Spirits.
The healer was similar with the concept, or simply a concept around which the word spirit was centered. It encompassed a plethora of beliefs ranging from malicious souls to protective beings. At times, it was simply the unlost, unreincarnated piece of the newly dead.
"Perhaps something happened that was out of their control," Zrathi attempted to reason. Her head raised and she took a long breath of the air. The jungle was already so moist, however, that the action did nothing but leave her guessing.
Still, she was sure she could hear the sound of a trickle nearby. Then again, it could merely be wishful thinking making Zrathi hear sounds that simply did not exist.
"Do you hear that?" Maybe her companion would be able to confirm or deny the noise.

"Perhaps," Blota said, but he didn't sound convinced. He wasn't sure what was worse, a world where the spirits had turned their back to them, or a world where the spirits were powerless to stop disaster. Both options made him question the meaning of existing at all.
Zrathi was talking again, and it took him a few moments to process what she had said.
"Hear what?" he asked, and moved his ears to try to hear whatever it was she tried to hear. The jungle was filled with noise once you stopped to listen. A bird calling, probably to warn other creatures about the lions wandering around. The soft crunch of decaying plant matter underfoot. A soft trickle of water.
"The water?" he asked.

"Yes." Relief was apparent in Zrathi's voice. She headed towards the water with a newfound purpose, her footfalls confident from Blota's affirmation. The trees and grass parted readily against her body, and she paused only to wait for his more massive, male, body and to listen.
When they arrived, their water was but a small bubble in a thin stream. Enough to lap one's tongue over, but hardly enough to bathe in.
"Wash out your mouth as best you can," she encouraged him as she dropped her small, leather bag at her feet and nosed out contents onto the dry, clean flap.
"And take a small bite of this and chew it." A knobby, khaki colored root was rolled in Blota's direction. If he chose do listen, its flesh would be hard and white, snapping as he chewed. It would be bitter, foam slightly, and dry his mouth.

Blota followed her to the small water source, and did as he was told without questions. He lapped at the water, unsure if he was supposed to drink or spit it out. To his surprise he felt thirsty, so he swallowed the water before looking at the root she had prepared for him. Following directions felt familiar; a warm feeling of purpose and of being cared for.
He took a bite of the offered root without hesitating. The snap as he bit into it surprised him, but he assumed it was normal. The bitter scent wasn't very pleasant, and he made a face but kept chewing. It didn't occur to him to question her orders or even ask what it was for. If it was important she'd probably tell him.
She didn't have the coloring he expected for it, but she was clearly in touch with the spirits somehow. He wouldn't question a Haruspex, and it had started to feel just as impossible to question Zrathi. What she made him do didn't really make any sense to him, but that in turn made sense. Blota wouldn't put it in those terms, but he had been conditioned from an ealy age to expect others to take care of him and tell him what to do.
