked Eva? I mean...as more than just a friend."
He felt stupid for asking, and even as he spoke, his cheeks were slightly pink, but Gale held his ground, his head held determinedly high up.

What. Otto's lip curled a bit, trying not to read to deep into why Gale was asking something so personal. "Uh..." Otto shifted uncomfortably, "I don't think there was an actual moment of realization. I just... it just sorta.... grew from one thing to another..." As far as he could remember, anyway. "When I first met her I thought she was annoying and pushy. And a brat. Then a friend who was a brat.. and it just kept goin'.. or sumthin'.." He added passively, trying somehow not to seem too mushy. "Why's this even important?"

His face turned red.
"S'not that important," Gale mumbled, turning quickly away from Otto. "I was just, er, curious, is all."
Maybe if he walked fast enough he'd be able to get away with his dignity still intact.
