Morsmordre tugged him along, the pain in her body spiking. Her limbs were shaking, and she could feel a sheen of sweat breaking out even as she was shivering. She could see the cave, the gaping black opening that promised safety. She would have to stay awake for the next day or so while she healed, and then put as much distance between her and the stallion.
How she wished she had wings, like most of her kind.
Her breaths were shallow, and she could feel herself panting more and more. She could feel it happening, the darkness pulling her further and further under. Her knees were buckling under her, and then she felt them hit the hard earth. The hair slipped from between her teeth, and almost in slow motion, her body slipped to the ground.
Hell
Her eyes rolled back into her head.

Cosmic had been in a fugue state as he followed meekly after the mare. Her grip on his mane had relaxed a little almost as if she realized that he was following without putting up any resistance. He gave himself a mental wakeup call as he noticed the area around him for the first time. It seemed as though the mare was leading him into a cave.
Was this the mare's home? Or would it just be used as a way over stop. A place where he could possibly rest.
While he was musing about what this place was Cosmic's attention suddenly turned back towards the mare. Her steps had become labored almost as if she were having troubles. His gaze locked on her form as she suddenly relaxed the grip on his hair entirely. He watched in silence as the mare crumpled to the ground. He noted the sheen of sweat on the mare's body and sighed. Maybe it was time to get out of dodge? Cosmic Eternity glanced down at the mare again before scanning the area around him. He prodded at the mare's side with his hoof and waited for any response. Obviously it wasn't an act. Another healing wouldn't work this soon and he couldn't just leave ... could he?
In a reverse of positions Cosmic leaned down and gripped the mare's mane in his mouth. His heavier weight made it easier on him to drag the mare than it had been on her to drag him. He tugged gently on the mane in his mouth and began to drag the mare to the cave. He could stand guard until she regained consciousness and then leave.

Her mouth felt like cotton, dry and raw. She could barely swallow. Phantasms danced beneath her eyelids like little firelight shadows on the wall. Faces and voices floated in front of her, and she knew that she was delirious---they were all dead.
She pulled her eyes open slowly, the room spinning and everything remained fuzzy. She remembered something about a cave, but that was all. All she could think of was water. Her parched throat cried for it, and she croaked out the words, "Water."
But nobody was there, that she remembered. She struggled trying to get her feet back up under her before collapsing to the ground and putting her feverish head agaisnt the cool rock of the floor.

The unicorn stallion stirred at the sound of a rasping voice. Cosmic cast his gaze to the mare that lay on her side. It a strange turn of events he'd stayed near the side of the feverish mare. There had not been anymore applications of healing as he was unsure if it would truly help. It would be better if the mare could break the fever on her own. Instead he had stood guard at the mouth of the cave.
Returning back to his watch Cosmic sighed. Why had he stayed near? The mare had made it clear that all she valued from him was his ability to heal her wound. With an audible sigh of confusion the unicorn collected some rain soaked moss and moved it nearer to the mare. He placed the bundle at the mare's muzzle and hoped that she'd feel the moisture and drink.

Morsmordre felt something wet and ticklish near her face. She tried to force her eyes open, but they burned and seared. Her whole body ached, and she blinked several times to get her eyes to see what was in front of her.
The moist moss pressed against her face, and finally seeing what it was, she sucked on it. The wetness cooled her aching throat, but her head remained fuzzy. It didn't seem like anywhere near enough to have. She wanted more, more and only more. Sucking on it until the last dreg of moisture was gone, she closed her eyes and rested her heavy head against the floor.
Her throat still ached, and she still felt so...dry. "Who's there?" She called out hoarsely.

Now this was a tricky situation. How could he answer the mare without speaking. The stallion sighed before gently pausing to consider the ramifications of speaking again. He'd gone for so long without saying a spoken word that perhaps he'd forgotten just how to makes the sounds. His horn flashed in the dim light of the cave and he took a deep breath before exhaling. He couldn't do it just yet.
More moss was gathered before it too was dropped at the muzzle of the mare. Hopefully she wouldn't continue to ask about his presence if he kept playing nursemaid. All she needed to know was that someone was looking out for her. A gentle touch of his horn to her side would alleviate some more of the pain she was feeling. It would feel like a cooling balm had been applied to the spots were she had the most need. The sensation wouldn't last but it would bring her some level of comfort.

Morsmordre felt the warm then cool sensation touching her side. She could feel it spreading out like a blanket to warm and comfort her. She felt her mind growing clearer and also being swept under by sleep. She fought it against it though as she sucked on the cool moss, wetting her dry dry throat.
Her eyes cleared, and she could see the unicorn. Her heart thudded loudly for a moment and she could not hide the shock in her voice, "You stayed."

At the second phrase that Cosmic had heard the mare mutter since arriving in the cave the stallion's eyes locked with Morsmordre's own and he gave a tiny nod. There was something almost like a teasing smile on his expression before another sigh worked through his body. He would have to break his silence eventually it seemed. It would be interesting to learn what this mare would think of him.
He'd already helped her more than what she would need to continue healing on her own. If she rested and waited until things were fully healed than he'd have nothing more to do with her. Working around a suitable reply began to get tricky and a rather abrupt pause occurred before two words broke the silence.
"I did."
The words were the first that Cosmic Eternity had spoken in a while. They were almost as rough as the mare's.

She listened to the words as they were almost jolted out of his mouth. She studied him wondering what had caused him to stay? Concern? Kindness? She'd long learned what those did to you. But there was a certain honour to this that she could understand. Others that she had no honour, that it was only herself that guided her. But there was more to it, she was a soquili of her word even if it was mostly unvalued.
"I will keep my word," her voice was a little less rough. "I won't try to take you," she told him. He might think that she needed to thank him, but she didn't. She would keep her word and that was enough.
She wanted to get to her feet, to move--but she felt dizzy. "How long has it been?"

To tell the truth Cosmic Eternity wasn't really concerned if the strange mare kept her word or not. He was mentally going over the shortest responses he could give that would bring satisfaction to the mare's inquiry about how long it had been. The unicorn stallion grunted as he dropped yet some more moss at the mare's side before glancing towards the entrance of the cave. It was still raining so he'd be able to continue to break the mare's thirst. He cast his gaze around before it settled on the mare. It was a risk that he was taking, talking more than necessary.
"It’s been awhile; but a little less than a day."
Cosmic grunted almost painfully as he spat out his next question. "What caused this wound?"

Morsmordre sucked on the moss until the moisture was gone. Her throat was still parched, but it wasn't aching as much. She closed her eyes for a long minute, trying to disentangle all that happened from the fever dreams.
"I was making a deal," her voice was rough and hoarse. "It was with a stallion that I'd long heard of. He paid a lot for my services, and when I delivered to him what he asked--he set his mongrel children on me. He told them to tear me limb from limb. He said, 'Bleed her'. And then he watched as they did it with their taloned claws. Then they took my payment, and they left me for dead."
She clenched her teeth in anger, taking great panting breaths. "I will find them, I will make them pay..."

To hear the story of the mare's wound Cosmic felt a deep pulse of anger flood through him. He was a gentle type but the story being told caused his ire to rise. No creature should go through what apparently the mare had experienced. The wound on her side was beginning to lose the shiny sheen of inflamed tissue and Cosmic was partially relieved to know that although weakened from being only a half-unicorn that he still wielded the power to heal.
The stallion glanced down towards his "patient" before pacing back and forth. If this mare truly sought revenge would she not be killed in the process? If she'd been bested once before why would she want to go back for round two?
"No, for now you will rest."

She smiled at him grimly through the burn of her eyes, as she laid her head down resting. "I can bide my time. I will hold his name, his family's name close me...and when my Master comes again, when he comes back for me. He will find that I have been faithful. And he will avenge what they have done to his chosen one." She laughed coarsely, her throat burning with pain and dryness.
"It's not today, I can wait stallion...I can wait...." She drifted off into an uneasy sleep.

Cosmic heard the words that the mare spoke as what seemed like a promise to herself before shaking his head. As her eyes drifted close once more he shook out his braided mane and contemplated his own thoughts in silence. It had not been too hard to offer short and succinct replies to a total stranger but what had happened to keeping his silence forever more? His own wounds were so deeply hidden inside that he could not speak of them without risking tearing them wide open again. The risk of speaking of the horror that he had witnessed befall his family was too great to comprehend or put into words. Why would he want to speak of such tragedy?
If there came such a day that he could speak freely of his past well then perhaps he would do so willingly. Today was not that day though. The horn that he possessed had failed him in the time of his greatest need and at times he felt like it did no good to keep it. Although with his brief attempts to heal this troubled mare, something inside had changed his way of thinking. Perhaps his horn was useful in some ways. Even if he couldn't heal his own damaged psyche he could still help others.
Going out into the drizzle that still fell from the sky Cosmic began to graze. In order to keep up his strength he could not forget about his own needs. His raised his head from time to time to check the horizon before going back to ripping out the shoots of grass at his feet. So far it seemed as if the storm was doing a good job of keeping others away. He would not be able to rely on that for too long he knew.
The stallion gave a soft sigh and turned his gaze back to the cave entrance. The rain seemed to be easing now and Cosmic felt that if he were wise he would leave now. Something kept him from doing so. Though he had been semi-forced to come here and help this mare it was honor that kept him from leaving her side. He would stay until he knew for certain that she would be able to stand under her own power. Cosmic felt the rightness in his decision. With the understanding that the mare would release him afterwards he made a conscious effort not to flee from the area of the small cave. He knew nothing of this mare's master but perhaps it was a good thing. It already seemed as if he had done her some service but she'd need to stay off her feet for at least a few more days.

Beneath her eyelids, dreams flickered. They ripped and tore apart, the dreams fell like pierced doves. Blood spattered the walls, the canvas of her mind and everything spun.
Morsmordre pushed open her heavy eyes, fought against the strong weight that held them down. Her vision seemed clearer and her surroundings more sharp. Her throat still ached in that parched dry way, but the fevered feeling was gone.
It had been hours, or perhaps days since she had passed out. She could not tell.
She moved gingerly, trying to find her feet. It took her a few minutes, but at least she was able to move albeit stiffly. The bruises and torn skin pulled, kept her from moving too fast or too freely.
She stood there, savouring the feeling of being on her feet. It was not a dream, she wasn't going to die. That meant that there was much to be done, so much that it made her feel sick to think of it. Horus and his brood would have to be punished. Her Master would want it, and so did she.
It was then that she remembered the half unicorn. Why had he stayed when she had done all but chain him here? What benevolence had he given her despite her lack of...anything?
His silhouette framed the mouth of the cave. For a moment, she hesistated, her throat burning with the words stuck there. She should thank him, but all her strength seemed spent. She could do this though.
She called out to him--said the words for the first time ever to another living breathing being, "Thank you."
