"Worms," Evan wheezed out on a laugh, finally just putting his head down on the table, his broad shoulders shaking with the force of his humor.
Which was a lot. Humiliating stories about his best friend on the island nearly straight from the source were definitely worth laughing over.

"Was gross. Mom had to bring the doctor a bag of his poo."
"Prolly a medical file out there somewhere, molderin' away, on my brother's dookey. Imagine that."
Sip.

Evan coughed and shook his head where it still rested on the table, taking a moment to compose himself. He lifted it once he had recovered enough to speak, replying in a voice made hoarse with laughter, "I'd really, really rather not."

"Fair 'nuff." She drained the rest of her coffee. "What about you, big guy? You got any siblings?"

Evan nodded, his smile turning a little wistful at the edges. "A younger sister, Laurie. She'll be...16 this year?" He felt a little guilty for not knowing right off the bat, but time seemed to pass strangely for him on the island.

"Oh." Her own expression faltered. Of course. What an awkward thing to bring up.
"Sorry."

"Nah, it's okay," Evan replied, immediately feeling sorry that he'd dragged the light mood down. "I knew what I was giving up when I signed on the dotted line." Any regrets he had were of his own making, but that didn't mean he had to like them. "Must be nice, though, despite everything, yeah? Having your brother here with you?"

Gnat wrinkled her nose.
"I guess."
"Would consider tradin' him in for the dog, though." She sighed wistfully. "She was a nice dog."

Evan chuckled. "Nice as I bet your dog was, she probably couldn't Moon for us in the field. Probably couldn't wash dishes, either." He paused, considering. "Then again, your dog probably wouldn't make me cook for her, either, so maybe you've got a point."

"He mooned you?"
She looked appropriately horrified.

"What? No, he's a Moon, he stands around and makes sure Suns don't get hit too much. Didn't they--they taught you about the divisions, right?" Evan dearly hoped she said yes, simply because his own knowledge about Deus and how it worked was still pretty limited.

Gnat grinned. "Maybe, but you can give me a refresher, sweet cheeks."
"Athough," she added thoughtfully, "it do seem like he gets hit on an awful lot. It's suddenly makin' so much more sense."

Evan returned Gnat's grin, remembered that she was Tuck's sister, and then dialed it back into the realm of 'friendly.' "Well," he said, "as I understand it, Suns are the ones that go in and kill stuff, Moons are the ones who make sure the Suns don't get killed, Life researches the stuff that need to be killed, and Death makes sure it's okay to go in there and kill stuff in the first place. Mists kind of do it all. As for your brother, well," he shrugged, "there's no accounting for taste."
