It hurt. It hurt more than she'd thought it might, and she wasn't prepared for that sick bitter taste of jealousy to rise in her throat. She had no right to feel that way. He was no longer hers to feel jealous over - he belonged to someone else now, someone who appeared to make him happy - and to Lark, that was the most important aspect of everything.
She had to keep reminding herself that.
"Y'can't choose who y'fall in love with," she mumbled against his chest, her own heart twinging with the thought. She certainly hadn't been able to choose. "Y'always been good at bein' there fer everyone, Ket."
Her spindly arms tightened around him.
"So long as she's good t'ya, which I know she gotta be."
She had a million and one questions, but none of them were really hers to ask, and so she remained silent.

Kettil knew it had to hurt her. He simply knew. It was probably why he didn't pull away but he wasn't going to apologize for it either not in the sense of being sorry that he was dating Freya now in the first place.
The relationship with Freya and with Lark both helped him grow in a sense. He wasn't about to apologize for either of them.
"Mmm. I guess so. I'm here for you, too." He reminded her for perhaps the millionth time in their friendship but it seemed important that she knew this now. Quietly he smiled a bit, "Y'know what's gonna be silly is I'mma be jealous of anyone that you trap with them emerald green eyes of yours. Guess that's the fun of bein' a friend with your ex, huh...? Though maybe whoever you end up with is your actual soulmate. Eh?"
Kettil had no qualms against admitting to his possible jealousy.

She knew that he knew. They'd known each other since they were both little buggers knee high to a foxfire.
Lark chuckled softly, leaning back in his arms long enough to jab him with a bony elbow.
"I ain't in no rush, now," Lark grinned, nose wrinkling impishly. She was silent for a moment as she glanced up at him, the grin melting into something more pensive.
"I think we're gonna be alright, Ket. Y'know? Friends is.. it's somethin' more familiar t'us."

Kettil laughed at her words and nodded a bit, "Yeah, I figure you ain't." He reached up a hand and tousled her bangs affectionately. He adored her still just differently than before. It wasn't that he was more guarded, it was just simply that he knew that the scene of romance was not right for them.
No matter how they might have felt for each other.
"Yeah, we'll be fine, Lar. I ain't gonna let you get away that easily. I'd hunt you down before it came to that," he teased.

Lark merely chuckled before pulling away, tilting her head as she glanced up at him.
"What made y'lose the dreads? Was always fond'a them things," she grinned, tilting her hat back off her head so that the straps held it against her back.
It was odd, but this easy camaraderie was so natural for them. It always had been, until things changed. Hindsight was always 20/20, and maybe.. if anything.. their experience with one another had brought them even closer, as friends.

Kettil let her go as he just simply flopped back to sit on his rear and crossed his arms over his chest, "Mmmn! Freya wanted to see how it would look an' so did I. It ain't like I can't dread them again if I get the wild hair up my a** to do so. I like my hair either way, really. I think it was time for a change, been keepin' my hair all dreaded for so long I forgot that I was born with normal hair."
He felt calmer now. Comfortable.
It was as if they'd never dated in the first place other than them blatantly admitting feelings for each other just moments prior. In a sense it was a freeing thing to know where they stood with each other and why things were as they are now. Even if it hurt they would rise above it and be stronger.
"Ever think about doin' somethin' different to your looks? Like colorin' yer hair or maybe even just lettin' it grow?" Kettil asked curiously.

"Hair's just hair,"Lark flopped down beside him, leaning back on the grass like the giant tomboy she was - limbs sprawled out, hat crushed beneath her, "'n I think y'look jest fine either way."
She was quiet for a brief moment.
"I met a ghoul, name's Steffani. She's undead, real handy with a needle n' thread. She dresses real nice, too, and t'be frank I was thinkin' 'bout askin' her t'help me dress better."
Lark shrugged, the grass beneath those slender shoulders rustling around beneath her.
"Mebbe let m'hair grow out, too. Ain't got no reason not to. Might be a nice change. Been cuttin' my hair short ever since I could hold some clippers, much to m'mum's upset."
She shot him a wry grin.

"Exactly. Hair is just hair. It grows back and it does whatever needs to be done," he affirmed quietly not really minding as she sprawled out next to him. A small blush crept over his cheeks, "Flatterer," he teased lightly.
The Muut glanced down at her and nodded slightly, "If you think that'll make y'happy, Lar. You'll always be my Larkspur no matter how you dress or do your hair." He meant these things differently than how he might have before. She'd always be his in the sense that they shared their childhood together. Just like a part of him would always belong to her. She knew everything he'd done in the past mostly because he'd drag her into trouble with him.
"I think you'd look real nice with longer hair." He said finally. "Real nice indeed!"
There was a small pause as he peered at her, "Y'know we never sparred or anything together. We should fix that sometime."

Lark bent one leg at the knee before raising the other to rest against it. The pumpkin sun felt good on her skin, and she chuckled softly.
"An' yer callin' me the flatterer," she tossed him a grin, one that came easily, completely free of strain and stress. Things were going to be okay. Time would heal all wounds, and while she'd never know now if things might've ended differently for them, it was what it was.
"Yer gonna whip m'a**," she turned her face skyward once more. "Don't think I ain't seen how big Endy's gotten."
She turned solemn.
"Y'think she hates me?"

He just shrugged at her and replied, "I'm a flirt and a flatterer. You knew that since forever, but I mean every word I say," his smile was quiet and serene. Kettil had changed in small ways, quiet ways. He wasn't as anxious to fill the air with speech every five minutes, and he wasn't fidgeting around as if turned crazed.
"Y'don't know that. I could be having an off day that day!" He laughed.
When she turned solemn and asked about Endzela he seemed thoughtful and shook his head, "Nah. I don't think she does. She just didn't want to make you anxious by scolding you for worrying me," he smiled lightly. "Endy knew this talk was long time comin', that I'd take care of us."

She waved her hand at him with a grin lifting up on an elbow to gently sock his shoulder.
Lark relaxed again, chest dipping with a hearty exhale.
"Good. If I was her, I'd prob'ly hate me."
Sometimes she did hate herself, but now wasn't the time to discuss it. Lark cleared her throat and jumped ship as far as that topic went, choosing instead to bring up another.
"How's yer family doin'? Yer ma n' pa?"

He acted wounded when she hit his shoulder and just flopped over and acted as if pained. When she spoke he froze a moment.
What was it with ghouls hating themselves? Kettil felt he understood on a level but on the other hand he never hated on himself for very long. Doubted himself plenty of times but never hated himself. He shook his head a bit, "Don't hate y'self. Y'got scared, y'panicked. You learned from it."
That was all he was honestly going to say on that subject.
"Mmm! They're good. I went up to see them one weekend, everythin' is pretty much status quo." Kettil nodded. "Onyx is an a*****e, Fox is a sweet but mischievous little squirt. So on and so forth. M'cousin Piper is comin' to school soon, supposedly. She called me all breathless and excited. I didn't tell Freya yet because I wanted to see if it was true, I don't want to get her all excited just yet."
Not that he felt his cousin was lying. He just wanted to make sure it wasn't something he misheard. Maybe he was having a hearing hallucination or something...
Kettil wasn't that bright sometimes.
"..Think that not tellin' Freya that my cousin is possibly comin' to Amity is a bad idea?" He furrowed his brow a bit.

Lark's own brow furrowed slightly when Kettil asked her opinion on the Freya-Piper thing, the minuscule divot smoothing out just a moment later.
"Nah, can't see why it would be," Lark said slowly, thoughtfully. "Yer luckly t'have sucha big family, an' I'm willin' ta bet that they all jest... love Freya. Assumin' she met 'em, a'course."
Lark shrugged.
"When d'ya graduate from school?"

Kettil shrugged a bit, "I just don't want her to feel like I'm keepin' secrets I guess."
He smiled a little and nodded, "They enjoyed her. I am sure they miss you, though. I mean you were practically one of us growin' up. It'd be kinda hard to forget you after all the trouble we got in together, hm? Plus they love ya."
At the question he shrugged a little, "I think I could do an exam soon and I just might. I am only in my second year so far..."

"Ket, there's good secrets n'then there's bad ones. Ain't nothin' wrong wit keepin' a secret - which ain't even really a secret - just to keep her from gettin' excited n' all worked up only t'be let down. I figure if it ain't set in stone jest yet that Piper is comin' t'school, mebbe just keep it on the," she lowered her voice, a sparkle in her eye, "down loooooow."
Lark reached out for a piece of long grass and immediately popped it in her mouth.
"I love 'em too. Hope they know it."
She paused.
"I am so jackdamned far behind in school. Maybe someday I'll catch up, but at this rate I ain't too hopeful."
