Tuck drew himself up into a seated position, indian-style, before giving his sister a concerned look.
"I do too, Gnat. Every damn day. We can't never go back, and 'sides, we're lucky we got one another here."
He was silent for a long time.
"Sometimes I wish you wasn't here. I wish you was back home with ma an' pops."

Gnat looked up, glaring and on the defensive.
"I can handle myself," she insisted.
Secretly though...
She slumped back down.
"It weren't home, without you," she intoned quietly, after a few moments of silence.

Tuck knew how she felt. She was the missing piece in the puzzle of his life, his twin sister - and when he'd signed on to come to this place, he'd forced himself to give her up. He'd resigned himself to feeling forever incomplete.
But here she was.
"I know you can handle yourself," Tuck grunted softly, "but you ain't gotta. I'm here, we're together again. I got your back just like I know you got mine."
He paused.
"Even if you go out on dates to the jungle with some old guy."

She couldn't help it, she laughed, even if it was a little teary around the edges.
"a**."
She took in a deep, steadying breath, and wiped her eyes. "An' I got yours, yeah yeah. Even if you is gettin' the backs of every little lady on this island."

Tuck chuckled softly.
"Hey, you can't fault me for it. I didn't get to chase tail back in college. I had to focus on my grades. An' then after that, you know, there just weren't no time to ******** around."
He was silent before scooting across the floor to sit before her.
"I am glad you're here, Gnat. I miss ma and pops, but.. it's selfish. I don't know. I'm glad you're here, even if you are the biggest pain in the a** I ever met."

"No canoodlin' with th' Army boys while you were away?" She grinned. "Gingersnaps'll be so disappointed."
She tucked her feet up on the chair, resting her chin on her knees. "'M glad you're here too. An' not dead in some desert." She paused, shaking her head.
"Thanks for always lookin' out for me. Even if I don't always appreciate it."

Tuck rolled his eyes.
"Hell no."
He fell quiet for a long time, studying Gnat's face. His expression was strained, serious, but Tuck didn't say anything for a while.
He decided not to touch on the topic of the desert. Now wasn't the best time. He didn't know if he could handle it just yet.
"You're my baby sister. I love you, even if you're a pain. We're luck to have one another, especially here."
Tuck shrugged his broad shoulders.
"And I want nothin' but the best for you, too. S'why I act like an a*****e most times."

"Uh huh." She smiled.
"I love you too, even if you can't keep your nose outta my business."

"s**t." Tuck shook his head. "Someone's gotta look out for you. It's gonna be me, of course, cuz I'm your older brother."
He shrugged.
"An' gettin' my nose all up in your business is kinna my job."

"Yeah, well. I don't have much business t' get into, anyway," she retorted.
"You're like, mister social butterfly over there. I feel like I'm jus' taggin' along on your coattails."

Tuck snorted.
"Been too social lately," he grunted. It was the truth.
For a long moment he watched his sister.
"I never.. if I hurt you, I never meant to. Never meant to hurt ma n' pops, neither. At first it was just.. easier to disappear. After I signed on here, it was mandatory."
Tuck cleared his throat.
"I never wanted you to think I abandoned you, Natasha. That wasn't how s**t happened."

Gnat frowned, remembering, but quickly turned in into a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"It's alright. I knew you wasn't dead, just...lost somewhere," she replied dismissively, waving her hands and trying to brush it off. "You're too damn persistent t'be dead."

"Lost." He let out a dry laugh that was barren of humor before shaking his head.
He had some explaining to do.
Tuck rubbed his palms along his hair as he glanced up at his sister.
"Started seein' s**t. Hearin' s**t. I didn't know what to do. Grades started to slip. You know how pops was about school, about grades. How could I explain to him that my s**t was slippin' because I was seein' monsters?"
Tuck let out another low laugh, devoid of mirth.
"S'why I joined the Army. Why I never came home on leave. Why I always let everyone think I was dead. Easier that way. We was attacked one night by somethin' that looked an' smelled an' sounded like death. It killed all of 'em. I was the only one who got away. The only one who survived, an' I was happy to just let everyone think I was dead, too."
He fell silent, slightly rocking where he sat as he studied the wall above Gnat's head.
