"Tatath, my love, this is the chance we have been waiting for, to meet the rogue gold rider." Canoake made sure their straps were secured and her clothing just so. She had chose to forgo most of her jewelry and fancy scarves for much simpler, holder style clothing. Who knew what type of sense the girl had? "A couple others have already left. I know how you feel about golds but she is needed. I will be on my best behavior if you are, okay?" The woman patted her dragon fondly.

The two went Between and came out a distance before Holdtown. She wanted to fly in and see the area, get a feel for the Land. After all, there might still be a fight on their hands. Tatath rumbled but announced herself politely. After all, she was a green to this gold.

Mercy and Aerith had not officially signed up for this venture, nor were they really invited but the whiterider had decided to come anyways. She had somewhat of a vested interest in Natai and her pretty gold....while not officially a student of her since she wasn't a Trine Weyrling Mercy had still tried to do what she could to help..to at least make sure the dragon and rider learned things safety.

She wasn't entirely sure how much help she had been but she had tried and thus she was intrigued about how things would play out. It was sad to her to think of Natai possibly choosing the Handlers side - Iachixth was a bright spirit, kind and sweet and playful and certainly did not deserve to be relegated to the role of disdained broodmare, beaten down and looked upon as though she was less then the others. No matter what the Handlers proclaimed Mercy was well aware that their words of 'equality' were just that...words. Pretty words with no meaning.

But she didn't hate them, they saw things one way and the riders another - she just rather wished both sides would learn to leave each other alone and live in peace. None of this skulking about trying to hurt the other. Both had suffered...both had to lay down arms.

But she didn't think that was going to happen..and now both sides had prisoners and both sides wanted Natai and Iachixth's support. It was a recipe for disaster, a stewing pot waiting to overflow and Mercy had a feeling that the decision of Natai might be the weight that tipped things over the edge. What a terrible burden to bear.

Mercy had told herself that she wouldn't push one way or the other. But she would show up and she would see what happened. Of course once they landed Aerith took note of those already here.

'Isn't that..' Aerith started and Mercy glanced at Ralla and her green, flinching slightly - recalling the day of the revolution when that former student and her dragon had turned on her own classmates.

'Yes...its..its good they survived without much training..' Mercy told the white.

Aerith snorted 'Better for us perhaps if they had not, they were a hot headed pair.'

Mercy merely pursed her lips rather then replying to the white. Aerith had a point..but Mercy found it hard to wish a bad fate on anyone. 'Just keep here by the Trine dragon.' She told the white before making her way towards the gathered people.

Natai quieted for A'nos' explanation, on semi-aware of the new blueriders appearance. She curled her fingers together and then released them, anxiety souring in the pit of her stomach. The last time she felt this way, Iachixth appeared. None of this situation felt right; tension all but crackled between the riders although S'kiro, as he introduced himself, appeared much more at ease. Whie not surprising to hear C'ross' request, Natai hesitated. She looked between S'dekai and S'kiro, warring with herself to not smile brightly at the new bronzerider.

I told her! Iahixth assured Pioth, quickly, privately. Her nose followed little Nimith to nuzzle close to him and give the blue a quick lick of reassurance at his face in the most undignified of manners. She won't say anything, she' good at lying. Were you not - oh! Oh, right yes - secret. Hello, Pioth! Look how big I am!

"Hello," she said after a long pause, her eyes following up to the sky where a new greenrider had popped in. Iachixth brightened noticably; she loved greens and she trilled a high pitched hello to the scarred female. Natai, or her part, smiled slightly. Manners, manners, all around her. Despite whatever shoved in her gut may say about the situation, no matter what happened, at least for now they could feign civility. "S'kiro, S'dekai. It's nice to meet you both. A few of your fellows are still in the sky."

thank you, new riders, for giving Natai a chance to stall. She moved closer to her dragon, stroking along the bright unmarred hide.

Of course you may land! Iachixth all but beamed happiness at both of the greens, even silent Firith. I love green and blue and bronze and... well, I think brown, I've not met many, but hello! I am Iachixth, come and talk with us. Mine is discussing thing with the others and don't be sorry, it's alright.

Thank you little ambassador, Natai murmured, and then brightened her smile to almost match Iachixth, keeping it toned down as to not seem mocking. She hoped to whatever hoped with the world that it did not come off as mocking or rude.

"C'ross, I'm honored myself, that you want to protect me. I appreciate it, I honestly do. We've only met once but I would very much like to call you a friend," Natai glanced to S'dekai, lingering for only a moment before skipping to A'nos for roughly the same amount of time. Let them think she liked bronzeriders - and she did, S'dekai was very nice and Iachixth fond of Pioth for as long as she remembered him. "But I had hoped I made my intentions clear to both sides of this battle in that I am not going to join either. You were right, A'nos, there is blood on peoples hands and I do not agree with either side."

You're all very nice to be so worried about us, though. I didn't know so many people would be. Iachixth spoke to all the dragons present before squeaking happily, her neck craning up to peer at Mercy and Aerith. She rifled through Natai's memories to find them and her eyes flared blue and green once more. Hello! Welcome back, hello! Mine is talking right now but you should come up and talk too, I think we're having a party. I like parties.

It's not a party, my darling. Natai petted at her again. She felt so small in a very large world, one pitted against what seemed like so many. It scared her. It scared her very much. She wanted to hop on Iachixth and leave, fly away to whatever bit of land they found. "I'm very sorry if that is what everyone has come here about. I don't believe I will be changing my mind."

She didn’t know. Or perhaps she did know – or even just suspected – and she was hiding it well. He’d only met her once, but had gotten a sense even then that Natai was the sort of woman who remained outwardly calm regardless of circumstances. S’dekai had known people like that before: they turned their anger cold and held it inside, only smiling more politely as the situation went worse around them.

But he had to warn her nonetheless. Pioth relayed to Iachixth, low and fast and quiet. Even in mindspeech, where there was no risk of being overheard, the bronze nonetheless had an almost conspiratorial tone. We have not swayed in our support of your decision. But the wherholders have orders to capture or kill you if you will not go of your own accord. I can’t speak for Trine, but likely they won’t take refusal much better.

Pioth’s eyes were yellow-orange, his claws clenched tightly into the soft ground, though he maintained an outward appearance of tense composure. But his words softened, a tinge of fondness creeping into them. You have grown well, and you deserve your own place in the world wherever you see fit. S’dekai and I are not warriors. But if need be, not-so-little queen... We will fight on your behalf. You need only say the word.

S’dekai remained silent, eyes on the sky, watching more dragons come in. It was difficult to predict how the Trine riders would react if he made his move. Would they become temporary allies? Or enemies as soon as they realized that he had no intentions of sending Natai to Trine either?

---

C’ross glanced sideways at the squeeze on his shoulder, and gave S’kiro a fractional nod of acknowledgement. For the time being, it seemed that the two blueriders were in agreement: remain calm and civil in the face of the wherholders’ presence. Reinforce the idea that Trine was the reasonable side, the side willing to compromise and respect Natai’s autonomy.

Two more Wherholder dragons had arrived, both greens, and soon after the whitepair from Trine. C’ross shifted over a little to permit Mercy to stand by him if she wanted to. But Natai was speaking to him again, and his stomach sank from the first polite words. He could feel the refusal coming before she even spoke it. Like it or not, Natai was going to force a confrontation here and now.

“I’d like to call you a friend too, Natai. And I’m not here to involve you in a war or drag you off anywhere against your will – not that I could even if I wanted to,” he added, with a significant glance in the direction of tiny Nimith. The little blue was tolerating Iachixth’s affection in much the same manner that a well-trained canine tolerates unwanted hugging: with a sort of mixture of stiff patience and puzzlement. “But I don’t know if everyone here will be so willing to just up and leave.”

It seemed to Mercy that she had arrived in the heat of a very intense discussion...even if the looks of the faces around her seemed pleasant enough.

'They are all tense. Even the dragons.' Aerith reported, her own eyes whirling slightly with worry as her rider stepped farther away.

'I'll be fine.' Mercy assured the white before smiling at C'ross as he made room for her just in time to hear Natai's words. She had promised herself that she wouldn't push..that she would let the women decide her own fate but a part of her wanted to speak up..to lay out the whole affair from start to finish..yes both sides had done things that were wrong but it was not the riders whom had started the whole bloody mess in the first place.

"You must of course, choose the path that you feel is best for yourself and Iachixth." Mercy stated with a smile that lessened a great deal with her next words. "There have been..as you say..atrocities committed by both sides, things that can not be taken back..but things that would never have happened in the first place if people had not been pushed into them. There is no choice but to defend when attacked..nor is there one but to try and attack first when you feel lives threatened. I did not agree with the actions against Malvren lately..but neither can I say they were not repaid with equal devastation nor completely undeserved. Many have suffered at Malvren...but I shudder to think how many will suffer in the next fall at Trine. So..Yes, both sides are behaving badly and I think, perhaps it should be less a choice of which sides actions you agree with and more a case of which sides morals you believe in.The morals are the underlying fracture in this debate, they are the reason the Handlers rose up to take over Malvren and Benden in the first place I believe. Actions can be altered if someone charismatic enough comes along to do it, Morals and beliefs on the other hand tend to be more ingrained. Harder to change. You can of course keep to yourself as you have been doing..but I fear that that too will prove a difficult path in the long run, it is hard to be a neutral island between two warring storms."

Mercy shrugged slightly, it was a sad state of affairs really. No matter what decision she made Natai was likely to irritate the other or both sides of this argument. It was equally hard to stay logical about it all...Mercy had been grievously wounded in the revolt, had almost lost Aerith..HAD lost her home and she did not agree in any way with the words spouted off by the Handlers and their ilk. There was no equality,no 'chance to prove yourself'..it was all an illusion backed by a power hungry man and his delusions of grandeur. She couldn't prove it..but she was willing to bet that Trine was treating its prisoners a heck of a lot better then the Handlers were treating theirs. But those were her thoughts on the matter..her own personal opinions and they were not for her to force upon another.

Letting her rider speak Aerith turned her attention to the happy young gold, putting her worry aside to chirp cheerfully at her. 'It is good to see you again dear Iachixth. Are you enjoying your company?' She asked, moving slightly closer but keeping a wary eye on the oh so much larger dragons nearby. She was fast thanks to her size but she was not silly enough to think that could necessarily save her if something went wrong. From Mercy's memories she knew it had not been enough before.

...Hummmm.

A'nos studied Natai in silence for some moments, noticing but not reacting to the arrival of more Trine riders. He was very glad that Canoake and Ralla were here now though.

"Your independent spirit is admirable," the Harper said after some moments, "and I can understand it. Violence has never been my calling, and I would prefer that it wasn't necessary... but I think that the white rider speaks wisely." A'nos turned a cool dark gaze onto Mercy at that point, calm and steady and hard like two pieces of jet. Turning back to Natai he made a small gesture to the green dragons with one long fingered hand. "Do you know much of how dragonrider society is ordered? The position of greens... and indeed blues." This was said with a slight incline of his head to the weyrling and adult of that hue.

--------------

Just as A'nos finished speaking a bellow rang out like a thunderclap; a sleek spotted blue had just appeared and laid eyes on the enemy. Up on his back C'tis snarled, oh he should have known those b*****d wherholders would be here!

Malcarreth's eyes flashed red and he dropped into a near vertical dive, pulling up at the last moment to land beside Neptanth. C'tis was off his back in a moment, sliding to the ground and striding over to Mercy with one hand on the whip attached to his belt. "The shaff is going on?" he asked the assistant weyrlingmaster with his usual display of patience. "Those bastards took our people and shards known what they're doing to them!" Rochelle. They had Rochelle. If he had gone along on that mission maybe he could have saved her. He knew she was alive through Kibeth but he also knew she was far from safe and well.

Shards, if there was one person at a diplomatic meeting not needed..it was C'tis. Mercy inwardly winced but kept her mind on the conversation at hand until she came storming up.

"Blues and greens are much valued members of the fighting ranks, without them Pern would be lost " Mercy stated smoothly "Do not attempt to say you Handlers have made things equal. There is no equality in your ranks..save that those most vicious and willing to fight rise higher. The mere impressing of a dragon in your ranks is all but seen as a shame, you seek merely to suppress the natural abilities, to beat golds into submission so that they can breed you more flying dray beasts and you use this fake allure of 'poor pitiful blues and greens so downtrodden and abused' to lure people to your cause. No blue is downtrodden, no green is abused. Perhaps you should share your method of handling unwanted wher eggs...I expect much the same would be done to any atypical dragon egg laid within your regime." She stated with a small amount of heat in her voice and fire in her eyes which she struggled to squelch before giving Natai an apologetic smile. "Forgive me...the outburst was uncalled for and stems from my own personal demons on the matter." They had almost killed Aerith just because of who she was the brutes! Anytime she heard them mutter that old and overused equality line she started to inwardly fume.

Turning to C'tis before he started punching people or something Mercy "They are here for the same reason we are I think..to try and beseech Natai to their side..." She didn't know what to say about the prisoner subject, they had some handlers in captivity as well. "I would hope they are treating their prisoners as well as we are treating our..who are being kept comfortable and healthy." She added, with a questioning look towards the opposing side as thought seeking confirmation on the condition of the prisoners.

"Right, because Benden's way is far superior," C'ross shot back tersely, chiming in with Mercy's words, "with all the dragons made equal at the bottom of the totem pole under the claws of the whers. Or do you deny that you are ruled by Keller and his gold, just as surely as we are ruled by our Weyrwomen? Your claims of equality are a cruel joke, nothing more."

Nimith pressed at his mind in warning, urgently. He’s trying to bait you. Remember that, C’ross. Remember we weren’t going to get drawn into a fight?

This isn’t a fight. It’s speaking the truth. C’ross’ voice was even, if clipped; his volume did not rise above its normal level despite the anger behind his words. If anything, this particular debate struck painfully close to home for him. It hadn’t been so long ago that he’d lived at Benden – not so long ago that he and his brother and the wherhandlers had sat around idly grumbling about the unwarranted merits of metallic dragons with the words something should be done about that on everyone’s lips.

And then C’ross had discovered that his Benden friends were willing to murder for their cause. Little wonder that the blueweyrling was desperate to distance himself from their beliefs as hard and as fast as he could.

“I know what they’re like, Natai,” he said in a more controlled voice to her. Only the intensity blazing in his eyes betrayed him. “I know what they’re like because I used to live there. And now I’m at Trine, and... it’s not so bad as whatever you’re thinking it is. You might even turn out to like it at Trine. Maybe you’ll want to stay. I did.”

Her words...the stung him because she didn't want to be with either. While he was happy she didn't want to be with the wherhandlers, she also didn't want to be with them at Trine. He dropped his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Natai, while we respect your wishes, you should know that this will keep happening. Each side will try to get you to join."

He turned as more joined them, sighing a bit at the other blueriders words and actions. Maybe with Mercy here things would go a bit smoother. "You must remember that they stole the eggs. There was loss of life on both sides, caused by both sides." While he wasn't sure if what he said made much sense, he tried. Talking to people, especially with the tension in the air, not his strong point. And it was getting a bit crowded for him.

Neptanth moved over a bit as Malcarreth landed next to him. Showing off? Good to see you here.
PostPosted: Fri May 31, 2013 7:02 pm

The rogue gold was very...cheerful. Cheerful and chatty and oblivious. A silly creature, indeed. Firith was not impressed, and did not respond beyond a vague feeling of acknowledgement. Do we really need this daft excuse for a dragon? she sent privately to Tatath, her fellow green. I tire of her chatter already.

Ralla had not come to talk, but hearing her former teacher speak was enough to make her twitch. "You have no idea what you're talking about," she snapped at Mercy, unable to hold her tongue. "You ride a precious white dragon, too special to be mere Thread fodder like all the expendable little greens and blues you raise. What does it matter if a green dies, when there are countless more to replace her?" Firith punctuated her rider's words with an angry hiss. "You don't know what it's like to be 'just another' anything, but we do, and we never will be again."

Canoake let everyone say their words. Really, how silly good everyone be over this? She came up and gave a respectful nod to everyone and looked Natai straight in the eye. "I's rough, isn't it? Everyone wanting you because of the color of your dragon"s hide? So here you are, surrounded by friends, enemies, and unknowns and all you can probably think about is how ridiculous this all is.." She shrugged and made herself comfortable. "I can"t say I. Blame you. I mean, I actually want and crave the attention your getting. While my Tatath is brilliant and a graceful flyer, we both had to admit that we were going to be stuck at the bottom as another nameless greenrider. But know, we are treated much better than before and actually have a measure of respect from other dragons and folks."

Tatath moved closer to the larger gold but not so close that she was bumping wings with any other dragon there. She too knew how to speak smoothly and project sympathy.

Staring at C'ross, she gave him a sweet smile. "I like the new Benden compared to the one that I was born and grew up in. Violence was definitely not the best answer but change certainly was the right one. And both myself and my fellow greenrider are enjoying all this change. It is just a shame that both sides, mostly run by men, are playing so dirty."

Tatath replied very privately to the other green.

This was such shameful business that Banshidheth really didn't want to be involved. Take the HoldQueen or kill her? That seemed quite excessive! Iachixth was a pleasant young dragon - naive, yes, but pleasant. Sweet, even. Banshi had no particular use for any of those traits, herself, but why couldn't they leave the little gold to herself? There was no true threat, save the shadowy possibility that she might join the traditionalists at Trine and add yet another gold to their band of broodmares. The horror!

Anali had had to argue with her for some time before the pale Queen had relented and agreed to come. They still had much work to do in gaining the trust of their allies, and aiding now would further that purpose, distasteful though this task might be. Not to mention that the delay had made them late, and Banshidheth did not like that, either. Tardiness was unacceptable!

If you'd listened to me sooner, we wouldn't be so late.

Then you shouldn't have waited so long to convince me, she answered as they appeared from between. Blast, but there were quite a few dragons here already! Hmph. They really ought to have left sooner than they had, but there was nothing to be done for it now.

Greetings once again, HoldQueen, Banshidheth sent to Iachixth. Is there room yet for us to land?

Iachixth shut up the instant Pioth spoke to her, large eyes flashing as gold as her hide before she tried to think happy thoughts. We haven't done anything wrong, she protested privately, her claws starting to knead at the ground. They aren't allowed to hurt Natai. I won't let them. Red curled at the edges of her eyes, bleeding to the yellow in a vibrant orange. She had only once in the past felt anger and Iachixth did not much want to feel it again; N'mol scared Natai enough that little tubesock leaped to her defense, bristling and angry. She'd been too small then to do anything.

Iachixth was not so small now. Natai kept her hand on her dragon, quiet, lips curled into a kind smile without wavering.

"I apologize if I called the acts of war atrocities," Natai shook her head, studying Mercy. "I never intended to use such strong language. Regretful things have happened, that is my belief, but unfortunately I do not agree with either side or morals. They have their positive aspects as well as their negative - and yes, sir, I know of the social hierarchy in the Weyrs. Luckily I am able to read and books on such things exist. As for..."

Suddenly C'tis. Both rider and dragon flinched from the loud bellow of the blue, gazes rising in unison to look at the spotted male. Natai shook herself out of it with a furrow of her eyebrows and a quick glance to the whip at his side. "... We are having a discussion. Or at least attempting, I believe." Poor S'kiro looked so hurt but even then she couldn't help another smile from tugging the corner of her lips. "Yes, I am well aware they stole the eggs. I am reminded of it each day of my life, aren't I, darling?"

Iachixth nodded in a very human manner, crooning and nuzzling as well as she could towards her rider. The compliment made some green leach into her eyes, her mind taking her to more peaceful things such as Aerith. I was having a lot of fun with the company! I'm - I'm not sure we are now, though. Everyone is getting very angry. And then one of her three favorite golds decided to appear. Iachixth trilled a greeting to Anali and Banshidheth, perking up a bit. Of course! I think we are doing some of those adult things Golds have to do. There's a discussion but I think it just means a fight.

A discussion always means a fight, Natai frowned then, just slightly, Canoake's sweet words sinking in then. Iachixth turned her attention to Tatath, all three eyelids blinking at the green. I'm not bored. Sometimes I'm lonely but not bored. And - and that's not true. All dragons are important. You shouldn't say things like that.

Oh, and the mud started to sling. Natai drew a deep, steadying breath and shook her head slowly, again. Canoake would not get to her. She smiled back. "It isn't rough at all. It's also not ridiculous in the least and I'm sorry to hear you think it may be for me. Being a dragonrider is not something I dreamed of, nor did I ask for it. If you would like attention please, by all means, have it. But just because this is not the life I envisioned for myself doesn't mean anything about it is ridiculous.."

You know, it's always weird when you talk so stiff-like to people. Iahixth grumbled then.

"I have spoken to people from both factions," Natai glanced between all of them, licking her lips. "Trine offers one choice, Benden and Malvren a second. I don't like either of them," I don't like where this is going, Natai. whispered Iachixth privately. Natai stroked but continued on with her words. "I'm taking the third choice and that will be that. Iachixth and I will be taking our path as we see fit. If equality if important then I see no reason to be chasing after a Gold and her rider rather than let them make their own way."

This was definitely not one of her best ideas. And Faranth only knew there were going to be several people not happy with her. But shells, she'd had a horrible feeling in her gut all day. Narisa knew that some of their Trine rider's had gone to see Natai. And more importantly, Mercy would be there. She trusted the Whiterider. But... what if something went wrong? If someone's mouth got them in trouble and a fight erupted? She didn't want to leave her rider's alone out there! Not that she didn't have faith in them. But with recent events... Narisa was not losing any more of Trine's people.

And shaffit, she was not going to let any harm come to her friend.

It was these thoughts, and the grumping of her dragon, that finally convinced Narisa to go make sure everything went without a hitch at Natai's Hold. She'd deal with the anger of her own people later.

Like she was growing accustomed to doing, Cepheith appeared out of between high in the sky, giving both dragon and rider a chance to view what was happening below. Sweet Faranth, it was a good sign that no dragons were fighting! However the sight of a different Gold made Narisa's stomach churn.

Do not fear, mine. I won't allow any harm to come to you or the young one. She does not deserve this. Cepheith rumbled before dipping her wing to make a lazy spiral downwards. Greetings, Iachixth! Are you and yours alright? Mine was worried, so we come to make sure no one acts like an idiot.

Narisa quickly made note of the dragons she knew, her gaze flashing towards the pale Gold. She was not familiar with that one, though word had reached her about a Gold that sided with the Handlers. Ceph, will you... ?

Of course. She replied smoothly, extending her thoughts to Banshidheth. Hello, my fellow golden sister. I am Cepheith of Trine and mine is Narisa. Finding a place that she felt was good enough, Cepheith landed some ways away from the crowd. It was not hers or Narisa's intention to intrude and push for Natai to choose. They were here to make sure the younger pair didn't get hurt.

Aerith. Neptanth. Malcarreth. Nimith. You are well? Of course, Ceph had to check out the Bronzes in the vicinity. And the Greens. But she remained apart from everyone, and in a clearing large enough that she could take off quickly should the need arise.

So I see, Banshidheth remarked to Iachixth. I am surprised it seems to have remained a discussion for this long, with as many...visitors as you have. And then, as she landed, furling massive wings and drawing nearer to the gathering on foot, another gold arrived. How lovely. Regardless, her eyes held a calm and steady blue as she surveyed the gathered dragons. There was no need for a fuss...yet.

While her rider dismounted in time to catch the tail end of the 'discussion,' she acknowledged Cepheith. I am Banshidheth. Mine is Anali.

"Equality notwithstanding, the ability of a gold to clutch makes her valuable," Anali said frankly. "If you take your third choice, I do not think you will be left to go your way in peace by either side. Assuming you have somewhere to go at all." Another Weyr might be willing to take the goldpair - although under the circumstances, perhaps it would be considered too great a risk - but she doubted that that was what Natai had in mind.
