Sometimes Marcus wondered why exactly, he had agreed to things. Part of it was because he did genuinely want to help, that he did feel that he could do something to make the outcome more favorable, but the other part was the fact that repair work got boring rather fast as did a lot of other things. Something to break the monotony was nice.

Getting the usual Caelius lectures were just expected, as were the annoyances of having to deal with ridiculous equipment. He had his gear, and what was given was the usual. Same old same old. Bethany was just what broke the mold. The moon's look was returned with his own of 'thank you, I'll see if we can't come back without someone hurting themselves but keep a bed in the infirmary open as usual'.

A heavy sigh he looked to a few of the group members. Height might have been an issue. Just a bit. "I'll take the end with the actual machine. we can walk it down and I guess if we want to cushion it a bit, wrap a scarf around the portion of the frame we'll be carrying with- if it'll cause too much discomfort." He did look at Jake, a tiny smile quirking his lip.

"As nice as it is to see you gun-ho, wait till your team is ready and then walk it down. A direct lift will put too much strain on your muscles and wear you out before we get anywhere."

Sherry might have made a point of sticking close to Stormy, maybe. Probably. Most certainly. The trainee seemed a bit nervous, and Sherry understood that feeling. The Lifer knew they should be ready for anything, but she still hoped the mission would be as easy as Caelius had made it sound. A nice relaxing mission would be a good thing after recent events.

She was also making a point of not thinking about how seriously uncomfortable she was about going on this mission with Jake. She had been the one to say it, after all. Missions came first or something along those lines. Damn her heart. It was time to ignore it, and trust in what Chester had said. So she did. (Her weapon would have argued that she was doing a terrible job of this.)

She double checked her pockets at the lighthouse, always a good idea to make sure she had her bandages. The flask was a given. Usual equipment, usual last minute checks...and then the special fear scanner was pointed out. Bethany, huh? Sherry....really didn't' know what to think of their charge for mission. Large and old? Cumbersome. Heavy, judging by Jake's example. A team job just to move the thing. No wonder they needed so many bodies. Marcus was right, it was a team thing.

Sherry flashed Stormy and Gale a 'shall we?' smile and then stepped up to help out. She placed her hands on the behemoth of a scanner, making sure her grip was solid.

And thus was Stormy finally introduced to the unspoken rule: talk as little to Caelius as possible. She flinched at his harsh words and pressed her lips together as if to make sure not one more rogue word got out. Sherry's hand was a soothing gesture, and much like the Life hunter stuck close to her as they walked, so too did the trainee trail her like a duckling once they were introduced to Bethany.

Not a word was uttered, no remark on the thing's size, no comment about how it was nice to work with a team on this, that in a way she was okay with being out of her room if it was among familiar (or somewhat familiar in Marcus's case) faces. Story kept her head down once more, the only thing escaping her being a soft grunt as she grabbed a side of the scanner and hefted it with the rest. She was a waif of a human being, so it might have been comical to see her trying to shoulder a machine of that size.

It seemed like one of those extremely rare moments where the trainees were actually pulling more than the load of their so-called superiors - which actually happened more commonly than anything else on this Island - as Bethany tipped a little, looked like it was going to collapse entirely -

- And practically pushed everyone through the portal. The only saving grace was that it landed loudly on it's side in the sand with a loud whumph. There wasn't even time to think as it pretty much began sliding down the sand dune, sinking a little so that it was half-buried into the ground. Thank god at least, it had began to beep, a steady blue signal. Either this was bad news, and they had messed up the scanner, or it was doing it's job. It was hard to tell.

The area itself was clear, just simple blue skies and limitless desert dunes. Unlike the Sahara however, it wasn't overly sandly, more a pleasant sort of almost lukewarm warmth. There was nothing else in sight, just sand, blue skies, and the steady beeping and signal of the half-buried one tonne Fear Scanner.

Sometimes, Marcus regret accepting offers to help trainees. Sometimes. A lot of the time. He liked to help, but watching that scanner slide down made him wince. it would probably come out of his a Gale's paychecks, given their rank.

Grunting and dusting himself off, scarf adjusted to cover his head, a small thing of sunscreen pulled out and applied quickly, he looked over at everyone. "Well... lets get this thing started. Lead the way Jake."

Jake only gave Marcus a look when he chided him on his posture, but inwardly, he was glad, because while he didn't openly admit it, it was putting a strain on him and the thing freaking weighed a ton.

However, he wasn't sure if Gale was paying attention or just doing this to spite him, but when he tugged, the weight of the machine came crashing down, and...
s**t s**t s**t s**t-
-Toppled backwards into the portal, falling flat on his back as there was a muffled "whumph!" sound when the scanner hit the ground... sand.
... s**t.

Getting up, he stared at the scanner.
Was it... supposed to beep like that? He really hoped he didn't need to pick it up again, though when he heard Marcus spoke, he froze, staring at the hunter wide-eyed.
... wait. Wait wait wait HE WAS LEADING THIS MISSION?!
He quickly shot Gale a look that seemed to say "HELP."

Gale had been busy attempting not to drop the enormous scanner on his foot on the way through the portal, and was now regretting that he'd ever agreed to such a thing since, at the other end of the portal, was a desert.

They'd just gotten out of the desert and now they were back.

Gale swore under his breath, but at least he could (grudgingly) admit that it was not the Sahara. It was less fierce here, less bitter, and the sky, rather than be overwhelmed by a hot, burnt orange sun, was a pleasant sort of blue. It was rather like a beach - just except without the water.

He probably should have helped with the carrying more, since it was now half buried in sand, but, well, Gale was short and not all that strong and hey this was Jake's mission (sort of) he needed to carry the weight here (metaphorically and literally speaking).

Gale turned around, catching Jake's panicked look.

"Let's, er...look for steady ground," said Gale quickly, brushing sand off of his arm. "This is supposed to be on flat ground, otherwise the readings will be skewed."

He cleared his throat. "Anyone see anywhere like that?"

Sherry had been a little bit impressed with how quickly they got the monster of a machine through the portal, but she was far, far less impressed with well, everything that happened after the portal. Dropping Bethany into the sand was terrible, but the fact that they dropped the scanner into sand was the worst part. Another desert. Sherry was still finding sand in her boots and coat from the last time they'd been to one. (Sure, it wasn't all that long ago.) She could take some small comfort in the fact that she didn't recognize it, though. Wherever they were, it was slightly more bearable than the Sahara had ever been. Rather nice in comparison.

Sherry's attention was dragged away from the memories of other deserts and back to their rather large charge as the gentlemen began to more or less discuss the next stage of the mission.

Right. Set up the scanner and baby-sit it. "Um," she looked back to their surroundings and tried to ignore the noise coming from the scanner. Sand and sand dunes was all she saw.

"Um," she repeated, "Do you think we could set it up at the base of the dune?" She pointed down the hill. "I don't know how far we can carry it."

It didn't matter that this wasn't the Sahara; Stormy still shuddered violently upon entry. And with Bethany already half caught in the sand, this mission looked like it was already going to be a fun day at the beach.

Following Marcus's example, she looped her scarf around her head and adjusted her hat until her face was mostly caught in shadow. The base of the dune sounded as good as it got for now, so with a nod to Sherry the trainee slowly made her way down to start unearthing the large machine before its beeping got swallowed. With two Deaths, a Life, and a Moon on board, Stormy decided that as a Mist it was a Sun's job she would try to take on for the (hopefully uneventful) mission. That made sense, right?

< < I would agree normally, however . . . They are all stronger. For once mine advice is to remain flexible as the division demands and to not die for once. > >

She still glanced about several times nevertheless as she worked. "He said we should stay incognito too," Stormy added, feeling Jake's anxiety more than seeing it and getting inwardly antsy herself. "Maybe we should perch behind a larger dune once this thing's set up? Small groups or, uh, stay together . . .?" She hadn't really seen movies or read books involving covert desert tactics but was trying to help Jake along in her own way.

The scanner seemed rather content where it was, beeping and flashing away, which brought up the second question perhaps of how exactly they were going to carry this back. As there was no portal in sight, there only left for the team a whole bunch of questions and not many options. This continued on for a few more minutes as the Hunters debated their options before everything was interrupted by a very loud series of beeps.

Fear anomaly detected. Fear anomaly detected.

There was a pretty accessible interface on Bethany, half buried in the sand on one side. On it read an even simpler series of options.

Read scanner results?

[ Yes ] [ No ]

Touching the results could mess up the data, considering it had barely been five minutes in, though at the same time, the scanner wasn't exactly specific as to what the anomaly was. The scanner beeped five times very loudly again, easily giving away their location, before the text on its screen changed.

Normally, he was, but... after everything that happened...
Gale's comment earned a quick nod, but then he paused. It... probably wouldn't help matters much if he said the readings might already have been skewed from dropping it, and then Sherry's remark made his shoulders sag. He REALLY didn't want to be carrying this anymore (nevermind the fact of having to carry it back), and then when Stormy spoke, he suddenly felt quite overwhelmed and really just wanted to go back to his room and curl up under the covers. He was nowhere near ready for another mission, let alone actually leading one.

Before he could dwell on this further, a series of loud beeps made him jump, and he spun around, staring at the scanner.

He was really tempted to just leave it there and pretend nothing happened, but he had a feeling if he didn't press ONE of those buttons, the damn thing wouldn't stop beeping.
Kicking it was out of the option, right?

He looked around at everyone again, as if asking their approval, and swallowing, pressed a button.

[ Yes ]

"Ididn'tdoit," Stormy mumbled most helpfully, staring at the machine warily like it was going to explode. There were now two nervous trainees on that nope boat.

Sherry gulped as Jake pushed some kind of button. Sherry tried to give a small reassuring smile, but she was growing more nervous by the second. The beeping was quite unsettling.

BEEP BEEP BEEP-

- Click-

- Whirr -

- And then the machine stopped. To better explain things, it simply stopped moving. It didn't hum, or whistle, or even flash strangely threatening words on its interface screen and simply lay there stock still. It was almost anti-climatic.

This entirely unexpected and extremely boring situation continued like this for a good five minutes, as Bethany did not respond to any further prompting and just looked entirely like an extremely inadequate hulk of a machine half-buried in the sand.

Click.

But this new sound wasn't coming from the machine. No, when the Hunters turned around, they would see just one guy, a solitary guy in a hoodie, entirely human, holding an iPhone, taking a photo of them. He was carrying a backpack that said EAST HIGH COLLEGE emblazoned on the back of it. "Weird." The guy seemed entirely unphased by the lot of them. "Is this an engineering thing? Dude, those outfits are hilarious, you guys look like those characters from that movie."

In all honestly, the machine completely stopping was almost more worrying than it freaking out on them. They were going to have to pay for this thing, weren't they?

we're not in charge of it,> Armagnac had chimed in lazily.

Sherry had been about to reply with something along the lines of not wanting to wish the task of saying 'We broke it' to Caelius on anyone when a new sound interrupted things.

Sherry stared. A person? Here? (Where were they again?) What movie was he talking about? There were really several questions floating around in her head.

"What?" She glanced back to the others and crossed her arms. Their outfits were quite stylish, thank you.
