It's hard to say because the US is huge and just has so many different places where it's pretty normal and other places where it's the most disgusting thing.
I'd say I feel pretty safe being myself because I live in a portion of California where it's not too bad. There are flamboyant gay guys that go to my school and others who hold hands publicly so I don't think the level of "fear" is too high.
It's very unfortunate that people have to live in fear just for being themselves though.
