Tuck watched the other man carefully, eyes narrowed the entire time. He didn't realize how tense he was until Evan held out his hand - for a moment there, he hadn't been sure that he was going to make it off of the training field on his own two feet.
When Evan held out his hand, Tuck reached up to take it. Using the other man's body as leverage, Tuck pulled himself to his feet.
Herryk's runes flashed a soothing, cool blue, and though his own charge was ready...
"You okay, man?"
Herryk echoed the sentiment, though there was no way that Evan could hear such a thing.

There was a whining, sulking puppy monster lurking in the back of Evan's head that he probably needed to have a Serious Discussion with regarding how to play nice with others. There was also a charge that he should probably learn how to control lest it one day escape him unintentionally and do some real damage. He could also do with some real monster killing, just to make it up to Gir.
Other than that, Evan was peachy.
"Oh, yeah," Evan replied as he withdrew, his smile tight and completely insincere, "just giving you a fighting chance. You good to keep going?"

"I ain't much for fightin' if we're gonna be honest," Tuck rumbled quietly, eyes keen on the other man. "Herryk's charge ain't one that deals damage, neither."
Blue runes rippled across the head of the axe, the three stones that decorated the face of the blade tinkling slightly as Tuck reclaimed his grip on the weapon.
"But I'm good to keep going," the Moon replied as readjusted his frame. "You c'mon, then. This ain't about beatin' the s**t outta one another. This is about gettin' good at what we do."
The axe was held defensively in front of him, and Tuck smiled brightly at Evan.
"Come on, now."

"Beating the s**t out of things is what I do, kind of," Evan reminded the Moon, a little less tense now that it seemed like he hadn't scared Tuck off. No harm, no foul, no need to dwell. "But I get your point."
Evan took a moment to reexamine Tuck's stance now that he was on the defensive, looking for any weaknesses and seeing surprisingly few. Well, brute force and mostly dumb luck had worked before, so Evan tried rushing Tuck again and--pretty much just bounced off. Huh. Evan grinned at Tuck, nodding in understanding. "Guess that's why you're a Moon."

"Feels right to me. Got a little sister to protect. That mouth of hers has gotten her into trouble plenty of times. She's a sun, too. Natalie. My twin sister."
He was silent for a long time, a pained expression on his face. It hadn't always felt right. He used to be more like Evan, more like Rep, more like a Sun in general. It hadn't been until that day that he'd failed to protect...
<Stop.>
A muscle near his eye ticked. He forced his lips into a strained smile. The dog tags that rested against his chest gleamed in the peachy light of the rising sun.

Evan nodded in understanding. "Not much else more important to protect than family," he agreed. "Especially if they're on the front lines." He felt a little sorry for Tuck in that moment. Suns, as he understood it, had a much more limited life span than the other divisions; the added stress of knowing that your twin would fall was not an if, but a when was not a burden Evan envied the other man.
Evan would just have to do what he could to help push that inevitability back. "Pay attention," he said, using the curved end of Gir's blade to push through Tuck's defenses a little. "Fight's out here."
The dim light glinting off the metal of Tuck's dog tags caught Evan's attention, and he glanced at them speculatively. "Which branch?"

He flashed a grimace, a poor excuse for a smile, when Evan called him back from his thoughts.
"Army," Tuck replied, his voice taking on a harsh edge. He didn't elaborate. It dredged up too many memories best left alone, especially here and now, in the midst of a spar.
"You serve?"

"********' Army," Evan snorted derisively, grinning only a little mockingly to take some of the sting out of it.
But not all of it. Tuck was Army, after all, and there would always exist a good-natured rivalry between branches even if they were now part of a very different tree. "Marines," Evan replied by way of answer, an eyebrow raised as if daring Tuck to challenge it.
Gir whined hopefully in the back of his mind, eager for the charge but not demanding it like he had earlier. Although the potential to maim remained, it was no longer an overwhelming urge. They were learning.
Good boy.

The word clung to Tuck's lips, and he couldn't help himself.
"Jarhead, huh?" His tone was filled with nothing but laughter. Didn't matter who they were before - they were here now. He hadn't even tried to get into any other branch of the military. He'd needed to get away from everything, and he thought he'd found that escape in joining the Army.
He'd been wrong.
"You all charged?"
Tuck brought the head of his axe down before him, and for a moment the runes danced across the weapon, almost coalescing into a glittering blue shield.
It then sputtered, much like it had during the spar with Heidi.

"Damn right, soldier," Evan replied, clearly not seeing the humor that Tuck did. He had been proud as hell to be a Marine, even after they no longer wanted him, and still held himself to those high and rigid standards. There was no such thing as an "ex-Marine," after all, regardless of whether he was in the desert fighting enemy forces or on a tropical island fighting monsters.
Gir's insistent mental nudge dragged Evan away from the edge of anger. It was time to play now and he wanted to, more than anything, and he wasn't at all afraid to let Evan know. "Ah--yeah, all good here." Gir yapped away happily, and Evan couldn't help but grin. It quickly turned into a confused frown as a blue light flickered and died in front of Tuck.
/Can I can I can I can I can I can I--/
No, not yet. Something's wrong.
"What's up? Now's a hell of a time for performance anxiety."

"You're ******** telling me, man, ********," Tuck grunted, taking a moment to have a little conversation with ******** problem?
<....no.>
So?
<Herryk likes this one.>
Tuck snorted and shook his head, mouth tight.
"It ain't performance anxiety. I can perform just fine."
Rolling back his shoulders, Tuck held the axe aloft in both hands and waited for another attack.

"Whoa, hey, no need to get so defensive there, big guy, relax," Evan replied with a teasing grin. He raised his sword, and then flipped it so the flat of the blade rested casually against his shoulder, the glowing red teeth turned away from his neck. "I'm just sayin', if you need a second, I'll wait."

"You mind yourself, now," Tuck laughed, "she's a grown-a** woman and can handle her own, but I ain't above watchin' out for her."
The laughter stopped abruptly when Evan attacked, though there was a twinkle of humor in Tuck's hazel eyes.
